"They're not called 'scrums' in the Scrum guide".

Really? Is that true?

thirstybear,
@thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

@jasongorman In what context? You get “sprints” and the “daily scrum”

https://scrumguides.org/docs/scrumguide/v2020/2020-Scrum-Guide-US.pdf

thirstybear,
@thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

@jasongorman It is worth keeping tabs on the guide IMO since there have been some useful insightful tweaks, and it shuts down idjits who think they know it but have never read it. But like all frameworks, it is for the guidance of the wise, and blind adherence of fools.

The daily standups are indeed called “scrums”. See Page 9. Also cf. “scrum of scrums”, and the history of why it was called “Scrum” in the first place…

thirstybear,
@thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

@jasongorman Also (as I know you know) it doesn’t matter what TF you call that daily scrum… it’s the purpose that counts: daily course corrections. It doesn’t even have to be a meeting, it just needs to be short, unobtrusive, effective, and identify any tweaks in approach needed by the team to deliver what was promised in the sprint time box.

thirstybear,
@thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

@jasongorman (unless of course you’re doing “pure” Scrum, in which case it’s defined in The Holy Manual….)

Being schooled in why conversations in dev teams should be time-boxed, by the "Global Head of Agile" at a company with 1 employee. (I'm especially impressed by the certification he's given himself.)

thirstybear,

@jasongorman Ah yes. A phrase that makes my heart sink since it always precedes unwelcome (and mostly incorrect) interference.

Is it me, or are Amazon now actively ignoring Trading Standards and Advertising Standards Authority, and actually taunting them because they are so toothless?

Two orders in a row saying “Next Day Delivery”, one arrived 3 days late, one looks like it will be a day late.

"But how does it scale?" is a common question for organizational transformation initiatives. The answer is that it scales primarily via enthusiasm and learning, not via structure or framework.

Example:

Let's say the required outcome is to move 100 people over 10 kilometers. Do you:

  1. Build a juggernaut that fits 100 people 🚚 - the "framework" approach
  2. Organize a 10km fun run and train people up 🏃 - the nimble, humane approach

The 10km run is the way

#transformation #FastFlow

WTF StackOverflow?

https://techcrunch.com/2024/05/06/stack-overflow-signs-deal-with-openai-to-supply-data-to-its-models/

Mystic Chris predicts we will see a worsening of AI generated code quality and increasing churn when the data firehose gets switched on.

Who wants to be simply a codemonkey chasing avoidable bugs in unreadable, untestable code? That's where we're heading. Wave goodbye to elegant and reliable software.

Just seen: “Psychic life coach” 🤔

As a trained coach, whose experience been professionally assessed and accepted for a professional qualification, and who also has a PostGrad Cert in the subject, I'm wondering where I can get the “psychic" part of my training…

thirstybear,
@thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

Joking apart, this horrifies me - life coaching (as opposed to ‘agile coaching’) can do real mental damage if not handled carefully, yet it is an unregulated industry. If you need a life coach then please use a reputable one, preferably trained and ICF accredited.

thirstybear,
@thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

Actually “agile coaching” can damage a team's mental wellbeing too. Just a different way 😁 But it ain't coaching in this context.

Yes, you can learn a lot looking at the code in GitHub repos. But if you really want to learn from a repo, you need to look past the latest snapshot of the code and examine its history. Software evolution's a movie, not a photo.

thirstybear,
@thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

@jasongorman Please don't look at my repos. Some are a total trainsmash of experimentation and “trying 💩 out”. Context is important too 🙂

I'll go through them and tidy them up when I have jam for tea….honest…(“The rule is - jam tomorrow, and jam yesterday. But never jam today” 😉)

I can’t help thinking we have AI the wrong way around. It is being used as a substitute for creativity rather than a way to automate the dull chores. And if we persist down that road we will suck the joy out of our lives.

On a regular basis, I see posts on social media from people who have evidently never even visited the UK claiming that London "has fallen" to "the Muslims".

Don't be fooled by this far-right propaganda. London's fine. It's the vibrant and diverse global capital it always was. There are no "no-go areas". It's a complete fabrication.

Frankly, I feel safer at night in central London than in many provincial town centres.

thirstybear,

@jasongorman Is that old nonsense still going around? 🙄

@jasongorman I trust you reported the poster (not that it stops them)

LinkedIn does seem to be rapidly developing a content problem. I find my feed is now mostly a vapid stream of fantasists and snake oil salefolks. The one or two pieces of decent content are swamped by cruft. And since I (and others) simply don't have the time to play their algorithm games, it has become useless to me for generating leads.

LinkedIn has jumped the shark 🦈

Anyone else find the online simulated book format really annoying?

Eg. https://online.flippingbook.com/view/372486/

(Also, do any usability folks have any ideas why I should find it unusable? I suspect it's something to do with ignoring the paradigms of modern tablets & OSes, but can't quite put my finger on why I hate them quite so much)

1st May. Ah yes, that means tomorrow is 2nd May, and polling day in the UK for local elections.

Remember to

  • Take suitable ID (after all, a whole 2 people were convicted of electoral fraud in 2022 😱 <cough>voter suppression<cough>)
  • Remember your ABC. “Anyone But Conservative”.
  • If in doubt, check a tactical voting site for who to vote for to remove the Tory incumbent.
