We have been warned, time and time again. But ‘Net Zero' is still a political football, mitigation is unfunded. Fossil fuel companies are subsidised and given preferential treatment (electricity prices being set by the cost of gas in the UK for example).
“Families across the country are united in their desire for lower bills, cleaner water, and a green and pleasant home that we can leave for our children. Instead of embracing this mainstream majority, Rishi Sunak is willing to give up the fight for lower bills and energy security because he wants to stoke the fires of a culture war.”
Ed Miliband press release ahead of speech on #NetZero tomorrow.
I just wish Starmer and Reeves were fully on board.
All the public fuss is about ‘net zero’ - which is essential for resilience, and of course the latest target for climate change dniers. But we need to have something left to protect and mitigation while we achieve resilience is too boring, too expensive and too difficult to think about by many UK politicians.
Despite its push for renewable energy, the UK govt announced it was granting 100 oil & gas production licences for the North Sea. But the CCC says expansion of #FossilFuel production "is not in line with #NetZero" https://buff.ly/3a0wuEW
The aviation industry is likely to miss its #NetZero by 2050 target, Ruud Sondag - recently departed boss of Amsterdam’s Schiphol warns. EU🇪🇺 Govts would intervene to limit industry growth thru higher taxes or caps on flights unless enviro record improves https://buff.ly/3VbuFOc
"As political pressure mounts in the US to meet #NetZero carbon goals, the #NuclearPower industry makes its case for a nuclear 'renaissance.' This documentary by NECESSITY director Jan Haaken follows activists as they expose the true costs of the new small nuclear reactor designs."
My #solar adventures continue to evolve, in that as soon as I get close to #netzero (at least on power) something changes and I scramble to readjust. Another readjustment is now forthcoming....
Guess what - Gove was lying on his ‘need for coal’. Pesky government reports or maybe he just didn't have time to read them while looking down the sofa for ‘Brexit Benefits’.
Net-zero businesses are good for the economy, and great for workers:
"The analysis found that #jobs in the #NetZero economy are highly productive, generating £114,300 in economic activity, more than one and a half times the UK average of £72,550. They are also better paid by almost £10,000, the average net zero salary being £44,600 compared to the £35,400 #UK average."
"The #UK’s net zero economy grew by 9% in 2023, a report has revealed, in stark contrast to the 0.1% growth seen in the economy overall.
The report found that half of the top 50 #NetZero hotspots in England and Wales were in the top 50 most marginal Conservative seats to be contested at the general election, including High Peak, Cheadle, Derby North, and Lancaster and Wyre."
When they commit to the Green New Deal and Net Zero. There should be no exception. Carbon is carbon regardless of how it’s emitted. #NetZero#Net0#GreenNewDeal#Pariscummings
Carbon Tracker claims vast majority 140 companies targeted by Climate Action 100+ investor group are failing to provide adequate data on risks they face from climate change & the #NetZero transition https://buff.ly/49PDG3r#ClimateRisk
While #politicians argue about how & if we might undergo a #greentransition some people are just getting on with it.
A new report from the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit suggest the UK's #netzero economy grew by nearly 10% in 2023, while also providing well paid & productive employment for #workers.
While good news this will confirm to some on the right that the #privatesector can get on without state aid... but Green Keynsianism would accelerate this further!
What a disappointment Small Nuclear Reactors have turned out to be. They're not that small, or cheap or being produced and deployed at the rate and speed they were supposed to be.
Not a technology we can rely on to help us react to climate change in a meaningful way.
#Sunak knows that polling in farming constituencies in England is currently at rock bottom for the #Tories. Labour was reported as being ahead of them in these areas just this week.
So in desperation he attends a farming protest against Welsh Labour. One that peddles conspiracy theories against #NetZero and run by #GBeebies presenter.
Protest and biased broadcasting ok if it supports views of puppet masters of Tufton St it would appear.
