Here's a challenge. Talk to at least one different person IRL a week about socialism or communism. It can be about anything. Working class struggles, free healthcare/education, revolution, anything. We can no longer relegate our activity solely to the internet. As useful as the internet is, real change can only be made by going outside and interacting with people in real life. Go! Change the world!

@Radical_EgoCom@mastodon.social avatar

When was the last time you talked to someone in person about socialism or communism?

False Nationalism False Internationalism: Class Contradictions in the Armed Struggle is an investigation of the struggle for solidarity between the left in an oppressor nation and rebellions against that nation from the oppressed.

The research explores political questions of pro-capitalist classes and opportunism, of euro-centrism and settler colonial privilege amongst groups and entities striving to steer revolutionary resistance.

Just as liberal democratic capitalism evolved over centuries to achieve success, socialism is also in its early stages of development. There's still experimentation, and there will inevitably be some mistakes along the way. That's no reason to give up on socialism.

I've seen people argue against socialism as "lacking individual freedom" but that is what a career under capitalism feels to me.
Whenever I worked for a big company it was always "go go go, work harder" and I was just too exhausted/busy to actually get out and go live.

I hope we can change the views of our peers and show that socialist policies can help improve life overall

So, every other subthread is someone talking this and that with very poor commonality of definitions. So here's one to try on for size:

Capitalism: a system of economics in which the state determines through threat of violence a special group of people who have exclusive say in how capital goods are used.

That covers for example both the USA, and USSR pretty well. any other capitalist countries we'd like to discuss?

Cirdan,
@Cirdan@awscommunity.social avatar

@dlakelan @GhostOnTheHalfShell
Those are good questions. I think those questions are better left to a vote of the workers. But nobody knows what form each Commons Capitalism Entity (CCE) will take. The best we can do, today, is provide CCEs with the tools necessary to successfully answer those questions and implement the worker's requests.

The breadth and depth of the US economy is just staggering. I'm trying to promote an economic system that can replace traditional capitalism. Even then, it would take 75-100 years.

I agree. But I'm also compelled to to point out Bell Laboratories as a notable exception. If for no other reason than that type of institution is almost unheard of in today's hedge fund/private equity economy. Back in the day They did tons of ground breaking research. Much of which was pure science, not just a product specific thing that could be brought to market in 18 months.

@Radical_EgoCom Unless you can find a PT job that actually pays the bills and you have enough time on the side to train for another job. This is why I insisted my kid get a free CNA certification (could have been welding or coding) before heading off to college.

I'm not sure it's a wage issue so much as it is a housing-cost issue. Capitalism is supposed to be regulated so that those numbers realistically work. Reagan broke it.

Yeah. I'm not against voting for politicians in the interest of workers and workers' rights, I'm only against the mentality that voting alone will solve the working class's problems. Voting is a means to an end, the end being the abolition of capitalism and the construction of a communist society, which will ultimately rely on the efforts of the working class to construct this new society from the bottom up, and likely against the wishes of the capitalist state

If I had created the meme myself I might have chosen a different country as an example. In any case, I wouldn't have used one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. It just wouldn't hit right.

You're misapprehending what is funny about the meme. It's not about Norway. It is about how Americans understand and view socialism.

Today is 87 years since Antonio Gramsci died at the hands of the Italian Fascists.

Gramsci, a founder and leader of the Italian Communist Party, was imprisoned by Mussolini’s regime in 1926. During his imprisonment he wrote extensively about history, politics and society.

His work on the role of culture, ideology, and the consent rulers obtain from those they rule has been influential in understanding how groups gain and maintain power.

The circumstances leading to the fascism of Gramsci's time are starkly comparable with the current rising tides of fascism; it terrifies me on a daily basis.

Nonetheless, Gramsci was optimistic about how people, together, can create change: 'when the individual can associate himself with all the other individuals who want the same changes ... the individual can be multiplied an impressive number of times and can obtain a change which is far more radical than at first sight seemed possible.'

simonvarwell,

"It is certain that the coming Revolution — like in that respect to the Revolution of 1848 — will burst upon us in the middle of a great industrial crisis. Things have been seething for half a century now, and can only go from bad to worse. Everything tends that way — new nations entering the, lists of international trade and fighting for possession of the world’s markets, wars, taxes ever increasing."

Decentralized and participatory decision-making isn't anti-intellectualism. It's about recognizing the value of diverse perspectives and expertise while ensuring that power remains distributed among all members of society, instead of concentrating power in the hands of a few.

Not mandatory, but voluntary participation open to the entire community. Such a system wouldn't require every person to be an expert in every field, but it would encourage individuals to contribute according to their abilities and interests, creating a sense of ownership and responsibility within the community while also valuing specialization and collaboration for the collective benefit.
