@unnameduser It was probably the last time a mainstream manufacturer there tried to do something different, though the niche players kept trying cool things, e.g. the McLaren F1. And maybe the 1980 Austin Mini Metro would count as sufficiently different, too. It might not look that unusual today, but I still remember what a big deal it was then.

Ready to revisit TÜVLITA.

Got a new fire extinguisher too, because the old one was 10 years old.

Need to figure out who services extinguishers around here for next time.

@pafurijaz That is really damned cool. Mobile geometry capture is a challenge in my industry. It would make our equipment programming way easier when we don’t get customer drawings ahead of time. Unfortunately, we work in very dirty environments. It can fool cameras, which makes the data unreliable. Such a bummer to not be able to use something so useful.

Spring brings new springs. For the car.

And one less previous owner nonsense (red springs).

No exceptional difficulties, the bolts for the shock absorbers needed some convincing to come out, but nothing serious compared to salt-soaked marine diesel bolts.

No spring compressor required, with the shocks disconnected I gently let the rear axle down until the springs could be lifted out.

A rear coil spring from an Astra J. It's red, rusty and snapped in half, roughly in the middle.

yngmar,
@yngmar@social.tchncs.de avatar

@ubo Neat. I did keep a dull circular saw blade thinking about making something with that, didn't know about spring steel.

It's something I'd like to try eventually, but can't go about setting up a forge in Schwiemu's sacred garden, so we need to find our own place first :)

My semi-regular 40-minute walk into town is radicalising me about #car #supremacy.

Whiskeyomega,
@Whiskeyomega@cupoftea.social avatar

@Gaolaitch I walk almost everywhere. When I realised I could walk into town it meant not relying on public transport anymore. Wouldnt mind a bike though again

Gaolaitch,
@Gaolaitch@cupoftea.social avatar

@Whiskeyomega Agreed. It’s a change of mindset to realise lots of journeys are walkable.
The (semi-rural) pavements where I walk are narrowed by hedge and nettle growth, so for about half my walk they are too narrow for mobility scooters or push-chairs, and verging on dangerous for me.
I keep meaning to sort out a bike, but that is a different kind of dangerous when car drivers feel they own the road and you are a slalom gate.

We've given corporations too much personhood. This line from @pluralistic rings true. Why else does a company need "intellectual" property?

When a business says it has "IP," it means that it has arranged its legal affairs to allow it to invoke the power of the state to control its customers, critics and competitors.

Are microplastics from car tyres contributing to heart disease?

"Add one more likely culprit to the long list of known cardiovascular risk factors including red meat, butter, smoking and stress: microplastics.

"In a study released Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, an international team of physicians and researchers showed that surgical patients who had a build-up of micro and nanoplastics in their arterial plaque had a 2.1 times greater risk of nonfatal heart attack, nonfatal stroke or death from any cause in the three years post surgery than those who did not."

https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2024-03-07/microplastics-may-be-risk-factor-for-cardiovascular-disease

The research is particularly noteworthy, given that one of the biggest sources of microplastic pollution is the synthetic rubber in car tyres: https://aus.social/@ajsadauskas/112015017609398126

So it's not just the sedentary lifestyles that car-dependent planning encourages that's causing health issues.

And it's not just exhaust fumes either.

There's also the health impacts of microplastics, including from car tyres.

Worth noting as well that internal documents from the big oil companies show that they knew since the 1970s that recycling wasn't going to solve the problem of plastic pollution. They promoted it anyway: https://aus.social/@ajsadauskas/112064312364853769

"[Products] are enshittified. The dozens of chips that auto makers have shoveled into their [product] are only incidentally related to delivering a better product. The primary use for those chips is autoenshittification – access to legal strictures ("IP") that allows them to block modifications and repairs that would interfere with the unfettered abuse of their own customers..."

This is yet another reason why you should buy a 2012 or older #car since the automotive, insurance, and data broker industries don't give a total shit about your #privacy and sadly the US aren't going to do jack about this until we can elect more people in office that does care and pass a strong privacy law in the process.

A must-read piece form @kashhill describes this continued urgency.

@joeo10 that “hard braking” definition thing has always bothered me. Seems as if when you know you’re being tracked, it would encourage red-light running. They can tell if you’re hard braking, but not running lights.

I tried one of the apps a while back (on my own, not linked to insurance provider), it frequently identified hard braking, and I could not stop gently enough to please it in regular driving.

joeo10,
@joeo10@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@cs Hard braking is a highly tracked "feature" and I know insurance companies know accurately though these tech.

I won't be surprised if these apps and insurance firms do include running lights are a tracked feature soon enough. It's another reason why the US needs a strong privacy law.

And there's great comments here too, including a long one from a disabled person going into some of the many ways car dependency makes life worse for disabled people.
