"Lost" was a phenomenally successful TV show, but TV writer Maureen Ryan says behind the scenes it was a toxic nightmare, with an atmosphere of bullying, racism and sexism. For her new book, "Burn it Down," Ryan talked to cast and crew members from all six seasons, including co-showrunner Damon Lindelof, about what went wrong.
I finished watching Frasier over lockdown - the miserable tale of a self-destructive incel - and decided to continue watching old American sitcoms. I thought Cheers was a hellish dystopia populated with malicious tormentors. So now on to MAS*H. It's hailed as a masterpiece of comedy. But, really, it's an exercise in military propaganda. The […]
"The Joe Schmo Show" is coming back, "Jury Duty" recently finished airing on Amazon's Freevee, and "Prank Panel," a Johnny Knoxville-fronted series, just launched. Here's a look at the return of high-concept prank shows — is this a welcome bit of fun, or a nasty surprise?
"Succession" came to an end last night. Here's a Magazine full of (spoiler-heavy) articles, including creator Jesse Armstrong on why the eventual successor was the right choice, and the fates of the rest of the characters. “I thought about all their stories,” Armstrong said. “You know, they don’t end. They will carry on. But it’s sort of where this show loses interest in them because they’ve lost what they wanted, which was to succeed."
I recently watched the drama #Mobile101 a.k.a #MadeInFinland about Nokia in the 80s and it's awesome. It's a little sad to be reminded how the tech optimism of decades ago has turned into the corporate patent nightmare it is today though. #tv#tvseries#finland
Today's Avengers epi was 'From Venus with Love'. Season 5, epi 1 and in colour! (color spelled the way the kids say it.) Jeremy Lloyd played a chimney sweep, green eyes and all. Llyod was very talented as an actor and writer. He was invited to a dinner party at Sharon Tate's house the night of the Manson raid. Married to Joanna Lumley and engaged to Charlotte Rampling. (I adjusted the colour in these. They were very pale out of my cell phone's camera.)
”Succession“ and ”Barry“ are coming to an end, but they aren't the only shows to have high hopes around their finales. The Wrap compiled a list of the 21 best TV series finales that stuck the landing. #Succession#Barry#TV
Marvelous Mrs Maisel is over! Season 5 was a return to form and I really enjoyed it. I'd be here for a spinoff following the adventures of the neurotic over-achieving daughter, who sets off on a road trip in 80s America during which she plays in a post-punk band, invents the internet and averts nuclear war a few times. Later she trains a large language model on recordings of her mother's comedy act. The resulting AI starts WW3.
Recommended: the 2023 National Geographic short series,
“#UFOs : Investigating the Unknown”.
It’s a compelling history of many well-documented sightings of weird things in the sky during the last 70 years or so, as seen by military, pilots, and hundreds of people on the ground. Journalist and author Leslie Kean lays out the facts.
Some folks in science, edu, government, military, aviation, worldwide, are investigating.
Used to watch Tomorrow's World when young (was it before or after Top of the Pops?). Inventions seemed to be presented as potentially for the benefit of all. Or that's my memory of it anyway.
If it was still on it'd probably just be a schill for tech product press releases and news of the latest ego extension project of various man-baby oligarchs. #change#TV#BBC#Memories#technology#maudlin
