I wanted to say, I only found this by asking in a subreddit how to find this page. I had no idea about this page until then, and the original subreddit is private....
Hey, I am one of the former mods of /r/startpages (quit a few days ago since I don't use reddit at all anymore). Unfortunately I'm not sure if it's possible to send out a mass message to subscribers. I was hoping the private subreddit message would be enough to get the ball rolling over here but I guess I was wrong.
I was on /r/startpages since it's conception and know it took a long time to grow the community there as well. I do believe we'll hit a good momentum over here eventually but I am open to suggestions on growing faster.
I am still working full-time remote. There are definitely some social aspects of going to the office I miss, but I really don't miss the commute or the shitty office politics. Overall I feel I am still more productive from home and happier overall.
I started a job during the pandemic that doesn't even have an office in my province so I'm not going back to the office. I'm super happy about it, I can't even picture myself being in an office anymore. I have so much more free time without having the commute and being able to do chores while on the clock
As the fediverse continues to grow, let's reflect on some of the things that we disliked most about posting/lurking on reddit and what we can do differently now that we have a chance to build something new.
I think self promotion is alright sometimes like in the case where someone writes a really detailed technical breakdown of something. It's easier to format complex subjects on your own blog than in a thread. I totally agree if the entire purpose of someone's account is to boost their own website though
Yeah this is why I'm not a big fan of sites that have "Free Speech" as their number one thing. You can't tolerate the intolerant and freedom from hate speech is more important than unchecked free speech.
Yeah I am. I know there's a way to filter out keywords and I'd do that but I would still like to hear of any major developments. I just don't want to hear the same stories repeated over and over again
I assume for Meta's platform they'd just get defederated very quickly from others. I think it actually could be a good thing in regards to introducing average users to the fediverse (I say this as someone who despises Meta)
they think they're the centre of the country and ate better than everyone else,
lol this does not apply to Ottawa (Canada). We hate ourselves and know that most of the country forgets we exist. Even the leader of our province forgets we exist 90% of the time
Just 100x better than Canadian public transport :'). We just built an LRT line in Ottawa and it's down more often than it's working. It has cost the city ridiculous amounts of money to fix it even though it's brand new
Hello, with the spicy beehaw drama I was wondering, would it be possible to selfhost a lemmy instance literally just for yourself and no one else to like, circumvent any defederation shenanigans? As all instances federate per default, this should work right?...
Beehaw is defederating from sh.itjustwor.ks and Lemmy.world.Personally I think it's silly to be upset over it considering defederation is one of the selling points of Lemmy.
Beehaw is just going for a more curated experience which I think is completely fine. I'm sure once they have more moderators they'll consider refederating anyway.
Just noticed /r/mildlyinteresting and /r/minecraft went private as well. I've now taken /r/startpages and /r/androidhomescreen offline as well and don't plan on putting them back up unless reddit announces major redecisions.
I remember Voat. It's unfortunate it became an alt right hell hole because I liked the UI.
Also, I do agree that this has happened before and it's possible this could just have the same end result but I do think it's different this time. The last time, people were mad but it was for an easily forgettable reason. This time, mod tools are being ripped away from moderators and people are going to be forced to use the site from an app that they've actively avoided.
After these changes go through, every time a moderator tries to moderate their subreddit using only the terrible default tools or a mobile user uses the website through only the ad filled official app, they'll be reminded of how shitty the admins were.
I don't think Lemmy or kbin will reach the same levels of usage as reddit pre-this shit show but I do think reddit will take a huge hit with all of this.
Startpage activity here is dead...

Lemmy instances are being compromised by a js injection
lemmy.world and lemmy.blahaj.zone are down from what seems like a JavaScript injection attack
Tf happened to lemmy.world?
Went there and got some… less than savory images. Do not recommend going there....
How many of you are still working full-time remote and how is it going? If not, why not? Was the decision made by you to go back to the office or did your employer decide for you?

what's the point of all these random accounts creation? seems like a automated process. would it be to upload illegal stuff? (lemmyfly.org)
I've set registration to Require application again, don't like this bots creating accounts....
What were some "bad habits" on reddit that we should try to avoid bringing over here?

[Vote] Only those with an account on this instance should vote on the Agora.
Those in favor reply "Aye"...

How long until we have corporate instances in the Fediverse?
Not willing to give them ideas so fast....
What region of your country is the worst?
Most disgusting food, stupidest people, worst weather, whatever reason. What is the shittiest part of your country?

The plan for 3.13 is similar to early plans for 3.12.

Is it okay to lurk reddit without engaging?
