Residents in #NewDelhi complained of breathing problems on Monday (April 22) after a massive fire broke out at a Ghazipur #landfill the day before. Large plumes of smoke continued to rise from the burning landfill in the city’s eastern district, where excavators were seen removing piles of garbage to deescalate the fire on Sunday (April 21) night. In April this year, 2,000 homes were razed for the G20 summit, with no rehabilitation plan as the law requires. Five months later, Article 14 found families splintered, plunged further into poverty, uncertain what to do next, and children out of school. The Tughlakhabad demolitions were the largest carried out in Delhi in the run up to the G20 summit. Daughters had been sent to stay with relatives for safety, as parents lived amid the rubble of destroyed homes.

The descendants of marriages between Indians and Britishers, the community kept to itself, marrying amongst themselves, and developed a unique hybrid culture. Many stayed after Independence. Today, the community is dying off either through emigration, old age, or intermarriage with the wider population.
