My wife Sharon and I have been taking lessons since April of last year. We’re proud of this, but we’re also having a lot of fun and that’s what’s most important.
„Es gibt Menschen in der Partei [#DieLinke], die in Fragen des #Antisemitismus eine klare Haltung haben, auf die man sich in dieser Hinsicht verlassen kann“, sagte [#AndrejHermlin]. „Aber wir haben sehr starke Kräfte, die stehen in der Tradition der deutschen Linken in Ost und West, die den Terrorismus der Araber verwechseln mit Freiheitskampf und #Israel für ein imperialistisches Projekt halten.“
for #mittwochmetalmix let's try to push boundries of what #metal really is shall we? and i know a perfect band who does that: Diablo Swing Orchestra.
do you want #jazz with your metal? maybe you like #swing ing around? perhaps you also want a bit of #classicalmusic? mayhaps you also like to sprinkle in #electronic music. well they got you covered.
i saw them live and loved their energy. if what i said sounds interesting, give them a shot! i hope you like them! (also thank you @Kitty, for hosting the event)
So you've probably heard the Swing Kids version of this, which is great, but the combo of Goodman and Krupa doing the original is something incredible, and you realize why it was such an enormous hit in 1937. Krupa's speed on the drums and Goodman's command of the clarinet and orchestra is flat out genius. You'll note Goodman...
On May 21st 1927 the Lindy Hop dance was publicly introduced to the world. The Lindy hop is an African American dance which was born in Harlem, New York City.
On that date, the Lindbergh Spirit of St. Louis airplane completed the first transatlantic flight by air, the Newspaper reported “Lindy Hops the Atlantic” and the dance style adopted the headline. The dance has evolved since then with the jazz music of that time and was very popular during the swing era of the late 1930s and early 1940s. Lindy was a fusion of many dances that preceded it or were during its development but is mainly based on jazz, tap, breakaway, and Charleston.
It is frequently described as a jazz dance and is a member of the swing dance family. In its development, the Lindy hop combined elements of both partnered and solo dancing by using the movements and improvisation of African dances along with the formal eight-count structure of European partner dances most clearly illustrated in the Lindy's basic step, the swing-out. In this step's open position, dancers generally connected hand-to-hand; in its closed position, leads and follows are connected as though in an embrace on one side and holding hands on the other.
Lindy hop is sometimes referred to as a street dance, referring to its improvisational and social nature. On March 27, 1932, twelve-year-old Norma Miller did the Lindy hop outside the Savoy Ballroom with her friends for tips. In 1935, 15,000 people danced on Bradhurst Avenue for the second of a dance series held by the Parks Department. Between 147th and 148th street, Harlem "threw itself into the Lindy hop with abandon" as Sugar Hill residents watched from the bluffs along Edgecombe Avenue. There was renewed interest in the dance in the 1980s from American, Swedish, and British dancers and the Lindy hop is now represented by dancers and loosely affiliated grass-roots organizations globally.
Cab Calloway was the first African-American musician to sell a million records from a single and to have a nationally syndicated radio show (per @wikipedia )...
He was only 23 (and already an accomplished band leader) when he recorded his most famous song "Minnie the Moocher" which you can listen to here...
I'm off tonight to photograph more swing dancing. My goal tonight is to aim for a more pleasing compromise between ambient light and flash, while still freezing motion. (Wedding photographers have a tough job, I'm learning).
A single speed light, on camera, but bounced behind me was insufficient power last time. Tonight I'm setting up a couple speedlights off camera to bounce off the wall, and another across the room to back light. We'll see.

I love swing... but for me it is always eternally leading up to that midsummer midnight moment in 1956 when Paul Gonsalves' tenor sax takes flight....
