Like I'm shure once big names got their #Minecraft #Streams repeatedly sniped by #Griefers, people like #Jeb did not only get a #BlankCheque to stop them but basically got ordered to do so NOW!

They can be fecking glad they only got #DenyList|ed by Minecraft Servers that use #Mojang's #BlockList and not have their entire #Microsoft Account locked down.

Tho that's consistent with #XboxLive handling #Bans: People can still play #offline but not sign in on the banned 360.

This is not a microblogging example, but Livejournal and Dreamwidth has custom privacy settings that you can set up, and I miss that on every other social media I am on. This just made me think of it

RE: https://blahaj.zone/notes/9gyjxzh1pj

testing,

@geraineon
currently, there are two privacy-focused projects on the fediverse: streams and the bonfire camp, with bonfire in beta atm #fediverse #streams #bonfire #privacy

testing,

@geraineon
the bonfire campground is a lovely, very friendly, not yet fully federated place > over there, many things are not yet ready for production, but the bonfire camp proceeds steadily

regarding streams: it is kind of an offshoot of hubzilla, using the same protocol (zot), which is not activitypub > zot allows for nomadic identity (i.e. multiple accs being managed simultaneously) > streams has implemented comment permissions, so that e.g. cryptospam is simply impossible by design

So… welcome to new users in the network!

If you are exploring the fediverse through the software, feel free to explore other platforms like to mention a few, for your usual “status updates” (and more) UI/UX.

If you want a platform more focused on photos and images, then there is . Or, you want bookshelves and tracking what you've read, or leaving reviews, there is .

But the beauty of it all, all of these are connected to the fediverse. You can follow any user regardless of which software they are using; AND regardless which server (domain name) they signed-up for.

For example, my accounts are:

Note #1: There are other instances. For example, https://calckey.world You can check out https://fedidb.org for more.

Note #2: You rarely need an account in other instances. I have other accounts because (1) I like to test; and (2) I use them for different purposes.

We even have fediverse hosted at https://chirp.social and https://a.gup.pe You can follow any group from your existing fediverse account and participate.

Again, welcome! Don't forget to post your / and update your profile with the tag !

As a normal folk trying to understand the inner workings of the fedi, Mastodon, and all these available services that interact with the platform: has the possibility of some kind of single signon option been discussed?

It feels weird that I have to create completely separate acounts for , , , , etc.

edtechdev,

@chartier Check out #NomadicIdentity which is a feature of #Hubzilla and #Streams codeberg.org/streams/streams but not currently compatible with Mastodon and others. #nostr github.com/nostr-protocol/nost… & #bluesky also support something similar, but they are not directly compatible with #activitypub

I think it's time we really bring some capitalism back into these villagers' lives, shall we?

That's right, it's that time again! #Sunday #Stream #SharedHardcore baby! Come stop by for some silly antics and close threats of ending the world, all of its inhabitants, and everything you know and loved just because your joyous jaunt through the woods resulted in a trip down an abyss so deep nobody knew your fate until it was too late...

But that won't happen, right guys? ...right?

seems to be spreading nowadays. It isn't new, I moved away from my previous instance because it didn't have active mod volunteers.

's idea of invites (, not AP) seems like a good way to both control spam and onboard users. Mods can rate-limit account creation by judiciously creating invites. Users can generate 1 invite each, but can expect to also get banned if their invitee is a spammer. User-invited users would have a real account to bootstrap their connections.

tetrislife,

@volkris interesting view. Web of trust-ness seems to be there in (it "gossips" content from friends and friend-of-friend, friends are cryptographically verified by design).

Per your view, / would work well on the user-in-control front (although whether their / UX implementations work for users is questionable).

I’m once again reminded of how deeply I despise the default behavior of this (and damn near every other) social media platform to crop photos to a pre-set aspect ratio in previews. (Some clients allow viewers to disable this, but that’s outside the control of the poster, who has no way to predict how your work will render)

The reasonable behavior to conserve screen real estate in previews is to downsize. Cropping alters the image, often in ways that destroy its meaning.

This is actually something I've been thinking about for a while. I have a longish writeup about this here
https://sociale.network/@oblomov/110199093300206184 (but see also the referenced meta-instance idea). <https://gotosocial.org/>, <https://codeberg.org/streams/streams> and even more so <https://codeberg.org/Vocata/vocata> are maturing as building blocks that would be useful in avoiding stream fragmentation while still allowing type-specific presentation in clients.

I envision actors having public keys as their IDs, possibly with some system for updates/revocations. When actor references are passed, they're sent together with the current (or last known) network location of the actor. Each server keeps a directory mapping IDs to locations. Actors can transparently move between instances, by sending a Move notification about their new location. Anyone who misses the notification can query friends/others who did get it.

tetrislife,

@pere

does this in its protocol. In its incarnation, it seems to present posts as a public stream and native Nomad posts as a fine-grain-permissioned stream.

@butter, @dessalines, I've grown quite fond of Friendica for that very thing, following things, not just people. Not only does it let me follow topics via tags, but things like and get added as "forums", plus I can follow any or feed. All of these are added the same as adding any other contact (follow). All of these different ways of following things get listed in the same area of my account, as "contacts", where they can be easily separated into to multiple groups (lists). Each followed hashtag, forum, contact group, or protocol type is always listed down the side of my page where I can simply click on it to filter my current feed.

I know that other / interfaces such as , , , , , and have some/all of these capabilities, each to their own extent. However, having played around extensively with all of them, I've come to find that is the one that works best for me. And at the end of the day, this is the only thing that matters. It may be a bit time consuming, but trying all the things is the best (only?) way to see how they'll work for you.

Despite only being validated in February, I think Group federation has been a smashing success for the Fediverse.

I use Fediverse groups every day.

And if you’re interacting with this post, so are you.

Fediverse groups even make Mastodon that much more extensible despite Mastodon itself not officially supporting groups yet.

It will depend on the platform. For example, (and to an extent and ), the owner of the group (and anyone else given moderation access) can block accounts. There is also chirp.social which can also block accounts.

Then there is , which is a rebranded itself a rebranded (the first software, c. 2008) have built-in groups feature; which IIRC, can also block users if needed.

Personally, services like Guppe really need to add moderation features, otherwise, what you just described will more likely happen.

All these talk about and complaints about this, that, this, and that, are mostly questionable(?) since many haven't seriously looked around the fediverse. It's like saying burgers are bad because you've tasted McDonald's yet there are better burgers from .

()? Check out and (the latter is in the ). / ? There is , , Hubzilla, Streams, to mention a few. Oh! Many Mastodon forks have it as well. You want a -like UI/UX? Use Akkoma or . What else?

The problem stems from the fediverse ending up unofficially represented by a very limited-feature software and most are not willing to do their due diligence (one would think they'll check out the forks at least). Before championing about the new kid on the block, before claiming that the fediverse is this and that, look around first.

What you've known as the fediverse, so far, is only based on what happens to be the software with the least feature set. Mainline Mastodon will get better, but it is what it is currently, as far as comparison with similar fediverse projects.

No one is saying you are not allowed to complain, just look around first before you make claims about the fediverse.

Also, no one is saying shouldn't exist. By all means develop it! Innovation and improvements come from seeing ideas come to fruition instead of staying as theories. Having different branches of development is better than getting stuck in one particular way of doing things, or line of thinking. It's all good and I think anyone will agree it is much welcomed.

Here's a : Since you have time to research a non-fediverse network, why don't you explore what the fediverse really has to offer, with the same effort and enthusiasm? Mastodon is not the fediverse, so you can not judge the fediverse based on it. That's like saying China is Asia, and you judge Asians because of mainland China.

Take the challenge, then publish the results of your journey. Good evening, and Shalom!

The one thing I do think the AT Protocol is better at than is data portability. Being built-in at the protocol layer so that you don’t have to do the migration shit (which doesn’t bring your posts) is better. It just is. I think ActivityPub has more potential overall for the social web beyond just Twitter clones, but that part of is better.

caos,

@Kaiteki @caos
