PSA from Dr. Etienne, #neurologist and #professor at New York Medical College: "Dr. Etienne says that he recommends everyone eat fruit daily for brain health, but especially those with ongoing brain issues, such as #Parkinson’s disease, #dementia, mild cognitive impairment [#MCI] or a traumatic brain injury."
It's #Alzheimer's and #Brain Health Awareness Month. This study re: the benefits of healthy eating & exercise isn't claiming #dementia can be reversed, but the data goes under the category of, it can't hurt. For those concerned about #cognitive health (who isn't?), get sleep, if hearing is an issue, get hearing aids, try not to socially isolate (can be hard for us introverts), & get treated for depression. These won't #EndAlz, but may slow it down. Take care of your🧠
The brain can store a lot of data, but pollution will actually mess up your head in a bad way.
Air pollution exposure tied to heightened dementia risk, by Eric W. Dolan June 3, 2024
"...Recent research has suggested that environmental factors, such as air pollution, may contribute to the development of dementia. Air pollution, already known to cause cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, might also promote brain inflammation and accelerate cognitive decline. This study aimed to investigate these potential links in Denmark, a country with relatively low but still significant air pollution levels..."
Now imagine the pollution levels in the US, and how much more illness we have because of it.
My husband was well enough to leave the SNF for the first time in almost a year.
I took him adventuring Thursday.
I pushed his wheelchair. I couldn’t use a mobility aid other than his chair.
Shopping, masked, and lots of walking unmasked in the fresh air. Then I took him for a beer as a surprise. It’s a restaurant with a fuel station vibe. Big, open overhead garage door.
Fair warning.
I will shamelessly boost this tomorrow when I know more friends will be on. #FTD#Dementia
Yesterday after work I drove to East #finland with a rental car. (That was the first time I drove this year.) There was a car accident on the road, and a traffic jam. We got heavy rain.. I got lost once. Once the navigator said the road was blocked but it wasn't. But I did it and #today I saw my #parents. 😍 #AlzheimersSucks I haven't told you but my mother has #dementia now as well. #suomimastodon#roadtrip
"Over the years, her friends wondered what ever happened to Antonietta. Was she safe? Was she being well-cared for? Was she even still alive?" —Maria Iqbal for Toronto Star
New to our family, sandwich rolls: lavash, mayo, lettuce, prosciutto, havarti cheese. I am trying to find foods Drew can eat since he is not using his left hand very often. Regular sandwiches are a mess since he can’t tell the strength of his grip in his right hand. A firm hold means the sandwich filling falls out. Same for burgers now. Yay for Trader Joe’s lavash - only $2.49 for a large package. 2 pieces for 8 rolls. And it worked well. #Lavash#Food#Wraps#Sandwich
PS Anyone else having trouble finding food that a person with #Dementia or #Alzheimer can eat, feeding themselves? Since my son is losing more and more dexterity due to declining, he still wants his favorite foods in the way he has always had them yet he really can't deal with using his hands much at the same time he needs a special larger, round spoon to eat. About 1/2 of his meals the caregiver has to finish by feeding him.
We had Neuro OT for him for almost 6 years until he started having too many hospitalizations. For insurance coverage he has to be “stable”. Neuro OT is specifically for those who have cognitive challenges as well as physical, so both brain and muscles are exercised. We don’t need adaptive dinnerware now but easy to eat and drink foods. As dementia progresses chewing and swallowing become more difficult. But he still is hungry like a hardworking man!#Dementia#Alzheimer
@mycrowgirl Yes! Both! And also any tips on strategies to coax eating more food when his brain gets tired and stops eating because it’s too much work. We learned if he stops using his spoon, to load it for him. Then if he stops again we offer to feed him. It’s clear he’s hungry but frustrated at the work to eat. I think I’m asking what every caregiver thinks about when seeing declines with #Dementia and #Alzheimer.
"Typical of #dementia patients, he repeats himself and overuses superlatives and filler words," Gartner said. "Based on his current accelerating rate of decline, it seems very unlikely that #Trump could see out a second term without falling off the cliff and becoming totally incapacitated."
Some People Are Strangely Resistant to Alzheimer's. Here's What Makes Them Different
'A team of researchers... looked at brain tissue samples stored at the Netherlands Brain Bank.... Among those thousands of samples, the team found just 12 who had been cognitively healthy prior to their death yet had clear neurological signs of the disease's underlying pathology.'
