We could use more taxes on the wealthy of the world to have governments provide nuclear power reliably to everyone for cheap, run carbon capture plants and desalinate ocean water to make many more places livable. We could peacefully work to make more countries better places to live to decrease immigration disruption. I think we would do lots of stuff that would more easily solve problems at the root level if we weren't distracted fighting culture wars over who to blame for the symptoms.

I don't get how someone could serve as president from jail but it might be kinda cool to see.

I like what @John said about on yesterday's show. The second wave of people who joined NAS fucked up the whole thing and a little moderation is all that was needed. Makes me wonder if we couldn't boot up https://noagenda.social with mods and just some clarity that it's run by Dvorak, removing @adam from any responsibility. @eriner should have the domain. without moderation, NAS2 is just gonna be a shit show too. with moderation, it might get to federate widely.

So yeah, I do think people that believe this (or perhaps more importantly, are unwilling to tell their friends and family that they think it's all just made up like Greek mythology etc) have demonstrated a susceptibility to believe other kinds of propaganda (or just go along with it) too.

A great primer on why we have to fix college to fix the economic and political divides in the US. We should make a bachelor's degree part of the standard publicly paid for educational curriculum.

Many of the dissident voices that I want to join us here on the have now signed a statement they're calling the Westminster Declaration to demand free speech online. Instead of creating an instance here together and joining our movement for independence, they seem to just want to complain that everybody isn't supporting their principles. I checked if westminster dot social was available, but it was bought this year. So hopefully I'm wrong.

What do corporate board conversations about executive pay sound like? Do they really think that at the top they have to pay more to make the business run better, but that paying less makes perfect sense for all lower level employees? Or then what's with the lack of competition for the CEO jobs? #economics

Is it wrong to hope that if there's going to be a anyway, that they take out the pro gun politicians? I mean that would be the best way to be remembered, right? eliminate the people who make this possible so that the laws change and you might get to be the last one to ever do it.

That the claim about baby beheadings in now appears to be incorrect but was being repeated by most media outlets and even the president, is why spreading misinformation should not be considered a justification for kicking people off of or blocking servers. We're all just often wrong without knowing it.

the medium is the message?

complain about what influential people are saying or the messages/misinformation that some groups/governments are pushing, but please focus more on how this stuff propagates.

what services are we using that lets them decide what the masses see/hear? help people move to decentralized alternatives without ads or algos. if the problem is the public boosting their claims, work to advance critical thinking and engage the spreaders in good faith dialogue.

The danger of the excessive use of the can be seen in email today. If you're using your own domain name or server, the message often doesn't go through. The big email providers say they are doing this to prevent abuse, and maybe that's true. But the presumption of malice, the centralization of services and the use of shared block lists is bad for free expression and market competition. This can happen to too. Open protocols are not enough, it matters how we use them.

@adam

what you said on NA about NAS is correct generally, but it's not the medium. a few people always fuck it up for everybody else unless there's appropriate moderation. NAS and a few others have too little, most corporate media and many fedi servers that block NAS have too much. the trick is to favor free speech but not antisocial behavior. the "refuse to accommodate others in personal behavior" types.

decentralized social media is really important. like podcasting and . don't give up.

Excessive/confusing moderation policy threatens the growth of the . In turn, this threatens the potential for the network to let the public decide what gets attention and how culture evolves, eliminating the stranglehold of big tech, corporate media and the influence of money via advertising. I'm starting to fear this might be intentional.

Server relationships need to be transparent and limitations based on harm to the network, not claims of misinfo or bad opinions.

I know you think it's bad now, but without the expansive empathy that leads us to care about the public interest, we'd be so flooded with lies and basic bullshit that large complex societies would be impossible. We'd be stuck in small communities that completely misunderstood the world and thought crazy shit about everybody we didn't know. The incentives to misinform are just too good.

We just doubt conservatives' motives for freaking out about pedophiles and making movies like now when she brought this crap to your attention decades ago and you hated on her (this was pretty universal except for the hard left AFAIK). You still don't want to talk about the churches.

My experience is that conservatives are very concerned about "the propaganda" but rarely push back (or even express any concern) when it's coming from their side.

The opposite of a liberal (Enlightenment thinker, not lefty) is a (cave dweller, ala the Allegory of the Cave). Not a careful media consumer or critical thinker. Someone unwilling to engage with HQ criticism from other perspectives. Kinda an NPC or sheeple but w/o any ideological or partisan spin. And it implies the ability to change, to leave the cave. Not dumb, but some combination of being unaware they're misinformed or too scared/lazy to challenge their own biases.

Can #podcasting be made to work with #ActivityPub as well as #RSS? Then podcatchers could work like a #Mastodon client, allowing us to interact directly via comments, favorites and spreading around the best episodes via boosts. #podcasts

update: it exists but no podcatcher fully supports it yet.

The proves that social media is awesome and all the problems are due to ads, algorithms, data mining, centralization and the profit incentive generally. Do any journalists/researchers make this connection?

I want a more serious journalist than @tuckercarlson to interview #Putin. Someone who would bring up Nuland's #FuckTheEU recording, Merkel's comments on #Minsk, pipelines, but also his assassinations etc of his critics. While Putin wouldn't allow that, we also seem to lack journalists interested in all sides of the conflict. The public isn't dumb, it's poorly informed and distracted. And we're treated like children unable to critically consume any media biased "by the other side". #uspol

If went for viewpoint diversity, wouldn't it need to entertain flat earthers etc? So I'll agree that background diversity makes sense, but race and gender and sexual orientation are not enough. We should also want diversity of economic status, education and location etc. You have to try to do it all.

I'd rather there be harder lines drawn between reporting and commentary. Big orgs that try to be neutral for the former, total decentralization for the latter. All funded directly.
