I wonder why, around the turn of the century, hardware companies were much more likely to build their own state of the art tools (as in https://mastodon.social/@danluu/110793854770298212) than software companies. IBM had quite a few tools that were better than anything money could buy, not just SixthSense. Until its demise due to bad business decisions, DEC had even more impressive tooling than IBM.

Even the little startup I worked for mostly used a stack that was better than you could get via commercial tools.

@danluu as someone working on state of the art tools for hardware (my simulator at one point was faster than single-threaded verilator!) I'm very interested in what you have to write on this topic!

cool thing i recently learned someone i know has done: genetically modified her adipose cells to produce more estradiol. you can do this with testosterone too

(i'll probably try doing it at some point)

i'm actually more interested in modifying them to produce T, both because it's scheduled and because due to a kind of abuse that a lot of trans women long for (hint: it doesn't work out the way you think) I have a very difficult time being on E2 these days

(and you need either estrogens or androgens to avoid osteoporosis)

@zippy1981 I don't see why it wouldn't. that said it's not permanent (thankfully, or it'd be a really sketchy proposition); you get the effect for around a year

you can also use the approach if you have intact testicles (not sure about ovaries, that loop is more complicated)

you know what's funny? for a while in 2020 i was wondering if LLMs will leave me without a job, but it increasingly (look at SO, MDN, people saying "I talked to the PDF using AI something") looks like I'll not only have a job forever but I'll be paid considerably more :3

the seemingly-intentional destruction of community resources with "AI" might cause a rapid rise in personal and institutional incompetence but it also gets a bunch of guys in silicon valley promoted so it's impossible to say if it's bad or not

though if you are OK subcontracting this you can probably hire the person who got LUNA to work reliably

"being queer" means different things to different entities

part of what it means to me is that there might be a time where i find myself with all of my closest friends dead and the only path forward from there is finding new friends and continuing living, fully expecting that it might happen again in one's lifetime

(okay, all except for my headmate, that's one death i won't be able to deal with. fortunately also not the most likely one.)

you know things are going great when you deal with a PTSD trigger that caused you to basically not exist for several days and as you reflect on it afterwards, you have to acknowledge that the brain was in fact correct about the current situation having a direct, clear relation to the original traumatic one

sometimes a PTSD flashback is caused by someone putting a glass on the table a bit too loudly and it's nothing. but sometimes it is actually because a close friend is in a situation where they might die, again

people read me saying "reach heaven by violence" and think "maybe she doesn't mean actual violence. maybe she means the idea that your existence is an affont to the entropy of the universe and you better make that count" and it is true, that is one of the things i mean
