I tried using #PulseSMS for a little bit today, because I remember liking it back in 2018 when I actually paid for the service.

I downloaded it and disabled its networking access immediately through #CalyxOS' firewall.

Even though it wasn't able to download ads, it still had blank ad banners, pop-up "buy premium!" screens and premium feature teasers like a thumbs-up icon next to the most recently received text with some small text saying something like "Try reactions!" (which sends you to the TRY PREMIUM! page.

This is without any internet access. It's all just hard-coded into the app.
I don't have a problem with these guys charging for their app, or charging a REASONABLE subscription fee for the service (being able to send SMS through any web browser), but man, apps in 2024 are just SO horrid. :'(

The state of SMS in the FOSS world is still pretty bad.
I either have to live with flip-flopping between #AOSP Messages and #QUIK for the features I need, or whack a great deal of my #SMS history in order to reduce the db size so that #Fossify messages can run reasonably well without burning up my battery.

Ok, sorry for complaining. I'm thankful for #FOSS. :D

downloads just got much bigger! I just did a repo sync on android-14.0.0_r29 and was surprised that it downloaded almost 900 GB of data! Why?

Answer: before r29, most of the binary blobs in the manifest were marked with clone-depth="1" so you only got the most recent version. Now you get all versions. For example .repo/projects/device/google/bluejay-kernel.git/ has gone from 0.5 GB to 14 GB

Solution: always set the clone depth to 1 when you repo init:

$ repo init --depth=1 -u .....

Ok, this is weird:

The stock Messaging app lacks tons of features (like SEARCH), but it can send images via MMS very well.

The QUIK app (recent fork of QKSMS) does a great job of searching and even has a limited built-in backup function, but it totally fails at sending images over 300kb, and sometimes at all.

The Fossify messages app (fork of Simple Mobile Tools) does both, BUT it burns through battery crazy fast on my over-sized SMS DB.

Ugh.

Any FOSS SMS app recommendations?

For any @GrapheneOS users trying to get the new app working: you need to go into the app’s settings, and tap on ‘0 verified links’ (which doesn’t have these checkboxes, it just looks greyed-out and unclickable), and then check all the boxes, and then it works!

Any nerds know if this is a Santander, or issue? Lots of apps self-register as link handlers so I’m tempted to assume Santander, but also the grey ‘0 verified links’ thing being tappable is very confusing UI!

I've tried out GrapheneOS on my Pixel 8 and I like it. The installation was flawlessly althought I was a little bit scared of destroying something 😅

My initial impression: Very minimalistic from the beginning, it feels like the first time after an Arch installation 😄, the Sandboxed Google Play feature works very good, only the AOSP apps should be renewed in the future or replaced with more modern alternatives

I hope that Graphene will going on with this great work

I've got a curious problem with #SMS #TextMessaging on #FOSS #Android:

QKSMS/QUIK does absolutely everything I need (except for RCS), but can't send #MMS attachments larger than 300KB. It just fails instantly. It compresses them automatically if I turn that setting on, but 300KB JPEGs are pretty potatoey.
The #AOSP Messaging app handles images over 1 MiB with no issues whatsoever. But it doesn't have a search feature, which I need.

#Fossify SMS just drains my battery.

I know this is a shot in the dark, but...I need an #Android #recommandation

I'm looking for a cheap US-compatible phone that's unlocked, uses T-Mobile/Ting VOLTE, can be rooted, and can run a custom ROM like #Lineage_OS or #AOSP.

It doesn't need to have a ton of features or high specs. I just want a cheap phone I can de-Goggle and remove bloat on.

I wonder which launcher will be the first to have a new release?

Both and are saying they're about to release a new version of the 14 launcher.

The launcher is a bit threadbare (by design) so I'm looking forward to trying something new.

If you use an open source launcher which you like, please let me know which one.

Android 14 changed the color of the low battery icon from red to white.

Recently, for some reason, I've stopped getting "Battery low" notifications at very low percents...but I still get them at 30% & 25% (I have it set to start at 30%).

...so now I rarely notice when my phone is about to die. This has interrupted me on so many occasions.

My hatred of Android has been growing exponentially lately.

This is a device society expects you to carry 24/7 & acts as your primary gateway to both digital & IRL services. i.e. mandatory.

is a cartel colonizing the attention spans of billions of people. It must be broken up & the project should be put under the control of a democratic organization

cannot come fast enough. I'l tolerate any level of jank to never have to touch Android again.

Large corporations like the hate on the even though it has brought them big benefits. would be nowhere near what it is without the GPL. I always saw 's kernel as their effort to get out of the GPL, since it would replace the Linux kernel. There was even media hype to that effect. Now I'm happy to see that Google is no longer supporting on Fuchsia. I see this as a win for

https://9to5google.com/2024/01/15/google-is-no-longer-bringing-the-full-chrome-browser-to-fuchsia/

eighthave,

@fvbever 's policy is Apache-2.0, with only case-by-case exceptions: https://source.android.com/docs/setup/about/licenses

So clearly does not want GPLv2 there either. Plus a big part of 's development model is building proprietary software that is mostly community-maintained free software. That's harder to do with any license.

TheFederatedPipe, to privacy in [Android] Hard debloat vs Change OS

@gone Hello from Kbin! To my understanding, changing OS to something like is probably better and more secure than just removing all the bloat from the system, since you can't actually delete to a 100% all the proprietary components from and your manufacture without breaking your phone, as far as I know, graphene has features that no other ROM nor have which are better for privacy, and treats all the apps as equal for better security.

TheHatedOne (youtube) has a series of videos about grapheneOS that may have the answer you want.

  1. Here's How They Built The Most Secure Phone On The Planet (youtube)
  2. Exclusive Interview With A GrapheneOS Developer (youtube)
  3. My Phone Is Anonymous Now (youtube)

But in my opinion, deleting all the with adb is better than nothing, so, you are good to go, more if you can't afford to buy a pixel, has a good sandbox for apps AFAIK.

Here is a list of apps you can delete from XDA Forums
Universal Android Debloater, a GUI to debloat non-root android

After all, I recommend you to use a firewall like NetGuard to block everything by default and just allowing a few apps of your choice, or TrackerControl to again, block everything, but to block trackers from apps you allowed to connect to the internet.

Jednak mocny procesor, 6GB RAM i ekran 144hz wciąż robią robotę.

Ze strony crDroid:
"What base is crDroid using?

crDroid uses LineageOS as base. We try to keep in sync with LineageOS source while also adding lots of customizations for you to choose from."

Ze strony LineageOS:
"LineageOS Android Distribution

A free and open-source operating system for various devices, based on the Android mobile platform."
