#ClimateDiary Now this is a story that has cheered me up (not much, recently). It sounds like a really wonderful, thought-through regenerative #restoration project - tree planting done the right way.
And: it is wonderful to see the efforts of people like Guy Shrubsole, George Monbiot and Eoghan Daltun, campaigning and writing about UK and Irish #rainforests for years, bear fruit. All this work does matter. Spurs me on a bit again! #HistoricalEcology#Devon
Belts replaced, flywheel freed of gunk, mechanics lubricated. We’re getting somewhere. Needs lots more cleaning and lubrication to work more reliably still but so far things are very promising! Even the lights still work, except the one behind the cassette compartment. #Sansui#SC1100#TapeDeck#Repair#Restoration#VintageAudio#VintageHifi
It's free BBQ season around here. My advice: you can usually restore Weber grills (all parts are replaceable), and usually it's mostly Simply Green and replacing the burners, grills, and the igniter. You'll end up with something much better (IMHO) than whatever the 'sale" grill was at the big box store. #free#DIY#restoration#reducereuserecycle
Restorers were going to toss out this table (preexisting damage from putting boiling hot canned tomatoes on it), so I decided to restore it since we'd like to keep it. Flipped the top over (other side is all water stains and rings). Sanded, filled holes, and treated with boiled linseed oil. #furniture#restoration
Today I was restoring a specimen from the Nottingham Natural History Museum's fluid preserved collection. Thisgrass snake was suffering from a severe fungal growth that had formed a plug floating on top of the fluid and smothered the specimen inside. Nasty stuff!
Here are shots showing the same snake and jar before and after I removed the fungus, cleaned the snake and jar, and changed the fluid.
This is my IBM 4979 terminal. It's part of the IBM Series/1 minicomputer ecosystem which launched in 1976 although my terminal was made 1979 or 1980. It features a 66 key IBM beamspring that was unfortunately suffering from the usual material degradation. The CRT was also non-functional with an apparent HV issue....
With all of the horrible things happening in the world, it’s nice to find the wins. Especially in the area of our environment. A group called Coral Guardian is restoring coral reefs, and it’s quite magnificent.
These photos represent 7 years of work on the Indonesia’s Hatamin Island. In this they have increased the fish population by 5x with 53k corals restored.
Finally! Working tires. Replacement was very easy on these, compared with wrestling with road tires. Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires, which make significantly less "rrrrr noise" and roll much better on pavement. Plus aren't from 1996. #BikeTooter#tires#cycling#restoration
Back on with the Pianola restoration today. The replacement tubing arrived last week but just cleaning the keys - tiresome but it's a sunny day and I'm sat outside, listening to some piano music as I go. Clean ones on the left: #piano#playerpiano#pianola#restoration
Nov 15, 2023 "#Permaculture instructor #AndrewMillison journeys to #Senegal to see a movement of forest gardens which are contributing to Africa's Great Green Wall. Andrew accompanies the organization Planet Wild to visit the excellent work of #Trees for the Future. Planet Wild is funding the planting of 40,000 trees in this project so we are here to assess the system and report on the situation on the ground." #restoration#desert#Sahara #climate#ClimateChange https://youtu.be/1LCTVO_Y5Rs
It's got just about warm enough to start hanging out in the barn so I'm back on with the pianola restoration! Just cleaning keys but I'll be tuning it soon!
