It's cool to see a non-Malaysian interview #Malaysians about this. Though saying we speak 5-7 languages is a stretch lol. The average is more like 2-4, and it depends on what location, race & education. In Penang it's easier to find trilingual folks, for eg. There are some people who only speak ONE language, but they have to usually add another to improve their work opportunities in Malaysia.
A movement promoting #boycotts against #Israeli interests has denied initiating a boycott of #McDonalds restaurants in #Malaysia, claiming the boycott was first begun by ordinary #Malaysians.
#BDSMalaysia chairman Nazari Ismail said the group had merely supported the efforts of Malaysians who wished to boycott #McDonaldsMalaysia.
#Malaysians will pay a flat RM5 rate for a one-way trip on Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad's (#KTMB) #ShuttleTebrau between Johor Baru and Woodlands, Singapore.
The current price for a one-way #ticket from #JohorBaru to #Woodlands, #Singapore is RM5, while the ticket for the return trip is S$5 (RM17.30), and KTMB had proposed a change to eliminate this difference in #fares.
So far, 1,020 #Vietnamese citizens have been brought home on 9 flights from northern #ShanState of Myanmar, with entire cost of repatriation covered by the government.
My friend got #Covid and went to the government clinic to get #Paxlovid.
Guess how much she paid for the meds?
ZERO.
The doc also gave her 6 month supply of blood pressure meds. She had to pay for that, however.
RM1 (about US$0.25)
Universal healthcare is wonderful and I am glad #Malaysians have it.
I know cultural appropriation is a biggie in the #UnitedStates
But as a person who comes from a country where people happily culturally appropriates from each other, and who descended from who people who culturally appropriated & married into British, Chinese and Malay culture ... I never understood the rage around it in the US.
A quick reminder that the world may look at some issues very differently :)
"The #Israel War Room bid to sow discord between #Malaysians and #Singaporeans has instead united the two, who say both countries are an example of a successful ‘two-state solution’ and benefit from having strong bilateral ties."
The article's headline is one kind. It's more this: #Malaysians are spending a higher proportion of their income on eating out and takeouts compared to fellow Asian country South Korea.
The funny thing about Malaysians is that we are so used to thinking our country sucks that when folks say otherwise we think they have an ulterior motive and are trying to butter us up 😆
I've lived a couple of years abroad and have travelled extensively. I have come to realise every country has its problems. We in Malaysia, for one, take for granted our relative peace from conflict and natural disasters.
I was vacationing with a friend on Scotland island, off Sydney, #Australia in this amazing B&B. We were having breakfast at the verandah when the host approached us hesitantly.
"I hope I am not offending you if I ask this, but we were curious why you were speaking #English after we have left."
My friend and I were happy to answer though we were surprised that she didn't know that Malaysians often choose to speak English among ourselves.
That's when I realised the world is generally confused about #Malaysians. 😄
I don't blame her at all btw. I don't know many things about Australians and do not expect people to know about #Malaysia. Another funny incident in #Australia was when a friend and I slipped into Manglish. A Mauritian friend listened for a long while then said:
"What language are you speaking?"
We laughed because we thought Manglish was quite understandable... but when you think of it, things get confusing really quickly when you mix Chinese, English and Malay words together. #Malaysians are gifted linguists and we take that for granted. Our peolle can speak to Western nations, Indonesia, #China and #India. On top of that, we understand the cultural context of each as we are exposed to all the cultures via direct contact or media. #TootSEA

Lol the summary of Malaysia's history from the 1990s to 2017 is 🤪 🤣
But Kishore Mahbubani goes on to say, "as a result, few people are aware that, in terms of human development, #Malaysia is one of the most successful countries in the developing world... It's poverty rate has gone down spectacularly from 51.2% to 1.7%."
How #Brexit is affecting the cost of #Books. Books in #Malaysia is gonna get a hella more expensive, or maybe the bookstores - the tiny amount we have left - will be left getting books from the US. It's sad we don't print our own books but I suspect the business isn't as profitable here as #Malaysians are apparently not great English book readers. The Malay book market, however, is thriving.
Oh look my very first CW police! My answer is - no I shall not 🖕It is not my job to take care of your tender, easily offended self. We #Malaysians love to celebrate food and will not hide #MakanApaToday to cater to your tender dietary sensibilities.
If you are offended by the #Food I eat there is the mute and block button and do kindly unfollow.
People can be so ridiculous 🤣 Those 10 calories used to type that message could have been used for something better.
@jannem You should have no worries in KL. It's a very modern city. And don't be shy - if you have time and wanna meet some #Mastodon#Malaysians, I am sure we can arrange something and show you around somewhere.
Of course, you may be far too busy for that and the timing may not be right but hey, if there's enough notice we can work something out ;)
#Threads is a reminder that a majority of your friends don't know or care about data privacy. They are the audience who will follow their fave celeb/influencer wherever they go.
Which underscores the different crowds on the Fediverse vs Big Tech. Untangling my online presence from places like Meta is difficult because none of my friends want to leave the familiar. Their connections are all there.
I'm literally alone on the Fediverse and I sound like a crazy person when I try to explain why.
