Six weeks left to submit your story to IMAGINE 2200!
Climate fiction needs your voice. Grist’s Imagine 2200 climate fiction contest celebrates diverse visions of a hopeful climate future, and it’s open for submissions right now until June 24, 2024!
This is the first time I work for a company that I actively want to personally advertise for, but I really like what #Grist does. It's like a #spreadsheet that's really a #database and lets you use #Python as a computational language. And it's all open source!
A couple years back, I wanted to make a list of the works by the #SeizBreur artistic movement (the "Breton art-déco")
I couldn't do this on #WikimediaCommons/#Wikidata of course, as most of the works are still under copyright, so I tried to make it with #Notion and while it works and looks nice, it needs some tedious repeated work, and has a lot of limitations in terms of what I can do with the data.
It clearly won't be the tool I need, as it is not at all image-oriented, but it will be useful to clean the data before I make a proper tool (probably using #Django / #WagtailCMS)
"More than 30 years ago, the tiny island nation of Vanuatu off the coast of Australia proposed a radical idea: Wealthy, high-emitting nations should compensate poorer, less energy-intensive nations suffering the disastrous consequences of climate change. For Vanuatu, those consequences continue to wreak havoc. The 320,000-person country is more vulnerable to natural disasters than any other nation, according to the United Nations, and it has been devastated by a series of cyclones in recent years. The archipelago is also prone to earthquakes, and sea level rise has pushed residents to move to higher ground. As a result, Vanuatu has been a leader in advocating for climate justice on behalf of Pacific Island nations."
"Almost every gas station eventually pollutes the earth beneath it, experts told Grist. The main culprit: the underground storage tanks that hold tens of thousands of gallons of fuel, one of the most common sources of groundwater pollution. Typically, two or three of these giant, submarine-shaped tanks are buried under a station to store the gasoline and diesel that gets piped to the pump. A large tank might be 55 feet long and hold as many as 30,000 gallons; a typical tank might hold 10,000 gallons. Leaks can occur at any point — in the storage tank itself, in the gas pumps, and in the pipes that connect them. Hazardous chemicals can then spread rapidly through the soil, seeping into groundwater, lakes, or rivers. Even a dribble can pollute a wide area. Ten gallons of gasoline can contaminate 12 million gallons of groundwater — a significant risk, given that groundwater is the source of drinking water for nearly half of all Americans."
The Intercept and Grist begin release of 50 #TigerSwan documents
by Brenda Norrell, Censored News, April 14, 2023
"The #Intercept and #Grist began releasing new TigerSwan spy documents in new coverage of the mercenaries hired by the #DakotaAccess Pipeline. They now have 50,000 TigerSwan documents, and another 9,000 are held up in the court battle for now. The documents reveal TigerSwan spying on #WaterProtectors at #StandingRock in #NorthDakota, Bold Iowa, and at other locations.
