#GeneticEngineering has pro ably helped millions of humans survive, not least the #Covid19#Pandemic. The #mRNA that #Moderna developed has a new technology at its hard, #CRISPR, that made those revolution possible. DNA is cut up with incredible precision so that parts of the DNA can be removed or new parts inserted.
You know of more novels about #Genetic Engineering that have come true?--
Add them below on a hot #SciFiSaturday afternoon.
Meanwhile, #EU citizens should beware: Time is running up on a directive that will greatly relax supervision of #,GeneticallyModifiedFood, or #GMO, pressured by lobbyists:
If you have no idea, what I am talking about: It is a virtual reality simulation, which has been around for ages, has been a huge hype once, but is still up and running.
It's a place to be creative, to build, to craft, and it's also some kind of social network, but with no connection to real world data.
Ever since #SuckerBerg started to talk about the #Metaverse, I had had to think about this outstanding virtual-reality #SciFy saga, #Otherland.
I read it years ago, but Mina, let me tell you:
/i: be careful what you wish for! /i --
At least until you've read the 4 📚.
If you are fans of the original Battlestar Galactica (I am not) or are passionate about the 2004 rebooted Battlestar Galactica (I absolutely am!), then you will love the Blood & Chrome prequel movie!
It shows a cocky & young William Adama before he became famous throughout the fleet. What I loved about this movie was how realistic it was when it came to portraying the horrors & lies of war that soldiers see contrasted with the glories & glamour of what the public sees.
There are numerous excellent scenes, including these two (light spoilers ahead):
For #Pride Month, I'd like to mention #Babylon5. The show ran from 1993 to 1998, and made a point of not making a point of gay relationships. Susan Ivanova (serving military officer) had a lesbian affair with Talia Winters, and no other character even blinked.
Later on two straight men on a secret mission found themselves using "newlyweds" as a cover story, because two men on their honeymoon would fit right in.
The message was clear: in the future being gay is 100% unremarkable. In the 90s!
"WarGames": Vor 40 Jahren erscheint der erste Hacker-Film
Am 3. Juni 1983 startet "WarGames" in den amerikanischen Kinos. Der Film gibt zum ersten Mal Einblicke in die Hackerkultur – und ist immer noch aktuell.
40 years ago, the farsighted #SciFi movie #WarGames ("Kriegsspiele" in German") had its first showing in #US movie theaters.
Alas, today, with possibly #Skynet ante portas and Western governments very much disunited in regulating #AI, being completely oblivious of an exponential growth rate, despite #Pandemic training, it has regained actuality, despite the old technology.
A nice recommendation to watch (again) on #SciFiSaturday.
When night falls the long rectangular lights above the outdoor courtyard in Peachtree Center next to the Hub turn on and if you look up the skylines has a futuristic science fiction vibe. Photo taken in early evening in Downtown Atlanta.
A bit late reporting this, but last week, the indefatigable researcher Fred Shapiro found a clear 1906 example of "science fiction", in reference to H.G. Wells. Since (as with many terms) the early history is a bit muddled, this is an important discovery.
(The first known example is from 1898 (also referring to Wells), with an 1897 quote (perhaps from the same person) in the sense 'a work of science fiction'.)
Those TVs that play high speed “craft” videos in bars and airports are deploying blipverts a la MAXHEADROOM and if this keeps going ima die of a seizure
Watchparties sound like fun and could be something next-level for #SciFiSaturday.
I had a look at these app recomendations:
"You may see these Watch Parties scheduled using such apps as Streamlounge.io, Shudder Discord, Twitch, Yahoo, Vimeo, or Kosi.io. They may also be held on a Streaming Service like Netflix or Prime.."
