@danjones000@microwords.goodevilgenius.org

Husband, Father, PHP Developer. Lover of Star Trek and anime.

Looking for other things to do, such as writing, acting, voice acting, but not really finding the time for it. Maybe when my kids are a little older, I'll get back on stage.

I'm also starting to learn Go. I think it's time to expand my programming skillset a bit more.

Feel free to follow. I may follow back if we seem to have similar interests.

My company has just announced that there will be a round of layoffs soon. They just laid off a bunch of C-levels. They're giving us the opportunity to "opt in" to "workforce reduction" with a promise of three months severance.

It's been pretty tumultuous here, lately, to be honest, and I'm considering it.

But, I've got a wife and four kids to take care of, and I've never willingly left a job when I didn't have another one already lined up. And we've got good benefits (healthcare and dental) right now, so I really don't want to give that up.

Maybe if I had something lined up with similar pay and benefits, I could do it.

So, I'm looking for any recommendations. I'm a #PHP developer (of roughly twenty years), who has been doing a lot of #golang for the past year, and I've gotten very proficient at that as well.

I'm looking for a US-based company, and a Principal/Staff/Senior Developer role.

Anybody have any good leads? My website is at https://danielrayjones.com, and I can be emailed at dan@danielrayjones.com.

My six-year-old has expressed an interest in learning how to program. I'm not really sure where to start. He definitely has the right kind of inquisitive mindset for it, though.

I taught a high school class for a little while, but that had a specific, very set curriculum.

And I taught myself when I was just a few years older than he is now. But that was with a Commodore 64 in BASIC. So I don't really want to start him there.

Anybody have any experience teaching young kids programming? I do know of the MIT Scratch language, but aside from that?

danjones000,

Robot Turtle looks great. Turtles seem like a common theme in programming for young kids.

A friend was telling me about guidelines for developing and deploying new services in their company, and one of the guidelines is “new services must not use .”

I’m not making this up, and this isn’t hyperbole. They actually have this listed on their company documentation.

danjones000,

This is why I decided to learn go last year. Not because I enjoy learning new programming languages (I do, it's just not the reason), but because I can make more with a year or two of go than nearly twenty years of PHP.

Just saw a cyber truck in person in my church's parking lot. Haven't figured out who owns it, but the date on the temporary license plate show it was bought a few days ago.

It looks as ridiculous in person as it does in the pictures. It looks like Elon handed Æ a piece of paper and told him to draw a truck, and that was the design.

Also noticed that when I got within a few inches of it, the display lit up saying "Sentry Activated. Recording."

So, apparently it just records everyone that gets near it, just in case someone tries to steal it, I guess.

danjones000, to retrogaming

I got a computer for my kids for Christmas. I've been setting it up for them, and they really like playing retro games. So, in addition to RetroArch and a bunch of old console games, I also installed @scummvm with a handful of adventure games that I've loved since I was a kid (Monkey Island, King's Quest, Maniac Mansion).

I'm looking for suggestions for other ScummVM compatible games that adventurous kids might like that may be less well known.

Any point and click adventure games you played as a kid that you could recommend?

Quick! Someone, make up a name for this drink I just invented and isn’t very good, but it’s what I had on hand:

    2 oz. Tito’s vodka
    1 oz. Aperix
    1 oz. Royale Orange
4 dashes of Peychaud’s aromatic bitters

Shake over ice and strain into an Old Fashioned glass.

I honestly think Peychaud’s is the sole problem with this drink. I should have gone with Angostura bitters. And rye whiskey instead of vodka (but I’m all out of rye).

    danjones000,

    Bitter, orange, Russian.

That sounds like a Donald Trump.

While everyone mentions Chrome and Google lately and how Firefox should be used, let's talk about Firefox on Android (or maybe on mobile at all?).

It lacks the amount of extensions and the usability seems to go slowly worse compared to its big brother on pc or previous mobile versions.

    danjones000,

While not a perfect solution, the ability to use a custom add-on collection to use any add-ons from Mozilla's directory works really well.

I believe it's available in Beta, but also on forks like Mull, Iceraven, or Fennec (which I use).

There are a few that don't work on mobile, and I can't sideload (😟), but it gives me nearly everything I would want.

There are really only two things I would like from Firefox Mobile that I can't get: Bypass Paywalls (not available from AMO), and Simple Tab Groups (just doesn't work on mobile).

    https://www.zdnet.com/article/why-dont-more-people-use-desktop-linux-i-have-a-theory-you-might-not-like/

Why don't more people use desktop Linux?

The author argues that people don't use Linux because there's not a single flagship distribution that people can just use.

I respectfully disagree. The reason people don't use Linux is because it's not on their computer.

Google has proven with Chromebooks that people don't care what OS they use. As long as they can find the web browser, and maybe a word processor, they're fine.

That's all that 95% of people need.

Most people don't know you can change your operating system. Many don't even know what an operating system is.

You want desktop Linux to happen? Mainstream manufacturers need to preinstall it. That's all.

I'm kinda on the fence about this feature right now. I can see where it would clean up the appearance of some posts. I'm not a dev on it or anything (or on anything else really), but I'm curious what your thoughts are.

    https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/26260

    danjones000,

I had some thoughts about this recently, as I started working on my own fedi server.

I had the idea of having tags and mentions that are intentionally not included in the text body, but still included in the post.

My idea was to have mentions use a ! in place of the @, like how Lemmy tags groups, and maybe a % or & in place of #.

So, I could mention you, without the mention being in the body by putting in !mike anywhere in the post. You'd get the notification, but your name wouldn't appear. This would be more useful for groups than for people.

And, I could add %fediverse in my post, and it would be tagged with fediverse, without the tag being in the body.

Those tags would get stripped out of the text during processing.

    @mike

    hello, world

    danjones000,

The most successful news agencies and newspeople on the Fediverse do more than just post news and leave it. They engage their audience.

If you want this to be a successful experiment, you can't use Mastodon like Twitter. It doesn't work well as a distribution network. It works best as a true social network.

    So, be social. :goose_honk:

I decided I wanted to learn #golang a little while back. I really want to expand my skill set. I've been a #PHP developer for a really long time, and I really like PHP, but I need to branch out some more.

I had an idea for a #fediverse project, and decided that this project would be the perfect way for me to learn go.

But, I'm finding it really hard to make any headway on the project because there's so much to learn to make it work well.

Meanwhile, I'm finding that I really want to make this project a success, and with the extremely slow pace of building it in go, I'm thinking that maybe I should give up on that right now and build it in PHP after all. I could probably have a working MVP in a few weeks if I did it in PHP. And then tackle a less ambitious project in go later.

I can't decide which way to go. Maybe I could even build it in PHP and later rebuild it in go.

    1. Walk into kid's room, quietly, muttering "murrrrder, murrrrrder"
    2. Wait for kid to notice you

    danjones000,

Mine is a microblog.pub instance. I've been using it for quite a while and really like it.

It's not perfect. It can be a bit buggy. It crashes randomly when multiple processes are writing to the database at once. It also doesn't have editing yet. And search is basically non-existent (I keep a Mastodon account for searching).

But I have full control. And I can (and have) edited the source code to customize it. And it is very lightweight. And no character limits. I definitely prefer it over Mastodon.

Apple should come out in solidarity with SAG/AFTRA. They have enough money to rise above the fray and do what is right: defend the rights of writers and actors, without whom the whole entertainment industry collapses.

    danjones000,

And Meta should stop selling everybody's data. And Twitter should stop giving bigots free reign.

Lots of companies should do a lot of things, but only will if it helps their bottom line.
