Did you know that the oldest known #adhesive was also chewing gum?

#Birch tar is in its simplest form, burned birch #bark. It forms a sticky black pitch that can be used as glue.

Evidence for #human (& #Neanderthal) use has been dated to 200k or the Old #Stone Age.

Birch tar is also a disinfectant & it has been found as a chewing gum in various locations in Europe.

One birch gum piece from 5700 yrs ago, contained a complete human #genome of a woman.

I love birch trees, but they don't generally grow down here in Virginia. New Hampshire, on the other hand, is covered with them! I took advantage a few years ago on a leaf-peeping trip to set up this still life.

Not quite so brightly coloured as the mountain-side during golden hour, but I really liked the colours of this birch-forest nonetheless.

Serious thunderstorms and wind last night. It looks like the River Birch snapped in the wind, or lost root hold. Not looking forward to close inspection. #PlantMoreTrees

On inspection, #Birch and #Katsura were unharmed; a rotting silver #Maple split about 3 meters up, and oddly landed #Square on top of a fence post not a rail. Pi or Fibonaccci or Bernouli?

200 centimeter maple trunk split open and pooised over a split rail post.

Birch Tree, Denver Botanic Garden, Denver, Colorado

A birch trunk frames a view in the Denver Botanic Garden. This is an amazing garden very near downtown Denver. I wasn’t sure if it was too early in the Spring to have enough blooms to photograph but all the spring bulbs and trees were in flower. We had a wonderfully temperate, sunny day in which to explore the entire site. One section was under refurbishment, but this will give us something new to see when we return.

Hiking on a I could hear the mountain "breathe" - distinct low booms every minute or so, as if hungry. The landscape there is eerie black with forests in stark contrast. I stayed late in the evening for a light show of lava and hot boulders.

Is anyone else in Germany and surroundings struggling with allergies currently?

I have a heavy allergy phase right now and am trying to figure out what it might be? According to the internet, the only pollen out there in high numbers today is birch tree pollen, but there are no birch trees anywhere close. I'm in the middle of Berlin.
