Today in Writing History July 28, 1866: Beatrix Potter was born. She wrote “The Tales of Peter Rabbit.” She was also a scientist, by training, and a conservationist. She studied mycology and got her start in illustrating by doing field drawings of fungi. In 1903, Peter Rabbit was the first fictional character to be made into a patented stuffed toy, making him the oldest licensed character.

The rule is are better than based on them. I think they accomplish different things though: books have more detail, movies can show what you may have missed

I think most books are better, but I have a theory that and DO adapt well. Simply, less material to adapt means they can add more depth to what is there. A great example is Wizard of Oz. I've read the book - it's good, not great. The movie is, especially for its time, amazing

Quotes that show #kidlit is not just for children:

“It was morning. Some of the sky was yellow, some the softest blue. One small cloud scuttled along. Strange how everything below can be such death and chaos and pain while above the sky is peace, sweet blue gentleness. I heard a shaman say once, the Ancestors want our souls to be like the blue sky.”

Need help from the book-loving hive mind, please!!!

I'm trying to remember the title of an illustrated children's book, c. 1980s (UK).

A sad and lonely vampire, dressed in the usual black cloak, fangs, etc. He had no friends as he kept scaring people away.

I can't remember what the twist was, but something happened and in the end he was loved by everyone and had lots of friends and was happy.

WHAT WAS THIS BOOK????? 🤦‍♂️

What happened to kids’ books about the future? Gray Stanback asks where are the children's books illustrating hopeful visions of the future. They were all the rage from the late 1970s.

#BoingBoing notes that #Usborne is reissuing 1979's "Usborne Book of the Future", a glimpse into a more optimistic age that some of us grew up in.

Kids need hope like adults need #solarpunk. We can get to a brighter future!

Today in Labor History June 5, 1919: Richard Scarry was born. Scarry wrote and illustrated humorous children’s books with elaborate scenes of anthropomorphized animals. Some of his recurring characters were Lowly Worm, Huckle Cat, Mistress Mouse the tow truck driver, Wild Bill Hiccup, Gold Bug and Dingo the reckless driver. His fictional world, Busy Town, is characterized by a strong sense of community and mutual aid. Over the years, he revised his stories in an attempt to eliminate racial and gender stereotypes.

My 7 year old, who reads at a 5th grade level (at least) asked today if time had a beginning, which totally thrilled my husband, who got his PhD in HE physics back in the day.

Does anyone know any good physics/time books for kids? Not about measuring time, but about the concept of time.

He can read a 250 page novel in about 2 evenings, and he can probably handle something aimed at a middle grade level of scientific understanding, though his math skills are still pretty basic.

The BBC polled 177 book experts from 56 countries to find the top 100 books for kids. The list reflects the scope of children's literature through the eras. It includes the Panchatantra, a collection of Indian stories dating back thousands of years and "A Kind of Spark," which was published in 2020 and tells the tale of a neurodivergent girl who campaigns for a memorial to "witches." Here are all the details:

I realise #ChildrensBooks use a lot of fantasy, but I'm not sure that stealing a chicken, and becoming a egg farmer is a believable criminal plan to becoming super rich - or are egg farmers rolling in money and it's just a well kept secret? #parenting

The brilliant author Elle McNicoll has set up The Adrien Prize to champion the writing of authors who include positive depictions of and in their children's books following the closure of The Blue Peter Children’s Book Award earlier this year. The shortlist has just been announced, as follows:
The Secret of Haven Point by Lisette Auton, Puffin Books
Wilder Than Midnight by Cerrie Burnell, Puffin Books
A Flash of Fireflies by Aisha Bushby, Farshore Books
This is a brand-new prize to get behind and it’s great to see that The Book Trust have recently given away copies of the longlist to schools in a competition.
This article has a little more information about the prize > https://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/blog/elle-mcnicoll-launches-new-childrens-book-prize-the-adrien-prize-6408

A committee of young judges will now decide on a winner and I look forward to the announcement in early 2023!

The Adrien Prize has a winner! Quote from Elle McNicoll ‘CONGRATULATIONS TO Aisha Bushby, WINNER OF THE 2023 ADRIEN PRIZE FOR "A FLASH OF FIREFLIES"

Our young judges voted for this winner because of the gorgeous characterisation, the dynamic use of metaphor, the inventive storytelling and the authentic portrayal of the young narrator’
The prize champions the writing of authors who include positive depictions of and in their children's books
