"Vermont is poised to pass a groundbreaking measure forcing major polluting companies to help pay for damages caused by the climate crisis, in a move being closely watched by other states including New York and California."
Actually, my second post on this thread of climate news is also a question today. Sorry if that bothers you. Not really, but I'm trying to be polite.
So, if you've been following me than you know that I've been trying to make Senator Whitehouse more famous because he's a major, major climate hawk, but I need help on this one.
I'm too old to tell if they did a good job on this. I'm psyched though that they tried and put out this two minute video.
@ClimateMigration has been on a reduced schedule for the last few days and sporadic posting will continue through next week due to vacation. Normal curation will resume after January 8th.
I would love, to have Tags in Lemmy. I love them to find posts on the same topic ore news in Mastodon, and I would use them the same way here. For me it would also be a good solution of the “Problem” with dublicated ore unspecific Communities. So if i’m only interested in a subtopic, I can just follow the tag, and get only the content I’m interested in. (For example, if I only want posts about climate news, I can follow a community for climate news, but also the tag #climatenews (ore something) to get posts from for example Worldbews too.
Canadians, Australians, and Americans are some of the most #CarbonPrivileged in the world. All our news reporting is about how magical hurricanes and fires are. Nothing about #ClimateChange or burning #FossilFuels for the most part. #ClimateNews revolves around incrementals like electric vehicles, banning straws, solar panels.
Never do we actually talk about taking away the privilege of intense energy use. We don't talk about building denser, smaller homes. We don't talk about NOT taking that vacation. We don't talk about NOT buying things. At most we sub in one form of consumption for another.
We, the largest energy users in the world can't just talk about alternative energy. We need real energy reduction and yes, that means the "economy" will hurt, that means fewer vacations, that means smaller homes. (Don't @ me with some facts about small apartments, I'm talking about averages here).
We will never get anywhere until we accept using less. For starters, no homes in the greenbelt where we need cars to drive between McMansions.
#ClimateDiary like others i usually plead for #ClimateNews to be given more urgency and prominence. The #Guardian does this now, with #heatwave live updates. And even my determinedly optimistic father now sends me climate worries. Paradoxically, it’s making me feel deeply miserable: i guess somehow everyone else’s denial was actually enabling me, too, to cling on to an illusion of normality. Now it’s all the #NewAbnormal, to quote Michael Mann, and surprsingly hard
The climate crisis is smashing economies, ruining the environment, crushing countries, destroying oxygen creating forests, but there is not a central report, a clearing house of the war on life.
Oil's war on life.
That website needs built Climate War Report or some such name.
#ClimateDiary i am posting this article here now - about #Drought in #Germany, where #Water loss is amongst the world’s largest. But i am finding it all difficult just now. Week on week, day after day hard-hitting #ClimateNews - it’s getting to me and i am not sure how good it is to keep on posting all this. Will try and focus on #ClimateHope for a bit if I can
