Has anyone noticed that when powering up and logging into a MacBook Pro, you can type your password on your wireless Magic Keyboard…..

….even when Bluetooth is turned off?

Spooky! 👻

    It says something about the state of "modern" printers that I have to sit and supervise the whole operation as it can't be trusted to print a short document on its own.

    @stevefenton It’s worth remembering Rage Against the Machine never clarified which machine they were raging against.

    So quite possibly a printer?

    I've worked with enough great software developers who don't have computing degrees to be pretty darned sure at this point that you don't need one to do this job.

    thirstybear,
    @thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

    @jasongorman To be honest, my experience to date is that having a computing degree is a pretty good indicator that you cannot do this job

    Well that's annoying. There was a useful suite of docker aliases I used to use, but I can't find them just as I'm going deep into Dockerworld again (first time in quite a while). <sigh>

    My old self-hosted git repo to the rescue! I knew I had them somewhere!

    Now, why is docker ps -q now failing to return anything….what’s changed?

    @jasongorman I have worked with developers who think exactly like that 😂

    This is the reason why I currently actively discourage the use of GAI when writing code. It’s snake oil. There might be potential there, but not for another 10-50 years of heavy investment and development. I can’t help thinking Step 1 has to be generating a training set of data from people who know what they are doing rather than simply scraping the nonsense on the internet.

    thirstybear,
    @thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

    @jasongorman Agreed. I can see that issue

    But what the researchers seem to be saying here is that AI reflects the current wider understanding of software development as reflected in the training data. Which IMO isn’t great. “Roll up! Roll up! Buy our snake oil that lets you generate average code 10 times faster!”. That’s right up there with “Offshore your development, and fail to deliver 10 times cheaper!”

    So maybe simply improve the quality of the training data to shift the average quality?

    @jasongorman This is why I say that anyone using “tools” like Copilot need to have sufficient industry experience and critical thinking skills to pick the diamonds from the tsunami of BS it spews. The majority of time it’s quicker to bypass it. Think “net-negative developer”.

    Crikey! Same exercise, same requirements. Some wrote 20 tests. Some wrote 60 tests. Now looking at a solution with > 1,700 tests! (Data-driven, of course).

    It’s always nice to see ideas I published resurface and gain traction after being dormant for years 🤷‍♂️

    thirstybear,
    @thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

    Of course I might have reinvented the ideas that someone else had years before, but couldn’t gain traction…. And so on, ad infinitum 😁

    thirstybear,
    @thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

    @stevefenton Very true. Sometimes an idea isn’t ready for mainstream. Sometimes it just needs to percolate a bit, to age like a good wine. Or cheese.

    Also I am very, very lazy at putting my ideas out there for a wider audience, after all what do I know? So it’s nice to see something resurface, suggesting that I might have been onto something after all 🙂

    thirstybear,
    @thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

    @jasongorman Of course, in my day we only had 16kb, and we had to type it the programs by hand. In hexadecimal. AND it used to lose all its data when it wobbled….

    Thinking back on new technology, whether it's been languages, frameworks, databases, IDEs, or tools... I don't recall the marketing being "Responsible Databases", or "text editors for good".

    Seems like there's a problem if you need to keep talking about safety issues.

    thirstybear,
    @thirstybear@agilodon.social avatar

    @stevefenton It would help if we did talk about text editor safety. I mean, vi is definitely evil, and don’t get me started on LaTeX….
