Hey fellow Neopixel/WS2812 fans: know of any in-production versions of smaller LED rings using 3535- or 2020-sized WS2812/SK6812 LEDs? (as opposed to the standard 5050 sizes most rings use) Seems like it’d be a great solution for putting around pots/encoders. I can’t find any on Ali

After just over four years, today will be my last day at @Raspberry_Pi. It’s been a great place to work! I’ve really enjoyed my time there and hope I’ve visibly made some difference to the quality of writing and documentation around the products. Because documentation is always just about helping people get things done.

@aallan @Raspberry_Pi Thank you, Al! The docs are top-notch,
I have at least one of the PDFs open daily as reference.

I’m pretty proud of my THX Deep Note sound recreation attempt, which I realized I only posted on Twitter (RIP). So I upload it to Youtube & here. The Mozzi synth library is great and it was fun getting it to do this. And thanks to Mike Rugnetta for getting me near the rabbit hole of the THX sound!

A tiny breadboard hosts a tiny circuitboard and a headphone jack going to a bluetooth speaker. The circuitboard is powered by a phone battery pack via a small red USB cable. A hand plugs the cable into the battery pack to start the sound playing.

@brainwagon Thanks! Yeah the most I’ve seen from the creators is this score released by THX a few years ago

Several folks asked if they could get the little capacitive touch wheels I made as a badge add-on giveaway for Hackaday Supercon 2024. Now you can get them in my Tindie store!

There’s a neat new core library in CircuitPython: bitmapfilter. Originally designed for the PyCamera project, it’s got many useful operations for generative art stuff like I do in Processing/p5js. Here’s a start: random circles bluring away. note, it does require a fast processor like the ESP32-S3 as on this great Lilygo board. Code: https://gist.github.com/todbot/5b649b0ff314f2e723b6dd68d36c05b5
Thanks @stylus for your work on this library!

@stylus Now playing with bitmapfilter’s Photoshop-like channel ops to give a nice fade-to-black for evolving spirograph-like shapes. I love how it looks like blossoming flowers sometimes. These whole-screen updates really highlight how fast the 8-bit parallel displays are on these Lilygo boards.

todbot,

@stylus Now noisy lissajous trails that combine a channel op for style-based fading and a Gaussian blur on the fade, with the fade style changing every few seconds. Mesmerizing to me! I just stare at this for minutes. Here’s a sample. Code: https://gist.github.com/todbot/224c690a9fc2c15e972a2e963deb13fa

More CircuitPython capacitive touch sensing madness w/ the Pico. Now I can do touch sliders and touch wheels. Is this board interesting to anyone else, should I put it in my Tindie store?

Woohoo I am a KiCad master now! Or at least I know enough to default to it instead of Eagle. Finally. Plus I found a neat capacitive touch sensor chip that I got working in CircuitPython and Arduino on a Pico

Two hands hold a blank PCB with 20 touch pads on one side and traces on the other. Underneath, two of the same kind of PCBs are plugged into a breadboard with a Raspberry Pi Pico and a grid of LEDs, and tapping on the pads lights up a corresponding LED.

I made a little 3d-printable case for my “qtpy_synth” test board to help me play with CircuitPython synthio (and Arduino Mozzi). It works pretty well, I like it better than the standoffs I originally started with. And now can have some cool matching 3d-printed knobs! https://www.printables.com/model/757087-case-for-qtpy_synth-circuitpython-synthesizer

One week, 7 tracks! I’ve been trying “Jamuary” for real this year: track per day for a month. Trying to only spend 30 mins on the idea and 30 mins practicing / “performing” on camera. Haven’t busted that budget too badly, but oof it’s hard not getting side-tracked. The playlist thus far:

Jamuary is officially done for me. I made it to 26 tracks, ran out of steam towards the end 🫠 It was a really fun exercise to come up w/ a new idea each day! It also forced me to learn the Deluge & Virus more, probably the biggest win. And got some good ideas for exploration later
