For a while I have stored my backups in S3. It's around 3 TB of data.

I'm looking forwards to a secondary service for a second back up.

Don't need fancy or GUI stuff, just the ability to upload from Linux CLI and/or API, with preferably a sync tool (think "aws s3 sync"), and an online tool to watch what's in it.

Any suggestions for places that aren't mega dodgy or do any kind of tracking? EU preferred too.

What a heartbreaking story! Reminds me of when I lost years of my life’s photos due to a bad HDD with no backups. 😞
People, check your #backups. Twice. Check that everything is actually in there!

Exploring restic for backing up my workstation (to local external volumes and probably "the cloud" too) at the suggestion of a friend.

Maybe just in time, because...

Is there any tool to download public posts and retoots and reply toots of an inactive Mastodon account? I forgot to backup my posts before migrating, and I don't know a method that doesn't involve disabling inactivity on the account (and not sure what that will do).

Today in #selfhosting, I'm investigating why I got alerted that my #backups aren't running.

The first task is determine if the backups really aren't running or whether there's a problem with monitoring/alerting.

I used #Ansible to set up #Restic to backup to #BackBlaze.

I think I'll start by checking in BackBlaze to see how fresh the backups are. 🧵

Looking for a backup solution for both Windows and Linux targets (about 20/80% respectively). We're building a new backup server (Currently using BackupPC), and figured this was a good time to start researching other options.

I'd prefer a solution that's on-prem (e.g.no cloud solutions).

Any ideas?

How to use Shizuku with Swift Backup to batch restore your Android apps after a factory reset (no root required)

Back in the early days of Android, Titanium Backup was considered the go-to backup solution for those with full root access. Its impact on the power user community over the years is undeniable. However, Titanium Backup’s days are numbered because the original ...continues

I'm looking into getting a new #tape drive for another level of #backups. (My main storage is 16 TB and I already have an additional array as a first layer of backup. Cloud backups are off the table due to the sheer volume of data I have.) I'm debating whether I should get LTO-9 or LTO-6.

The reason why LTO-6 is on the table is because I have some LTO-4 WORM tapes from a few years back with much older data that I don't have anywhere else that I'd like to be able to read from. LTO-6 is the newest version that would be able to read those.

What do folks think?

The only immutable backup is offline and unpowered. There's a part of that process that cannot be automated.

If an automated network process makes your backup offline,
a network attack can bring it online.

If an automated network process can remove power to your backup,
a network attack can bring it online.

The only immutable backup is offline and unpowered. And no matter what the sales person tells you, that requires human intervention.

If you enjoy using #restic for #backups, but you find it challenging to manage multiple configurations, give autorestic a try!

I just pushed the first package to @fedora, too!

i need an adhd-proof but affordable incremental backup solution for my computers, where do i even start?

i already was tenatively planning on making a nas, but i need to have some sort of backup software i can set it up wont immediately break if i forget to check if its working. preferably, i would want to atleast take routine backups of my desktop and thinkpad. maybe once in a while take a full, compressed, system image of each.

I have long used backups that are monthly full backups, weekly full, and daily incremental (or sometimes also full if smallish). Yesterday I learned this is traditionally called the “Grandfather-Father-Son” scheme. This was a surprise, at least to me.

Seems a bit patriarchal and has nothing to do with backups. Is there a better name currently in use?

Instances affected are: musician.social outdoors.lgbt and firefish.lgbt

Running out of iCloud storage. I don't want to pay for 2TB, so deleting stuff from my photo library. The originals I imported in, so it's not as though I'm losing anything. But am still exporting them before deletion, just in case.

Just hanging out during power outage. What are you all doing for battery backup?

Currently I have 3 led bulbs w/ USB connectors that we use while camping that get distributed. Then we clench our ass and hope power comes back before the fridge warms too much.

I've been thinking a sol gen battery, maybe an ecoflow, or the like, and have an electrician install a manual switch from grid to the battery. Really just need to run the fridge and maybe a heat pump.

Since all the search engines have gone to shit, I'll resort to the old-fashioned way of finding information: Asking people.

So, what's the easiest, most foolproof way to do encrypted offsite on ?

I have a few TB at Hetzner, and a few personal laptops that need automated backups.

The whole thing needs to be fairly foolproof to run (because at least one kid is going abroad for a few months with their laptop), and foolproof to set up up (because it's me setting it up)

If you're running a #Synology #NAS and you back files up to #Backblaze #B2 check your polling settings because the majority of my bill (admittedly not a large bill) was in "Class C Transactions" which were caused by my NAS polling B2 every 60 seconds

There's even a section on it on the Backblaze docs, but I didn't read #RTFM as initially setting up Cloud Sync seemed straightforward

Aktuell sichere ich meine Daten einfach per Restic.

Nachteil:

where do people keep online backups of their drives (preferably somewhere low-cost)? how exactly would they sync without needing to reupload huge swaths of data for minor changes? and I guess on that note, what's your general backup scheme? roght now I just... do borg backup to a 2nd drive whenever I feel like it, and don't really sync it anywhere, which isn't really, you know, great.

I briefly looked at AWS S3 Glacier storage, thinking maybe having a second cloud host for my backups would be good.

I can't actually figure out how much this will cost me because they charge per operation (you know, like PUT, GET, etc.) in addition to the storage costs (which I easily figured out).

The kicker? I work at AWS. 🤷
