Proton has released Von App?

Well, it was bound to happen.

If a bunch of scientists and coders get together where the world's largest and expensive man-made ring (the LHC) was forged deep underground, it was only a matter of time before Tolkein's writing started to influence the decisions made by Proton.

Von App to rule them all,
Von App to find them,
Von App to bring them all
and in the darkness bind them.

There are many reasons for choosing #private alternatives to Big Tech. Tracking cookies, targeted ads, and closed source software are just the tip of the iceberg. 🧊

What #privacy concerns are keeping you up at night? 🤔

timepencil,

@Tutanota I worry about the 'back end' software that is used by providers like Tuta.com and Proton.me

Sure, their 'clients' may open source, and they may even publish the code that is purportedly used on their servers. But there's no chance of verifying whether or not that's actually the code that is used on the actual servers.

Not that being given access to the code used on the servers would help me; the last time I wrote a program, it was in BASIC.

10 PRINT "RUN FOR THE HILLS!"
20 GOTO 10

timepencil,

@fart_pickle @protonprivacy
If Proton develops a "feature that detects and labels faces and features in the pictures stored in a Proton Drive," I will IMMEDIATELY extract every photo and file of mine from Proton Drive, and then CLOSE my Proton account.

Having that feature would probably require users to provide their password to the system performing the 'facial recognition' scan. That would be a HUGE vulnerability.

If I ever want my privacy destroyed, I'll use Apple, Google, Facebook, etc.

protonprivacy, to DeGoogle
@protonprivacy@mastodon.social avatar
timepencil,

@protonprivacy It's ironic that if one wants to #DeGoogle and one clicks the "How to use Proton Pass" option within the Android App, then instead of a Proton support page...
...it's a link to a YouTube video.

So, the steps to #DeGoogle are:

  1. Download Proton Pass.
  2. Re-engage with Google via a YouTube video.
  3. Start using Pass.
  4. Forget where that link takes users and hit it again, and again, and again.
  5. Try to clean my video history from my Google account.

Well done, Proton!

timepencil,

@protonprivacy Hopefully, they'll fix it soon. If they don't, then the following sentence becomes a lie:
"At Proton, we believe that a better world begins with privacy, and our mission is at the heart of everything we do."

As we at Tuta embrace full transparency, here are details on the technical issues beginning of April.

➡️ https://tuta.com/blog/availability-issues-android-desktop

Again we would like to apologize to all affected users. While this was not a general outage, affected users were not able to use their Tuta mailboxes for multiple hours, which is not acceptable. If on a paid plan, they will get a compensation. We fixed the issue on April 6 and implemented additional monitoring measures to prevent such issues in the future.

timepencil,

@Tutanota That's great news, Tuta.
If only the desktop client for Win10 would start working again.

While using my VPN, I can access my Tuta account using a web browser, but the desktop client only ever says, "The connection to the server was lost. Please try again."

This is despite trying to get the client to log in while the browser session (with the same IP address) is active.

Even placing "Tuta Mail.exe" into the VPN's split tunnel doesn't permit access via the desktop client.

Not fixed..

If you had to choose one emoji to describe #privacy what would it be?

Let us know in the comments!

timepencil,

@Tutanota <?> a skull and crossbones ☠️
Oh! PRIVACY, not 'piracy'... which is, ironically, what big tech does to steal our personal data.

Privacy implies encryption.

How about creating a new emoji?
In emoticon form, it could be:
This:
¿?
Or this:
¿?
Or this:
(¿
?)

Reminiscent of the ECDHE.

timepencil,

@Tutanota Looking forward to Tuta releasing a functioning PC desktop app.

timepencil,

@Canoa @Tutanota
Tuta for Win10 used to work. However, snce its last update, it glitches between "Error message: can't remove app pass wrapper without salt" and not being able to establish, or maintain, an internet connection.
I've done everything suggested by various sites, and even gone so far as to do a "clean install" of Windows.

There's no note so secret as the one never sent.

timepencil,

@Canoa @Tutanota
Yes, possibly Win10 related. There may also be some "niche" setting, or my system settings could be an "edge case" that's caused the glitch.
Unless I can work it out, I'll just have to look elsewhere for a suitable EESP...
...or buy a new Win11 PC. At least then I'd have a TPM onboard.
