News outlets reporting that over 700 students and community members mobilized today in #Kentucky, again shutting down Kyle Rittenhouse after hundreds of students in did the same last week in #Memphis, #Tennessee. Rittenhouse speaking at Kent State next.
Between the 1920s and 1940s, hundreds of debutantes signed up to be horse-riding couriers for the Frontier Nursing Service, a network of nurse-midwives in the rural mountains of Kentucky. Smithsonian Magazine tells the story of what they did, and why. "They got to wear pants, they got to act independently,” historian Melanie Beals Goan explains, adding that couriers were “really clinging to this idea of a nostalgic, isolated place where traditional American values continue to survive. Part of [the couriers’] adventure is the idea that they’re escaping from [parental] authority, but also that they’re going to go back in time to this really quaint place.”
"#Kentucky lawmakers gave final approval Thursday to a bill stripping the state's Democratic governor of any role in picking someone to occupy a U.S. Senate seat if a vacancy occurred in the home state of 82-year-old Senate Republican leader Mitch #McConnell.
"The legislation calls for a special election to fill any Senate vacancy from the Bluegrass State." FRANKFORT, Ky.
Another reason not to move to Kentucky - the government doesn't pay its bills.
If you are a nonprofit or small business with a state govt contract, good luck getting paid in any reasonable amount of time. They drag it out for months, and don't care if you need to pay your employees or purchase the program materials.
The right wing government here hates helping the poor.

The Vent Haven Museum in Fort Mitchell, Ky., houses the world's largest collection of ventriloquism dummies. In this Atlas Obscura podcast, Dylan Thuras takes you to meet the 500 residents of the museum, including a replica of Charlie McCarthy, who was responsible for Mae West being banned from NBC radio for 12 years. Here's a link to the podcast, and to an article that describes what you'll find in the museum.
They're a Horizon League conference and cross-town rival to my beloved and beleaguered #Detroit Titans but this week you gotta love Coach Kampe and these Golden Grizzlies.
If you want a glimpse of the "pro-life" white Christian dystopia Republicans collaborating with white Christian nationalists are preparing for all of us, look at Kentucky: as Paige Oamek and Rohan Montgomery report,
"The state is making it easier to kill homeless people on private property—and that’s just one part of one of the most draconian crime bills in recent history."
Over 280 #Kentucky healthcare providers have signed a petition calling for an end to that state's forced pregnancy laws. Forced pregnancy laws are a good way to drive doctors out of the state. By doing so, you wind up destroying more lives than you save, even if one holds that life begins at conception. https://msmagazine.com/2024/03/13/kentucky-abortion-doctors-healthcare-bans/
One of Susquehanna’s richest bets was purchasing a 15 percent stake in TikTok’s parent company, #ByteDance, in 2012;
according to the Wall Street Journal, Yass’ personal stake in the company is about seven percent.
🚨Petition for ALL #Kentucky residents, pls share widely!🚨
Based on an unscientific study, the Board of Trustees at the #UniversityofKentucky passed a resolution that threatens to eliminate shared governance at the university.
Pls stand w/ United Campus Workers #KY in calling on President Capilouto to oppose and present alternatives to this plan.

Murder is already the biggest cause of death for pregnant women. Kentucky has now decided to further incentivize men to kill women to avoid child support payments.
Since women can no longer have abortions, they must sue for child support to afford to have their unwanted kids. The woman's life is ruined, and she has no choice but to take the man down with her.
The Ky state government that has legislated forced pregnancy has not provided a single penny to cover uninsured costs, and of course even people who qualify for welfare can't get it. It's simply oversubscribed and underfunded. Waiting lists for programs are a mile long. Housing? Forget it - and the landlords don't have to take your payment anyway! (Thanks christians! /s)
Right wing christians love this outcome, because they love to punish poor women for having sex. Being poor means white republican jesus hates you, after all. They want the poor to suffer.
Christo-Fascists in Kentucky continue their relentless assault on the poor by outlawing towns and counties from preventing landlords from discriminating against people who use social security or section 8 or veterans funding for housing.
Prosperity gospel is the belief that rich people are rich because white republican jesus loves them, and poor people are poor because white republican jesus hates them and they deserve to be poor and deserve to be punished and are not worthy of basic human rights to...anything.
Kentucky is rife with this gross and disgusting attitude. It is embodied in the legislature, which has passed numerous laws imposing their false religious beliefs onto the public, oppressing the poor, women, lgbtq folks, and non-christians. Don't buy things made here, don't visit here, don't spend your vacation dollars here, don't support this red state government in any way.
“Republican-led #Kentucky senate voted overwhelmingly to grant the right to collect child support for unborn children, advancing a bill that garnered bipartisan support.
The measure would allow a parent to seek child support up to a year after giving birth to retroactively cover pregnancy expenses. The legislation – Senate Bill 110 – won Senate passage on a 36-2 vote with little discussion to advance to the House. Republicans have supermajorities in both chambers” https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/mar/06/kentucky-senate-child-support-unborn-children
When the US needed him to be a leader, he instead fixed his legendary focus on merely retaining the title. He has not even pretended to be a national leader. McConnell has failed our country at its moment of maximum peril.
When the time for a McConnell obituary comes, that will be his legacy.
The politics of making a good deal with Democrats on #border security and #Ukraine aid had to beshut down because Trump needs immigration as a campaign issue. "We don't want to do anything to undermine him," McConnell a power hungry #whiteChristianNationalist reportedly said.
There is evidently no principle for which McConnell will risk his personal, partisan power and position. Those are his sacred priorities, more important than preserving and protecting the #Constitution or promoting the national interest.
May karma visit onto him the pain, suffering and destruction he has caused to millions of Americans and Ukrainians. #MoscowMitch the worst of America. #Kentucky get rid of this monster.
