Those foam inserts that were supposed to protect our CD sets? Hmm. Perhaps not so much…

The discs are fine after 30 years, but the packaging:

@ianRobinson but quite a few more than me (and I walk pretty much every day)

    @schwa it’s the endless cycle. I imagine there‘ll likely be some nominal exec casualties for appearances, then the surviving execs say “I have a cunning plan, but it requires hiring more headcount” and it all begins again.

    Feels like the ghost of wholesale telecoms past has visited tech.

    No, Apple, a well thought-out minimalistic pomodoro app from an indie developer is not spam. It provides users with a choice. Stop insulting developers, Apple.

    https://breaks.app by @zachwaugh was rejected by Apple as spam because the App Store already contains pomodoro apps with similar concepts. The App Store also contained quite a few journaling apps before you launched your Journal app yesterday, Apple.

    @stephent@mastodon.social avatar

    @simonbs @zachwaugh FWIW, I once had the ‘spam’ rejection when I submitted an app that had previously been submitted (in substantially different form) under another dev account. It had never even been released, but it seems it was picked up by some form of binary scanning/matching. I wrote to explain that the intellectual property had been legally transferred to a different company, and it was approved. (No idea if that might apply here, but sharing just in case.)

    Milde's tarantula-hawk wasp (Pepsis mildei). Can't emphasize how huge this wasp we saw in Mexico is — size of my thumb. Females tickle the web around a tarantula hole to lure it out, sting the spider to paralyze it, drag it back in, and lay one egg. The larva hatches and eats the still-living spider. Pretty metal.

    Here's a post I wrote over the weekend reporting on a useful AI meeting at the World Economic Forum ... and calling bullshit on so much happening at OpenAI:
    https://buzzmachine.com/2023/11/19/artificial-general-bullshit/

    stephent,
    @stephent@mastodon.social avatar

    @jeffjarvis I think you’re likely to lose a few people with statements like this: “The output of ChatGPT: Bullshit.” It needs more context.

    Many people, myself included, find it a highly useful tool, limitations and inaccuracies notwithstanding.

    stephent,
    @stephent@mastodon.social avatar

    @jeffjarvis true, but it’s an incomplete characterization. If you acknowledge no benefits of ChatGPT I fear you're less likely to persuade on the valid criticisms.

    Apple has two great multipurpose game-ready engines on all of its platforms: SceneKit (for 3D), and SpriteKit (for 2D).

    Except visionOS, which tells you not to use them.

    It favors RealityKit, which isn’t a general purpose game engine that can be used across all of Apple’s other platforms.

    I think taking away a key enabling technology like SceneKit is a terrible move. ‘NIH’ on display. Competing platforms would kill to have something as powerful as SceneKit built right in and easy to use

    stephent,
    @stephent@mastodon.social avatar

    @stroughtonsmith I love SceneKit but it has been hobbled for years by the random walk of ARKit then RealityKit, plus repeated undocumented behavioral changes from one iOS version to the next. Such a shame. And now visionOS…

    I'm in England for a bit, and as always, so jealous of the vegetarian culture here. Walking around London, I assured my kid: "any place we see that has a burger will also have a veggie burger." I know it's not 100%, but it's a LOT more common than in the US.

    1. horizontal scroll container (e.g., https://ryanmulligan.dev/blog/full-bleed-table-scrolling/)

    Imperial units are a pain all round, but I cannot even begin to describe how maddening “thousandths of an inch” are. OH LOOK.. AREN’T DECIMALS USEFUL? I suppose that some other weird subdivision of an inch would be worse, but really, if you can cope with thousandths of an inch, what’s so hard about a centimetre? #units #rant

    stephent,
    @stephent@mastodon.social avatar

    @helenczerski I used to work on threatrical automation systems, including some projects in the US. Some clients wanted positions to be displayed in, of all the possible absurd units, decimal feet. 🙄

    I suppose the rationale was ‘I kinda know what a foot is and the rest is a choice between the illegible [fractional inches] and the largely useless [fractional foot]’.
