🌌 On this day in 1978 the very first episode of the very first version of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy went out on Radio 4. We can't tell you how proud that makes us.

Here's a lovely programme about Douglas and his creation, presented by his friend John Lloyd, that went out on the 40th anniversary.

📚 Here's another Douglas Adams treat: half an hour with the man himself talking about the writing of Hitchhikers…

@BBCRadio4 I'm watching the Tom Baker Dr Whos and DA was script editor on many of those. There are a few imprints of HHGTTG in these. For example , in "The Creature from the Pit" we have the Doctor saying "don't be afraid..." I was waiting for the next line - "be very afraid"
Also (probably not exact quotes)

Dr: What do you call that hole in the ground?
Queen: We call it "The Pit"
Dr: And wat do you call the creature that lives in it?
Queen We call it... "The Creature"

Very Adams!

Which story is this from? I'm slowly working my way through the Tom Baker years (in no particular order)

@zenheathen You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is

@BBCRadio4 The very best version, IMO.

@BBCRadio4 I remember exactly where I was. It was a seminal show. My then boyfriend and I listened together in our new rented flat.

@BBCRadio4 I was there for the first broadcasts. So sad we lost Douglas: who knows what he would be working on now? Whatever it was, he'd probably be missing deadlines.

I had all twelve episodes on tape in the early 1990s and used to listen to them on my two hours of commuting to work and back: full repeat every three working days. I couldn't get enough, and could quote most of it verbatim.

I also have the original Radio Times editions with the listings in them :)

@macronencer So many of us remember the weekly ritual with the cassettes! ❤️ ⏯️
