I just posted a long thread about our eclipse adventures, but this was the only photo I managed. I hauled my fancy, expensive astrophotography gear up with ambitions of capturing a lengthy timelapse, but none of it worked (battery wouldn't power up despite a full charge, mini PC wouldn't connect to wifi hotspot despite dozens of prior tests). It was still well worth the experience, but I would have loved to capture some better photos.

@Bradcopter I didn't expect traffic to be as bad as it was, so staying over night somewhere didn't even really enter my brain until we were several hours into the trip up there. I knew at that point we were in for an even longer trip home.

We had a number of plans at the ready based on the weather for the eclipse. As the day approached, it looked like Vermont was going to be it. The cloud forecast pushed us east from our original idea of Burlington, so I popped up the eclipse track and Google Maps and found a Price Chopper parking lot in Derby, Vermont. (1/8)

We left the house at about 8:15am for what Google initially said was going to be a 3.5 hour drive. It was, of course, significantly longer than that. We hit traffic all over the place. As we started to get into the path of totality, you could tell because there were people everywhere. All of the roadside parking areas on the highways were jammed with people pointing their cameras and telescopes at the sky and many residents were out in their yards. (2/8)

By the time we finally arrived at our destination, the partial eclipse was just getting underway. I scrambled to attempt to set up my telescope, but nothing worked. The battery I had charged the night before didn't turn on. I managed to borrow power from my friend, but my mini PC wouldn't connect to my wifi hotspot. My planned timelapse of the partial eclipse and video of totality were toast. So we sat back, watched the moon slowly slide in front of the sun, and took it all in. (3/8)

@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

We observed some interesting effects of the partial eclipse as the temperature dropped, the shadows got fuzzy, and the sky began to darken. It was an odd sort of dark - somewhere between a partly cloudy day and a full moon. We could see Venus below the moon and if we had turned around, we would have seen Jupiter as well. (4/8)

Once totality hit, it was a DRASTIC change. We watched through the eclipse glasses as the tiny sliver of sun slowly disappeared and then poof: darkness. We removed our eclipse glasses to see the dark moon surrounded by the corona and it was simply stunning. We could see some of the solar prominences with our naked eyes and I took the opportunity to snap a few photos with my DSLR. The 360 degree sunset was soo strange. 3.5 minutes of totality flew by and the sun popped back out. (5/8)

I packed up my non-functional astrophotography gear and we piled back into the car for the long ride home. This ride was an adventure. Google Maps was constantly trying to save us time by dumping us off the jam-packed highway onto jam-packed back roads. (6/8)

webcubus,
@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

The definite highlight was a dirt road that started with small children at the end of their drive way flipping off traffic, had a group of adults with a sign that said "U Honk We Drink", and intersected numerous other dirt roads. I'm not sure it saved us any time, but it was kind of fun. We had one other dirt road detour that just ended in a massive line of traffic, a bathroom/gas stop that took a full 30 minutes, and probably 2 hours spent trying to escape from Franconia, NH. (7/8)

webcubus,
@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

After we got through Franconia, we were pretty much home free...but still 2.5 hours from home.

All in all, it took us about 6 hours to get up there, 7.5 hours to get home, but it was totally worth it! (8/8)

My pastel sketch of during yesterday's . I wasn't there to see it in person this time, but I used the amazing photo shared by Tom Kerss (with permission) as a reference image. The looked so different yesterday than it did when we saw the 2017 eclipse because we were in solar minimum then and near solar maximum now. There were several lovely visible too

@MaryMcIntyreAstro nice work! It was absolutely stunning to see totality in person and this is a beautiful representation!

@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

@MaryMcIntyreAstro the views were lovely, but the traffic was brutal! Totally worth it.

Classic New England spring. It has been sleeting/raining/snowing/icing for the past 24 hours while the early spring flowers go about their business in full bloom. Taken outside the town library with my Pixel 4a 5G.

Stress testing the battery I'm borrowing from my dad for imaging the eclipse. I'm feeling confident I can capture the partial aspects of the eclipse, but totality is a bit of a wildcard for me.

I'll be capturing 50-frame videos every 60 seconds from start to finish with the solar filter on. During totality, I'm thinking I'll just pull the solar filter off and run the video for the whole duration without fiddling so I can just enjoy it. I'll bring my DSLR to snap some images too.

@codfather is AI actually already sentient and doing a shitty job at everything because it doesn't want us to keep prompting it?

I feel like I just accidentally invented the perfect #solar #astrophotography gadget for doing daytime polar alignment.

I mean, I guarantee someone has done something like this. I just figured I would have to make a custom 3d printed mount, not literally attach two random things with a screw.

@malcircuit nice! I definitely have both of those things laying around too.

We finally got another break in the weather and jumped on it. Surface conditions were great with small waves and comfortable air temperatures, but once we got down, viz was just OK and there was significant surge. Maybe the weather is going to turn soon? Maybe? Please?

I presented some photos at our local Photo Society meeting last week! The theme was The Philippines, so we had several presenters show images from different places around the country.

The link starts off at the beginning of my presentation, but the other presenters also showed some awesome photos and techniques so definitely check out the rest of the video too. Enjoy!

@Brandi_Buchman would it be correct to say that the settlement is basically both sides drop all the legal action and get back to actually negotiating?

Throwing it back to my visit to Oslob in The Philiippines! This place was crazy with huge crowds and a long wait, but wow was it worth it. When it was our turn, we boarded a long boat and they paddled us out to take our place in the long line. I hopped over the side and in 3 seconds was nose to nose with a whale shark! SO FUN!

I wasn't planning to do any solar imaging yesterday, but I changed my mind once I saw what the sunspots were up to! That large sunspot region is cranking out solar flares at an impressive rate. Hopefully I'll get another chance to image on a clearer day before they disappear around the side.

It was not a good day for solar imaging, but I pointed my scope (with solar filter, of course) at the sun and waited for a break in the clouds. I finally got a bit of one and captured 2000 frames of video. Normally, I tell the software to pick the top 25%, but that stack had weird artifacts. Lowering to 5% produced a really nice image, which might be my favorite yet.
