Parents are increasingly taking their children out of school & home schooling them, with the most reported reason being the mental health of their children.

To some extent, the pandemic normalised the idea of children learning from home, so we might wonder whether the threshold for concern prompting a turn to home schooling has lowered.

But, it also suggests the impact on children of the myriad crisis that have engulfed school in recent years.

A concern I have as the uncle of multiple Children that are home schooled, from both wings of my family; is how it will affect their long-term prospects.

The home-schooled kids I know, are definitely less resilient, and none are far above their peers in terms of ability in anything I've witnessed, or been told about.

It could very well be a crisis we don't realise we have until they are in their 20's; a generation of kids unable to find work, or form the same relationships...

I agree with Kenan Malik; behind the increasingly instrumental view of university education (that it should be judged by what it does for your subsequent career & earning potential), lies a class-based assessment of who should benefit from education at all.

The working class do not deserve the humanistic value of education but rather must be trained in work skills... while the privileged should be able to buy the benefits of enlightenment!

Ever hear of Russell Kirk? A conservative firebrand and contemporary of William F Buckley. His ranting that a prosperous middle class would lead to chaos captured the minds of asshats like the Kochs after the 60s. That’s what inspired them to organize, to take control of gov and wither away prosperity of all except themselves.

Education is one thing they’d put an end to. That’s when tuitions were made to climb.

Not sure I have heard of Kirk, but I'm aware of the position on the middle-class(es)

I may no longer be able to make much of a difference in my life, but today I was able to learn again what I had forgotten.

It is important to fight for those who are not yet able to, unless they are too young or not even born yet.

We all have some problems in life, and so it is very easy to focus only on them and forget that we are part of a community.

President Barack Obama had a slogan:

“Yes We Can”!

🌻 Thanks for reminding me of this too! 🌻

One of the mantras of modern education has been the benefits of (need for) 'lifetime learning'; the utility of adults retiring to education when their skills need updating or they wish to acquire knowledge to change (or develop) their career(s).

That funding cuts since 2010 have nearly halved the numbers of adults (re)entering various levels of education is both depressing & another instance of austerity & Tory cuts constraining people's life choices (chances).

#Genocide needs to be taught in all schools. It's sad to see so many adults who obviously never learned what genocide truly is. They really believe that it's only genocide if almost every person targeted in a genocide is dead. There's more to genocide than only body counts.

Good news on open access to my works on bilingualism, the research area related to my teaching, child-raising, and using Japanese for over 40 years. I was interviewed by The Japan Times on for a forthcoming paywalled article. It was a long interview, and usually a newspaper article uses only short passages from one individual. However, the Association for Bilingualism Special Interest Group ( SIG) would like to publish the full interview in its newsletter Bilingual Japan. Everyone should be able to read that as I back it up in research repositories. The tentative title is "English Education and Bilingual Education in Japan."

My publications on bilingualism have been backed up mostly at Academia Edu, which is not so easy to access anymore [any comment?], so I've added links to the original sources of articles, which are open access, at https://japanned.hcommons.org/bilingualism

Courtney Gore, the co-host of a right-wing online talk show, won a seat on a Texas school board on the basis that she would undo leftist indoctrination and get rid of educational materials with inappropriate messages about sexuality and race. Then she took office and actually read the curriculum, finding that the subject matter simply taught children “how to be a good friend, a good human.” The Texas Tribune talked to her about why she ran for office, what she thinks is behind the push to take over school boards, and the backlash she's faced since speaking out against the ultra-right element of the Republican party.
