I'm now debating -- even more so now hearing that #Fosstodon is cracking down on non-English: I occasionally want to try to join a conversation in a language I'm learning (German) -- that I might fully jump ship to my Firefish account @BlakeL.
Up to this point the moderation and pressure here has kept me in check but I'd very much like to stay on good terms with my community and moderation.

I like the freedom the Firefish software gives me too.

    Can somebody, familiar with these kind of #electronics, please help me to identify this transformer, which was part of the power supply circuitry inside a #projector.
    A colleague of mine brought me his broken #beamer after, according to him, it had sparked out of its ventilation slits near the power plug, when he plugged it in.
    I looked at the circuitry and it became rather obvious that the transformer gave out, as the PCB was charred around it.

    Some more pictures. The top of the transformer reads "2940489" and "UM1413CG". Any ideas how I would go about finding out the electrical characteristics of this transformer so I can replace it with a fitting one? 🤔

    @mike805 Not entirely sure, no. But I'm quite confident in saying it's most likely not the cap in this case, as it looked brand-spanking new after I desoldered it. There were no charred spots on its bottom and it did not look ballooned at all.
    After desoldering the transformer, I was quite certain that it was the component that gave out.
    I suspect that two windings shorted and caused the sparks, but I'm not sure how to best test the broken transformer 🤔

    @FOSSingularity Hmmm, difficult question, but I'll try to give an answer...
    I got fantastic and ridiculously cheap dental care in Cambodia. General care was also good, if you paid for it, which should still be much, much cheaper than in the US.
    However, while being friendly to foreigners in general, I fear that they are not all that welcoming to queer folk 🫤
    I could imagine that Thailand could be an option, since they seemed to be more accepting

    I don't know where you live, but if you have never agreed to that, your doctor's office as well as this third party are already in violation of your rights 👀

    I've heard that with the extended earth prong, it even has an edge over the SchuKo standard used where I'm from

    It's literally a guide to Vienna's speciality coffee establishments with no intention of monetising in any way, and it will be expanded with a bunch of new features in the coming days. What would you say to a fully public and unrestricted API to pull all the lists and places?
    How crazy is it to do something like this in a project whose sole purpose is to display content?

    @yoavlavi You should be able to install your derivation in your profile straight from your local nixpkgs with nix-env -f <path-to-nixpkgs-on-your-machine> -iA package if you have already built it locally with nix-build
    If you plan on doing something else, look into creating an overlay.
    There are more ways to skin this cat, but if I understand correctly want you are trying to do, than that will probably be the easiest way.

    I know it’s a bit of a mess; I am in the process of putting in an SSD in a 2014 mac mini along with a NVME drive as well.

    Im turning this into a retro gaming monster (PS2 and below).

    And is there any actual difference in performance to a SATA SSD?
    I got a similar Mac Mini a while ago and NixOS runs like a charm on it :nixos:

    Do you know if the adapter also reports temperatures, so that the Mac Mini can adjust the fan speed accordingly?
