livingcoder,

@maxim I like this poll. I wait for a discount, but I'll only wait for 50% if it's a game that I'm not interested in much.

PlumpCat,

@maxim all comes down to financials for me. Currently I can't afford any games but I will eventually purchase games from my wishlist as I am able.

@maxim pretty much unless it's a multi-player game my friends are already playing, I wait. This is mainly due to limited time having kids meaning im years behind in games... So new ones I tend to take forever to get too.

tulx,

@maxim voted 2, though I mußte say that for about 2 years now I’ve stuck to what’s available on Game Pass because there’s so much good content there that I’ve not been able to justify buying additional games beyond that. BG3 being the only exception so far.

@maxim я як бідняк купую за повну ціну тільки якщо хочу підтримати розробників або певен що гра крута: Stalker, Silksong, CD Projekt Red.

Все інше додаю в бажане і чекаю на знижки. Перевіряю ціни через SteamDB

@maxim I chose #2, but additionally: I might wait for an extremely deep (70 or 80%) discount for single player games because I already have like 50+ incredible single player games in the queue and I hardly play single player games as it is.

If it’s co-op, I’ll buy when I’m actually ready to play with others or when a 20%+ discount comes around.

To summarize: My goals are to limit my library size, rather than to save money… but an extremely steep discount will entice me to buy anyway.

serbaayuu,

  1. Wishlist the game to remind myself it exists, buy the physical release later.
ClickyMcTicker,

@maxim
The game has to be complete before I buy it.
Bethesda game? Give it five years.
Most AAA games? A year or so (also rules out failing games like Halo Infinite).
Indie games? Just depends, as even some early access games feel complete enough to me.
Outside of this, if my core group of friends has something that looks incredibly fun, I might go for it. I pick up 1-2 games a year.

@maxim usually I wait for a discount, but if it's a game from a series that seldom gets love and I want to give more love (f-zero likes like Aero GPX, lost franchises like Darkstalkers, etc.) I'll wait til they're full price for full support

@maxim Depends on the game. Some games I buy Day 1, full price or slightly discounted over HumbleBundle (latest examples: Sea of Stars, Armored Core VI or Street Fighter 6). Other games (AAA and Indie) sit on my Wishlist (currently around 300) and wait for a nice discount to be bought (…and never get played 🫠). SteamDB historic lows or 2 years low decide if I buy a game. Than a bunch of Indiegames find the way in my library over HumbleBundle (Bundles or Choice).

RayuDW,

@maxim It depends. If I really want to play a game immediately (or directly after release), I buy it with the listed price. Early Bird discount or not.

If I wishlist games, I usually wait for a discount but if I wanna play that game and it doesn't have a discount at the time, I just buy it anyways.

It also makes me feel a bit better because the developers mostly deserve the money they ask for. More even. But that's a completely different topic.

bigaston,

@maxim It depends. I buy maybe 5-10 games a year I absolutly want, often Day 1 at full princes (or with the launch Discount). But for the other games I wait for a discount because I've a very big backlog

@maxim All depends on the game.
Hype has made me buy something before but never made me enjoy it after spending $60 and finding out it's half done or a buggy mess or just unfun to play.
That said I'll pre-purchase some (MW:5 probably the last?) just for what it means to me. Usually even a broadly accepted "Good Game" has to go on discount because I'm so apt to just set it down and forget it if doesn't completely hook me.

DeadlyEssence01,
@DeadlyEssence01@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@maxim My usual behavior is add to wishlist and wait for a discount. But this depends on the price of the game and how much I want it. I've refused to buy some $20 games because I didn't feel they'd be worth it to me, and since they never went on sale for less than $15 I never bought them.
But I've also bought games at release prices (Won't spend $70 on a base edition though).
I usually aim to spend between $10-15 on a game.

@raptor85@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@maxim Some things are a day 1 if I'm really looking forward to them (Dredge, DQXI, AC6, BG3, SRW30, System Shock), generally anything early access I wait for release, as I have enough half completed abandoned games I paid full price for in my collection, and if it's something I'm interested in but not terribly excited/wasn't really anticipating I'll wishlist and wait for a sale.

eibriel,
@eibriel@sigmoid.social avatar

@maxim I add all games I like to wishlist, and wait for the Steam notification telling me about the discounts. That often don't take long.

If the game is expensive above average and the discount is small I still don't buy it.

If I really like a game and see that is cheap and it never goes into discount (happens with some indie titles), I buy it anyway.

Lorhin,
@Lorhin@mstdn.games avatar

@maxim It depends for me. If the game is like $20 or lower, I don't really wait for discounts. Or if it's a game I'm really, really looking forward to, I'll buy it full price. If it's a game I'm interested in, but don't need to play it right away, I'll wishlist it for later.

Nifflas,
@Nifflas@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@maxim Some games I'm so excited for, I buy right away. Some I wait for discount. Depends on price, amount of excitement, and how long I think I have to wait for a discount, and if I feel this dev has plenty of funds, or especially needs my support. I don't think I have a general rule.

picard,
@picard@mas.to avatar

@Nifflas @maxim same for me. also - depends on whether it's aaa from a major publisher (more likely to wait for large discount unless it's really important to me) or indie (more likely to buy with small discount, or no discount, depending on how into the genre and theme i am). i guess that's covered in your 'plenty of funds' idea.
