My daughter was walking to the King Soopers grocery in Boulder, CO as it was being shot up by a gunman. Her dad called her to make sure she knew it was going on. That call turned her around and she went home and locked down. She moved to #Maine a few years ago. I texted her now about the Lewiston, ME shooting happening. She didn’t know. She’s 20 mins from #Lewiston - not close, but not far enough for me.
The justices ruled that the 14th Amendment did not allow Colorado to bar the former president from the state’s primary ballot. The justices offered different reasons, but the decision was unanimous.
Is it wrong to hope that if there's going to be a #massshooting anyway, that they take out the pro gun politicians? I mean that would be the best way to be remembered, right? eliminate the people who make this possible so that the laws change and you might get to be the last one to ever do it. #maine#massshooter
#BREAKING. UPDATE. At least 16 killed, 50 to 60 people are injured in the incidents, though it’s unclear how many are injured due to gunfire, the sources told CNN. #Maine#GunViolence
👉🏼"In voting news, #Maine has become the latest state to join the National Popular Vote compact, which could transform the way presidents are elected in the United States. Sixteen states and Washington, D.C., have now pledged to award their combined 209 electoral votes to the presidential candidate who wins the nationwide popular vote. The compact will only go into effect once supporters of the compact control at least 270 votes." https://www.democracynow.org/2024/4/17/headlines/maine_joins_national_popular_vote_compact
No spoilers on the off chance that you'd watch it, but we just finished watching all five seasons of Haven, which was a show that was on SyFy from 2010-2015. Anyone seen or liked it? For those who haven't, it starred Emily Rose (from Uncharted) and the other folks in the image here. It was based on Stephen King's 'The Colorado Kid'. There's all these weird supernatural things going on based around this fictional town called Haven in Maine (it's actually filmed in Canada 🤣). The show has strong X-Files, Twin Peaks, Twilight Zone, Supernatural, and strangely, even Gilmore Girls vibes at times. And once it gets past the first season, it really finds itself. I'd never even heard of it. And I really liked it. A kinda weird choice in actor for the main villain reveal in season five (you'd know him), but now, knowing what channel it aired on, that choice might kinda make sense. Anyway, it's on Tubi. If you're into weird sci-fi horror or drama stuff, you'd probably dig.
#Maine's governor does not refer a person from Maine as a #Mainer, but instead uses the term “Maine people” as the demonym. Does anyone know if there's any significance to this choice, or if it's just dialectal or idiolectal?
"I and millions of people in America struggle with mental illness—and we'd never consider violence toward anyone. We'd certainly never walk into a mall or a church or a school and gun down strangers."
The Supreme Court's decision in Bush v. Gore was among the most controversial in U.S. history, as it allowed the vote certification made by Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris to stand, giving Bush Florida's 25 electoral votes.
Our flight home from #Bangor was canceled, between winter storms on this coast and planes spontaneously falling apart on the other, so we’re doing this. Been a long time since this was my daily view of #Maine!
