If you’re looking for some longer form content on cities, transit, technology, and other off-topic ideas check out @reecemartintransit He just moved off Substack and has embraced federated Wordpress
Thanks to @parismarx moving Disconnect to Ghost in the #SubstackMigration I am now a paying subscriber. I've been an unpaid subscriber for a year but couldn't justify sending skim to #Substack . Hopefully more of my creators leave so I pay them as well.
Thanks to @caseynewton and Platformer moving to Ghost in the #SubstackMigration I have now become a paying subscriber. Casey shared this link to get a 20% off annual subscription for new subscribers. #Substack#Ghost
This may seem trivial but it's an essential step to do when you are migrating from #Substack to another plaform (#Ghost in my case):
I edited Substack's welcome message to new subscribers to alert them that my account there is no longer active and that I migrated to another publishing platform (see screenshot).
I initially thought I'd delete my Substack account but I've decided to keep it to avoid #cybersquatting (same with #x)
Yesterday I:
✔️ set up my new newsletter on #Ghost (Pro)
✔️ migrated / cleaned old #Substack posts
✔️ ported over subscribers
Today I:
✔️ deleted all Substack mentions / signup prompts from my #Wordpress blog
✔️ deleted all my Substack posts (except the one announcing the move)
✔️ created a new subdomain pointing to my Ghost newsletter
I'm surprised at how big the reaction to the #AfD/Identitäre meetup is getting. I wonder if civil society wasn't really taking it seriously what has been obvious to us linksradikale from the start, that the AfD is nazis. Not "conservative", not "economic concerned citizens", not "EU sceptics". nazis.
I think there's something like a "reverse Stormfront" effect. The character in "The Boys", a celebrity who's a stealth nazi, has a quote that went viral online:
> "People love what I have to say! They believe in it! They just don't like the word 'Nazi.' That's all."
but in real life what I'm seeing is the exact opposite. antifa recherchers point out, this guy has friends in C18, in Legio Hungaria, has an SS tattoo, puts up 1488 stickers, quotes Mein Kampf--and nobody cares. People think either we're overly sensitive, or the nazis are "just larping edgelords", or it's "free speech best left platformed" (and, if you're the #Substack owners, give the nazis money too).
I guess it took a leak of a plan to ethnically cleanse Germany for most to realise that when we call them "nazis" we mean nazis. People don't mind the word "nazi" anymore. I think we should be more concrete in counterpropaganda.
I'm glad there's a reaction but keep in mind--the Pussy March was big too. #eleNão was big too.
The cool part about the ongoing #Substack stupidity is watching all the people moving to other platforms… Ghost, WordPress, ButtonDown… and so many others… Some hosted, some self-hosted.
This is a re-decentralization of email newsletters.
And that’s a good thing, in my opinion. Substack was becoming too big of a centralized platform for newsletters.
To the Internet has always been best when services are distributed and decentralized. (As the web and email both were when they began.)
I've just migrated all my blog posts from #Substack to #Ghost.
If you are tempted to do the same, I can assure you the process is super simple - especially when using Ghost (Pro).
All you have to do is export your Substack data and then go to Ghost Settings → Advanced → Lab -> Substack Migration... the process takes just a few minutes, it's all drag and drop.
Some people on #Substack anxiety posting about losing their followers if Substack folds or if they're forced to move smh.
Like, I want to scream about #IndieWeb principles at them, but then these are the SAME people who were part of the crusade against Substack recently, drumming up so much noise that big newsletters left for fear of their brand being tarnished by association.
I mean, what did you think will happen when you are a part of an anti-Substack campaign??
All right, for anyone wondering I am definitely planning to move off of #Substack quite soon. I want to take a moment to share some specifics about why it's hard for a lot of people to move off the platform, even though you "own your list".
I think most of the stories people are seeing about migrating away from Substack are from prominent writers. If you have a large subscriber base, it is cheaper to use a different platform:
To those of you who know well the #Substack universe ... how much of a problem is it that the Substack writer/publisher is charged a credit card 'charge dispute fee' by Substack/Stripe and never gets it back, even if s/he wins the dispute? Does this issue mostly turn up for fraudulent charges? How often do subscribers dispute a Substack subscription charge?
I haven't really mentioned it lately because I haven't sent out anything in about a year in a half, but I do actually have a personal newsletter on #Substack after moving there from (now defunct) TinyLetter. Well, for obvious reasons (cough Nazis) I'll be moving to a different newsletter service. Anyway I'll keep this (https://phocks.substack.com) here as an archive, but stay tuned for more content on a different platform. 🖤
ETA: Most of the #Substack tagged posts I can see here are about #SubstackMigration, while most posts with that tag on LinkedIn are from people (still) hosting on that platform. Not surprising
