comparing a 2020 chromebook (10th gen Intel, I think) with 2023 chromebook (12th gen Intel), the speedometer score has TRIPLED in 3 years (from 110 to 307). That's very good news. 👏 https://browserbench.org/Speedometer2.1/

On 5th May 1945, the SS launched an assault on Itter Castle in Austria.

Defending the castle were a mix of US Army and Wehrmacht soldiers, and French politicians, celebrities who had been prisoners of war.

It remains one of the most unique battles of WW2, and the only major documented instance of the US Army and Wehrmacht fighting side-by-side.

Here's how this remarkable series of events unfolded /1 🧵 #history #histodons

I think anyone older than 40 or so has vivid memories of Levesque. Weirdly, despite his program, the polls showed he was popular even among Anglos.

A bit of photogeekery here. This taken in 2011/04 in an attempt to see what happened when you pushed the digital sensors of the day crazy-far, in this case a Pentax K-5 at ISO 25600.

Blogged about it: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/201x/2011/04/18/Extreme-Low-Light

The branch looked sort of cool with a rough-edged impressionist vibe, colors pleasingly wrong. Today, I fed the picture through Lightroom’s fancy new AI-driven noise-reducer.

The notion that federated social media depends existentially on scalable moderation is obviously getting momentum. Here are two efforts I've run across that are focusing on this. One is a non-profit, the other smells like a startup company:

  1. https://about.iftas.org
  2. https://www.lassomoderation.com

@interfluidity Um… sure, there could be lots of flavors. But a good working assumption is that nobody wants to see, for example, Nazis or crypto-scammers. And I think shared efforts can be very helpful in achieving that initial baseline goal.

Anyone else getting crypto scam in private mentions on Mastodon? Just had two come in quick succession.

Fediverse had its first really concerted aggressive spam attack this morning. Usual crap, create loads of synth accounts, DM-spam people at random. Current attack has been beaten back, people are working on avoiding repeats.

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@kissane @film_girl @Meyerweb That's a little weird. Those of us who are instance mods in Pacific time woke up this morning to a flurry of reports.

    @Teri_Kanefield I strongly recommend hitting "report" and clicking the box that says "notify their server". The fabric of Fediverse moderation depends directly on putting the onus on each instance's admins to police their population with failure leading to defederation, but we gotta get the word to those admins.

    A few weeks ago I bought a Google ChromeCast (4K, with Google TV). A week ago the remote app on my Android stopped working - web searches on the symptom reveals that This Just Happens To People Nobody Knows Why.

    Last night, the ChromeCast just stopped working. No symptom, just no video showing.

    Beginning to feel like #ChromeCast is just a deeply shitty, broken product. Shame on you, Google.

    Freelancers on an hourly pay scale: how do you track your time? Is there an app that's particularly good? Do you log into a spreadsheet? Something else?

    @ben My wife & I both use Paymo, I find it intuitive and easy and it does everything I need, from tracking time and tasks to generating invoices. Seems to pretty well Just Work. Not free but acceptably cheap.

    Who the fuck is this asshole? Anyone who wants to claim Mastodon is full of zen needs to look at pieces of shit like this guy who crawled into my mentions to make assumptions b/c I happen to like pop culture. I like art a lot too and if you want to get art snob about it, let’s go .

    LOL, #TheBadSpace is not Ro's personal list of sites that I don't like.

    It's a collection of instances that multiple locations have banned.

    Instances aren't on there because they annoy me. They are there because they have a history of poor behavior, harassment, and abuse.

    They are the worst of the worst.

    @timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

    @Are0h There's a bunch of work going on in this area, but there needs to be more. One example: https://writer.oliphant.social/oliphant/the-oliphant-social-blocklist

    @Jonathanglick Is this out of the reach of current bank tech? Hmm, I guess that conventionally requires at least an email account. Haven't been tracking the throughput of modern blockchains…

    @chargrille@progressives.social avatar

    It is extremely odd that tech journalists do not seem to have any idea of who exactly owns #bluesky

    Even odder that they don’t care to find out and inform their readers.

    timbray,
    @timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

    @chargrille I assembled a pointer to that research, plus more or less everything else we know about Bluesky, here: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2023/04/28/Bluesky

    It’d be nice if someone who has an account with the Delaware Division of Corporations could go to https://icis.corp.delaware.gov/eCorp/EntitySearch/NameSearch.aspx and search for "bluesky pbllc" and pay $20 to retrieve whatever’s behind the pointer you get.

    timbray,
    @timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

    @chargrille @davetroy Wasn't there for that question, don't recall seeing it (or the answer).

    timbray,
    @timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

    @chargrille @davetroy

    Ah, right, no answer, just clarified the Board makeup. The only statement I've seen on that is "The company is owned by the team itself…" which obviously is highly incomplete.

    timbray,
    @timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

    @chargrille
    I agree 100% that this should be disclosed and it’s appropriate to call journos out. Having said that, I’m not terribly worried, because unless they’re flat-out lying, the protocol itself and the code implementing it are unencumbered open source.

    BTW I’ve been digging and the much-ballyhooed ATProtocol is unfinished and many of the features are unimplemented.

    timbray,
    @timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

    @fifilamoura @chargrille @davetroy

    My heart is with the Fediverse and I haven’t the vaguest notion whether Bluesky is technically sound, but I do not think the evidence I’ve seen supports the libertarian-fever-dream hypothesis.

    Disclosure: I've been saying in public since last November that no commercial entity has the remotest chance of being the next Twitter. (And a good thing.) I still think so.

    mmasnick, to random
    @mmasnick@mastodon.social avatar

    Over on Bluesky @xor pointed out this interesting analysis of AT Protocol (not all positive) from back in November... from someone who now (well after writing that) works for Bluesky. It's worth reading if you're trying to understand the differences between ActivityPub and AT Protocol. https://bnewbold.net/2022/atproto_thoughts/

    Cool pointer ⬆️. Joe Beda did a YouTube of poking around ATProtocol and explaining various things, I thought it was super useful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tZrxSyRPH0
