I think I found a way to hold pizza boxes on Cargot Robbie that I like. I have some quick clamps and I can slide them between the cargo bags and the frame, and that's a enough to keep the boxes in place, even on a bumpy ride. Maybe next I'll find a way to 3D print some brackets to hold them in place without risking the paint?
For #WorldBicycleDay, I’ll post this picture in answer to one of the most frequent questions I get about biking: “But how do you get groceries?” My #CargoBike is large but can hold five full grocery bags up front with no problem, and two more on the back rack if needed. You can do it! It’s easy if you try. #BikeTooter
In 2023, word was it would be the last production season of the Surly Big Dummy (non-electric) cargo bike. It's still for sale today. https://surlybikes.com/bikes/big_dummy But they have made some changes that not everyone is happy with, including using a single chain ring up front and removing the mount points for a centerstand like the one that Xtracycle made for it originally.
I started a blog to promote the idea of electric cargo bikes a decade or so ago. At that time, many electric bikes and cargo bikes were still made from kits. The combination was even rarer.
The idea caught on so much that it seems non-electric cargo bikes on their way towards to extinction. It's true that cargo and electric pair very well on a bike.
It's also true the non-electric Surly Big Dummy is joy to ride whether it's around town for a long bike tour. #bike#cargobike
@markstos all of my cargo/tandem bikes were bought as acoustic and then modified because the built-in motor options are too weak for actual hills. A decade into it, there are some e-cargo bikes showing up around the neighborhood, but they don't get used as much as mine (except the one guy with multiple batteries and a smaller kid.) Off-the-shelf options have improved slightly but still not really capable as car replacements.
We’ve put roughly 4,800 kms on two e-bikes in just over a year. ~2,800 on the Yuba (no riding Dec-March) since end of April last year and 2,000 kms on our Load4 75 Reise & Muller since the end of August, 2023. We’ve had lots of bus trips and I’m averaging only 9 kms of walking a day. Living without a car can be very fucking frustrating and limiting in a city like #ottawa but I wouldn’t trade it for anything #cargobike#biketooter
@grivettcarnac I did trade my cargo bike(s) for inner city living, and while I do miss them a bit, no regrets. The main reason is the trams here in Melbourne; without them I'm not sure I'd feel the same. I'll probably end up getting a new cargo bike, just to have it, soon enough. 😆
Still, 4800km is quite insane. Even in the suburbs I was doing maybe 1500km a year. Nice work
@sortius I’d easily trade one cargo bike and maybe even a pinky finger for a good tram system! I follow someone on instagram who lives in Melbourne and is constantly showing the public transit system there and decent bike networks! We went from downtown living to not quite the suburbs (Ottawa is a bit fucked as a city) and these bikes have given us just amazing quality of life
Hey #ottbike or folks around #ottawa that are interested in the idea of a #cargobike but have never seen one up close or ridden one. I’m not an organizer but found this on instagram and will probably try and make it out for the show and tell with our two e-cargo bikes. More people need to see them everyday in all the places, in all the situations, for all the reasons people need to move around and live. Please share and come out! #biketooter
lol. Shelter wouldn't let us take home fosters (in a hard shell carrier) in the #CargoBike because "it's too dangerous". I even deflated the tires a bit for this, for a smoother ride.
[for background, every cat I've ever dealt with has been terrified in a car. They hate the speed, and the loud engine/vibrations. It's one of the reasons I started transporting my former cats by bike.]
Wieder ein Bleiakku 🔋 weniger!
Er hat unser Mobiltelefon und unseren Laptop schon mit #Balkonsolar ☀️ aufgeladen, als das Wort noch gar nicht erfunden war.
@slack glad you’re OK. Wish there was a sense that recording this stuff would change any behaviors or awareness. Are you doing anything with yours besides social?
