According to a report by BloombergNEF, it is estimated that by 2030, there will be around 1.2 million tons of retired EV batteries worldwide.
Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have developed a new technology enabling EV battery reuse: a type of power electronics equipment that can manage a variety of EV batteries as an energy storage system for an electric utility.
At least wagons are getting a little bit of representation in the responses. Sad for the lack of minivan numbers, as those are more useful as people and cargo carriers than crossovers and SUVs, tbh.
"When it comes to body styles, and despite what you might read in the comments to automotive articles at Ars, SUVs are as popular as sedans with potential buyers; 43 percent said they want a sedan (or wagon), and 42 percent want an SUV."
Ars Technica: EV buyers want SUVs and sedans, not minivans or trucks, survey says
A Native-led public-private partnership to
advance EV use and reduce barriers to clean, affordable transportation in tribal communities. The tribes involved include Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Red Lake Nation, and 21 other tribal Nations in Minnesota, North
Dakota, and South Dakota. The project’s high-level
objectives are to bring clean, affordable transportation
options to underserved tribal communities while also testing
the effectiveness of EVs on rural, cold-climate tribal lands. #evs
Sad news: some Nevada auto dealers are actively working AGAINST the mass growth of EV adoption. We’ve compiled an official list so you can shop wisely.
According to Hyundai, “the tires of electric vehicles wear 20% faster than those of internal combustion engines, which is due to the acceleration of electric vehicles that generate strong instantaneous power.” https://www.hyundaimotorgroup.com/story/CONT0000000000050465
We must radically reduce the number of cars on the road but we're heading in the exact opposite direction.
@gerrymcgovern the front right tire on my used chevy Bolt was worn 3x as much as the others. The failure to control traction & torque causes excessive tire wear to people who just aren't adept at operating machines. But perhaps we could control cars using the infrastructure that we pay traffic Engineers to design & operate, roundabouts not stop lights. Certainly some cities could pull that lever while waiting for federal auto industry regulation. #ClimateAction#VisionZero#microplastics#EVs
“Why are Chinese cars so much cheaper, more varied, and just better than American ones?…An analysis in MIT Technology Review explained, ‘the government has long played an important role—propping up both the supply of EVs and the demand for them,’ and that there have been ‘generous government subsidies, tax breaks, procurement contracts, and other policy incentives.’” #EVs#ClimateDiary#protectionism#AutomobileIndustry https://www.laprogressive.com/techie-tips/afford-an-electric-car
@4am@Fake4000 too true. The same quality issue was levelled at Japan 50 years ago and now they are the go to for quality cars. My kids have a Polestar (not cheap) made in China and so far no faults and they love it. #evs#china
In today’s battle of the headlines, do you want an increased EV commitment or a decreased one? You can choose your own adventure and enjoy hours of pointless arguing by not reading the body of the articles!
#Biden requires automakers to ramp up sales of #EVs and hybrids — his biggest climate move yet. It’s likely to face legal challenges — WaPo #ClimateCrisis
During a rally, T**** warns #China that if they try to dump Chinese made #EVs in the U.S., there will be "a(n economic) #bloodbath" where he would impose a "100% import tax" on those vehicles (actually, only Congress has that power. After 4 years as prez, he never figured that out.)
If #Republicans are worried about China using #TikTok to interfere in our election (a losing issue for #Dems), he just gave China a reason to help #Biden and a reason for Dems to vote No on a losing issue. 🤔
I'm fine with the soft, whirring spaceship sounds that some EVs emit as a safety feature to alert people that they're moving. The new Dodge Charger EV comes with a deafening 126 dB roar, which is just plain obnoxious.
Dudes, HALF of the #ClimateChange / #GlobalWarming problem is #transportation. #EVs are not going to solve that when they need as much energy as a suburban house's heating/cooling load to charge the battery. If there's only one lever that moves when you pull on it, however little it moves, pull that one! Ride your bike.
"When mining companies like Resolution Copper kill places like Oak Flat, they kill us, by taking away both our way of life and spiritual connection to the land — and that is the worst way to die. That is not what we want. We want to stay connected; we want to live here freely as our ancestors did."

Very interesting to hear what #Toyota NA CEO Ted Ogawa has to say about #BEV investment in the US.
Essentially, Toyota is ignoring EPA guidelines about BEV mix and focusing entirely on customer demand, and they will not make BEVs in numbers higher than expected demand lest they waste their resources.
Toyota’s now-well-known reticence in jumping into the BEV bandwagon, preferring to sell #PHEVs instead, may prove to be the better bet. The EPA is likely to reduce their mandate for 50% BEV new car sales by 2030. If they do, then Toyota’s strategy would have been proven right.
This comes across as xenophobic and anti-Chinese baiting from the #Biden administration. The truth of the matter is that modern cars are privacy nightmares, no matter the manufacturer. While it may be true that “vehicles on American roads…could be immediately disabled by somebody in Beijing”, they could also be disabled by someone in Detroit, Austin, or Seoul.
The root of the problem is the fact that cars are allowed to be sold to the consumer with these egregious invasions of privacy. Want to fix the China problem? Fix consumer rights laws so that no one can remote-control your cars.
