If you buy music as directly from an artist as possible, say at bandcamp, the compensation is enormous compared to streaming. A $10 album sale directly is the equivalent of over 300 Spotify album streams (3000 song streams). A $20 vinyl over 600, etc.
I too use streaming servives, but I’ve been trying to be more congnizant of the disparity both as an artist and fan. I try to buy things directly once I decide I like something. #MusiciansOfMastodon#Musodon
Today marks the one-year anniversary of releasing my first #album “Enjoy the Ride”! I think it’s my best expression of my #music, #art style, and who I am as an #artist! :MOULE_Happy:
You want to make someone's day? Find an independent musician that intrigues you, then go spend an hour listening to one or two of their albums all the way through. I promise they'll see it and it'll change their day for the better. Every musicians' love language is "listen deeply to my music"!
Warm and pleasantly distorted ambient tonalities, field recordings, neo classical composition, spoken word and lullaby like elements combine into "Getting Better" by @criticalcomposer. A meditation on the grieving process (and recovery from it, as the title states), this is an excellent musical example of the principle that form follows function.
The @negativeplayers "Consider the Birds" is warm, sunshiney indie pop that's a little bit folk, a little bit twee and a whole lot of pretty. Hints of Elliot Smith, Mercury Rev and the occasional flash of the chill side of Animal Collective are audible in the mix, but ultimately the song forges its own identity and welcomes you inside of its world.
Let's get weird, IN SPACE! @deepnbeeper's twisted take on "Thus Spake Zarathustra" takes the iconic orchestral piece (you remember it from the climax of 2001, surely?), slows it down, twists it up and runs it thru a selection of fx, then pairs the results with NASA footage. The combined effect is trippy, weird and beautiful. Recommended for TSZ enjoyers of all sorts (take heed #Phish fans).
Rock's not dead, it's just off living its best life in little cul de sacs like the one created by 21 Grams More. This is the pure stuff -- no qualifiers (e.g. classic, indie, stoner) needed. Puts me in mind of the roots rockers of the '80s (Graham Parker, Springsteen, Mellencamp even) -- no nonsense songs driven by guitar, bass and drums (with some tasty keys here and there) with clean production and passionate vocals. No frills, just #rock.
How about an #intro? I'm an independent #musician based in Denver, Colorado. I make weird, psychedelic instrumental electronic music. I like to talk about that music, your music, or really, any kind of music at all -- I'm a retired music/arts journalist. I also will post (more often repost) stuff about politics (leftist) from time to time. You might also see some posts about art, photography, writing or history. Or science fiction, fantasy and weird fiction!
You can find my music at my #Bandcamp and honestly, it would mean EVERYTHING to me if you'd take a minute to check it out. Sharing my music and getting the word about it out is like, 90% of the reason I do social media! I love feedback of any kind, and I am happy to give away free download codes if you need one. Have a listen!
This week's #DIYMusicChat will have a guest co-host, someone I work closely with often and trust their advice.. @InSearchOfMyRose
We'll be running it like an #AMA#AskMeAnything session, where between the two of us, we'll definitely have answers whether it is technical, related to #MusicTheory, or perhaps the more soft skill parts of just getting along in #Collab situations!
For those looking for new #musicians on #Mastodon / #Fediverse to follow this #BandcampFriday, I highly recommend this .csv made by @radiofreefedi you can import in Preferences > Import & Export > Import > Following List > Merge! :MOULE_Happy:
If you're interested in new material from the nexus of blues and rock, @randulo would like a word. His "The Woman in White" is a tight, smart take on blues rock, tackling one of the genre's classic tropes: drug addiction. Tight, expressive playing, tasteful solos that never go on too long and a lithe arrangement all work in the song's favor. Definitely worth a listen for blues and old-school rock fans.
Remember, #MusiciansOfMastodon#Musodon@diymusicchat when we get started, use the hashtag #DIYMusicChat and boost some of the posts to be sure everyone gets a chance to participate and can more easily follow the flow of the conversation.
Just two days left in the month; who wants to help me end the month with some strong streaming numbers? If I get ~80 streams I'll crest 700 for the month...
Here's my first-ever track I released under the name Ether Diver. It's a glacially paced ambient piece that is intensely focused on tiny movements and constant evolution. It's great for relaxation, reading, or doing yoga/meditation type activities.
Hello! @diymusicchat I'm tryin out a new thing, hoping to get more participation and engagement across the #Fediverse for weekly #DIYMusicChat, Sundays at noon, central time zone in the US.
Did you know boosts help federate the hashtag across servers, fam?

Behold, I cobbled together a #MusicVideo for a song I made! It's kinda heavy, kinda wrrbly. What does that mean? Check it out to discover! (I don't know though)
All the footage I used is in the public domain, and were sourced via the wonderful #InternetArchive (which is unrelatedly in peril right now due to some cynical corporate fuckery. Worth looking into if you care about stuff like, I dunno- the preservation of culture!) #MusiciansOfMastodon#rock#metal#prog#music
In just 5 and half minutes, "A Secret Message" takes us through loopy art pop, classic prog, showtunesque dramatics and some almost-metal guitars. Wild, woolly and full of surprises, @Dace has delivered something truly weird and thoroughly original. Something like if Mercury Rev picked up a few lost members of Dream Theater on a rock and roll road trip.
