Really enjoying #MyDearest so far (I’m caught up now). Some people on the #Kdrama#Discord were a little put off by the Wes Anderson vibes of the premiere but it pays off later. It’s also unsparingly critical about Joseon’s patriarchy, monarchy, and aristocracy, which is something I always love to see in a sageuk. And it has Namkoong Min being very Namkoong Min. #kdramas

Oh, I didn't watch TV at all for 15 years but now, I am IN LOVE with #kdramas!! There is some utterly hilarious dialogue with not the slightest trace of a laughtrack. I love being able to make my own decisions about when to #LOL. And I do, frequently!
"Netflix has a vast presence in South Korea. Yet at times it felt to him as though the company, which outsources all of its production to local studios, wielded its influence from behind a curtain.
'One of their first priorities when entering the local market should be to establish some channel of communication with groups like us,' Song said. 'But there’s no answer at all.'"
@EllenInEdmonton@kdrama Being the hardcore brony that I am, I love Dramas that are unrealistically fluffy. I made an exception a few years ago for Prison Playbook. If you haven't yet seen it and if it is still accessible to you, I say with some confidence that it should pass your reality test. I watched it on the glowing recommendation of a close Korean friend who NEVER watches #KDramas but who loved that one, saying it reminded him of his time in prison in Korea. 😊
Watching a #CDrama and very impressed by something I don't ever recall seeing in any of the 300 or so #KDramas I have seen - a male lead who chooses not to drink alcohol. The way #KDramas continue to glorify Korea's toxic drinking culture is a persistent bane for me
@emmaaum
Haha, I don't dare expand my countries or my platforms!! #kdrama is already taking over my life. And, I lived in #Thailand for a couple of years as a kid so I have a starter knowledge of language/culture. Dangerous. Already spending hours/week studying #hangul as well as watching #kdramas. I need to wait until winter to expand on my indoor activities.
Just finished watching #DoomAtYourService last night and there was so much about it that was lovely to me. Hilarious dialogue, strong female lead, great soundtrack (listening this morning), and the fascinating scenery of #JejuIsland for several episodes.
One thing I love about #kdrama is the strong #FemaleGaze in many of the shows.
@emmaaum
Thanks! I like to see the viewpoints of other watchers. Some folks implied that it was weak in comparison with other #kdramas and I felt that the story lasted a bit longer than necessary. Nevertheless, I enjoyed watching all of it. Some really interesting ideas that were raised at times.
I've been looking high & low but it could be possible that the #KDrama community I created may be the only #Lemmy one around. Although it's in the Malaysia Lemmy instance, you are welcome to join if you're not a Malaysian.
To join the Lemmy group, open an account at Lemmy and then search for !kdramas.
Then, click Subscribe.
You're set!
Ok I went ahead and created a KDrama community in monyet.cc and immediately realised: Wait does that mean I'm a moderator now alamak 😆
And can non-Malaysians join the discussions @cendawanita ??
After some finagling I have a Viu account and even a subscription. I’m kind of excited to see Lee Joon-gi again - I haven’t actually seen him as a lead in anything since TALE OF ARANG.
I know he did a cameo in HOTEL DEL LUNA because of his friendship with IU. Is this the drama they knew each other from? #kdrama#kdramas
"When Netflix launched in South Korea in 2016, workers and labor activists hoped that the global streamer, accustomed to stricter labor standards negotiated by Hollywood’s unions, would be an uplifting force in an industry notorious for abysmal working conditions...But the excitement of those early days has faded as the realities of the company’s business model have set in."
One of the things the #kdrama START-UP does well and, I am sure, very intentionally, is demonstrating how capitalism disincentivizes developing technology solutions that actually help people with survival needs, because doing that doesn’t really generate revenue/profit.
Like, the team in the titular start-up business comes up with brilliant solutions for assistive technology but it’s not something they can turn into a viable business model. #kdramas 1/2
It’s not because they’re stupid or anything it’s because there isn’t a way to make a profit off a service that is directly offered to, and that directly supports, the population their solution serves. They basically have to use some shenanigans to get a large corporation to fund it from their charity budget. #kdrama#kdramas 2/2
I know I tend to give the impression that I only watch #CDramas and #KDramas & have given up on Western shows. But there are great shows still. "From" is one of them. One of the very few shows that can scare the bejesus out of me 😅
Think "Lost" but 10x scarier. Those folks in the plane crash had a vacation in Bali compared to these poor schmucks.
I love #KDramas with the trope of two people who are at first very annoyed with each other, but slowly come to appreciate, befriend and sometimes even love each other.
Some examples:
Mad for Each Other
Crash Course in Romance
Her Private Life
Crash Landing on You
Touch Your Heart
Marriage Contract
Does anyone have some good recommendations for me in this vein?
