Clear & cold skies for this evening’s 53km ride yielded a nice orange-yellow sunset to the south-west & a lovely Belt of Venus, the shadow cast by Earth on its own atmosphere, to the north-east 🌞🌍
Windy as well, but overall it felt better than yesterday – seem to be recovering from my cold & cough finally 🙂👍
At the top of the hill on the way home tonight there was a sort of reverse sunset lighting up the eastern horizon. High eastern clouds are often lit by the sunset but I have never seen the whole horizon glowing with this kind of color.
New hand-built wheelset, bike serviced, irritating clicking gone – thank you Danny at Bike Experts in Voorburg (bike-x.nl) as ever 🙇♂️
Only wish the weather was less grisly for today’s 42km ride – cold, damp, & very grey 🤷♂️
Plus my usual grumbles about dusk: people cycling & running on the bike path without lights or reflective gear 😱, & over-caffeinated drivers ignoring bikes even with lights 😡
Was riding at 30kmh on the bike path alongside the N44 towards The Hague … and was passed by a ~13 year old kid slowly pedalling a low-rider e-bike going at >40kmh 💨
No licence plates & no helmet, as are mandatory 😡
And no handed, as is idiotic 🙄
I do hate seeing young kids riding e-bikes: it’s very common here in NL now & seems so unnecessary 😬
@ascentale@Daveography#bikenite#biketooter#cyclinglife A3. Not necessarily broken, but I sure spend an inordinate amount of time trying to keep my mirrors adjusted. Not matter what type on what bike, it seems like I’m forever tightening things up.
Took a day off after the ESA ESTEC Open Day to cycle to Zandvoort for some kibbeling with Admiral @alexandermilas, grand commander of the #SpaceRocks fleet.
We may only have a little boat now, but just watch us go 🚢🚀
A 91km ride, taking me over 5000km for 2023 – not the best year by a long stretch, but that’s a decent marker all the same.
@ascentale@glightly#bikenite#biketooter#cyclinglife A4. I’ve never ridden a recumbent or similar bike. Frankly they scare the hell out of me and I don’t really understand how folks don’t fall over! But last weeks ride had several people who rode them and having a chance to observe them in action was a good experience for me. My ask in responce is “Why did you choose this form?”
It's the equinox today, and the weather might feel like it's changing as fast as the amount of daylight is. We are certainly experiencing some smoky fall weather in the SF Bay Area. We have another question about riding in colder weather. @Cutterpillow asks:
Q2. Now that fall/winter season is upon us, with colder temperatures and wetter conditions, what do you use for eyewear and footwear? How well do they work and/or how well do you like them?
@ascentale@Cutterpillow#bikenite#biketooter#cyclinglife A2. re: colder/wetter riding weather. I am reminded of the old adage, “There is no such thing as a bad day on a bike, just inappropriate clothing”. I have lobster mittens that I wear almost as soon as the temps’ drop into the 50’s f. REI rain jacket (from hiking). I’ve seen people comment about capes, especially from Cleverhood https://cleverhood.com/collections/rover-rain-capes-rainwear. Anybody do capes?
What is the official policy on bike lanes? Are they supposed to be primarily for moving cycle traffic, or are they delivery lanes that cyclists are welcome to use when deliveries aren't happening? This happens so frequently I'm honestly confused by this point.
