Okay, picking up from my video game post yesterday, I'm curious:

When you play video games, rpgs, ect, where you get to choose your character, do you tend to choose a character of the same sex, the opposite sex, non-binary, anthropomorphic, or a mysterious 4th option?

If you want to share screenshots of character builds I would enjoy that!

sunlitrain,

@RickiTarr I play same gender, females, 80% of the time. It's been and (I have kids so I'll play with them there.) for a long time now.

Ruth Łchav’aya K’isen Miller (Dena’ina Athabaskan and a member of the Curyung Tribe) and Deenaalee Chase-Hodgdon (Deg Hit’an Dene and Sugpiaq) have a radical vision: To reinvigorate ancient #Indigenous trade practices as a means to redistribute wealth, return land and water in #Alaska to Indigenous stewardship, and show that a healthy economy and clean environment can coexist.

sunlitrain,

@Toastie I just read this article last night. Beautiful photography and good insights. ♥️

Great article in NYT Magazine about how development of space could have been Star-Trek-utopian but is instead a hyper-capitalist-free-for-all, by Jaime Green. "What kind of space-faring species do we want to be?"

Including quotes from @planet4589, Alice Gorman, and me.

sunlitrain,

@sundogplanets @planet4589 It's a good article. I submit that we are still working on the more general question: What kind of species do we want to be?

Sigh. On the bright side, a day where I'm thinking about space is always better than one where I'm not. 🥰

Did I just tell the bus driver one of my kids is sick and then tell him the wrong name, and then refer to a really awesome resonant TNO as a "guy" in a research email? Yes, yes I did. It's going to be a long day...

sunlitrain,

@sundogplanets Emergency floofy coffee day.

The Scientists Watching Their Life’s Work Disappear

Some are stubborn optimists. Others struggle with despair. Their faces show the weight they carry as they witness the impact of climate change.

sunlitrain,

@johnshirley2024 I don't work in the fields but I studied and follow them. I struggle with this multiple times a day. Sadness.

Found a new word published in the May 2023
@highcountrynews. "Endling" which is "the final lonely member of a species on the brink." Specifically used about the Behren's silverspot butterfly in California.

I've known we needed such a word for a long time but it feels particularly poignant to actually find it and see it being used.

  • sunlitrain,

@AbandonedAmerica I read your 2-3 feet and blinked. I have never seen one that is only 2 feet tall. I guess they could be as little as 3 but they have always seemed bigger to me. Here are my latest encounters - from my car - along the Alcan in May 2022. I did not get out and measure. In the closest one, I didn't even stop. 😂

A black bear looking at the camera from about ten feet away, patchy snow on the rough field behind it.

    sunlitrain,

@AbandonedAmerica I thought it looked like a grizzly too but an actual expert corrected me. Lol!

Maybe there are regional size differences at play. 🤷
