Chevy Silverado EV RST first drive: Incredible range and power, but is it worth the hefty price? [Video] https://electrek.co/2024/05/23/chevy-silverado-ev-rst-first-drive-range-power-but-is-it-worth-price-video/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon

@electrek I wonder how many people like me consider their smartphone more important than their car & therefore won't be buying any GM without Android Auto or CarPlay features.

After Spark went awry with v3 redesign, I've been looking for a polished, clean email app for Mac. Email is NOT a todo app and #InboxZero should be norm.

For me Thunderbird has too many issues (it's not modern, too many panels and tabs, etc...). Mailspring-Libre has too many bugs and it's not developed any more.

Stumbled upon @mimestream beta. It's not FOSS, but it's beautiful and functional on macOS. Highly recommended.

@stepheng@mastodon.online avatar

@rolle

How on earth did Spark go SO wrong with v3? I keep thinking they'll realize that everyone is leaving ... but they're still moving forward, so maybe not everyone is leaving?

Have you considered your absolute top important feature for your mail app? For me, it's search - and sadly few apps can do it well.

@mimestream looks awesome, thanks for the share!

Hi Everybody!👋

It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life and forget to appreciate the small joys. Take a moment each day to savor something that brings you happiness, whether it's a cup of coffee, a good book, or a beautiful sunset. These small moments can add up to big happiness.

The more you learn to count the little joys in life, the more you’ll notice them around.

vs. (Todo.TXT)

Sound off!

I've been using my own system which is mainly just $EDITOR and a script that takes out completed tasks every day by grepping out lines that begin with "X "
The problem is that it would be nice to just see a couple most important tasks at a time, instead of having a blood-chilling text file FULL of todo items in your face all day 😅

stepheng,
@stepheng@mastodon.online avatar

@RL_Dane I love the forced organization of #taskwarrior when you use a GTD approach

I recommend keeping it simple (don't use projects and contexts right away) and really get into the process of setting wait: and depends: on tasks until the only tasks that show up when you run 'task' are things you can work on right away

(When I see something new or non-actionable on the list, I break it down into actions by annotating and creating new pre-tasks and sub-tasks by using the depends: feature)

Oh cool, DuckDuckGo now accepts pay-for-placement and doesn't review ads manually and so, now scam websites are in first position.

Cool cool cool.

@fasterthanlime Duck duck seems to be sliding down the slope. Not sure why they keep trying crappy ideas that make them like the others.

Anyone have a recommendation? I've tried kagi.com and it was OK. Do we all have to go back to Lycos and AltaVista?

It’s the end of the line for yearly Windows 10 updates, says Microsoft

Windows 10 will still get security updates until mid-October 2025.

stepheng,
@stepheng@mastodon.online avatar

@arstechnica With #Windows11 anti- #Privacy defaults and other anti-user behavior made Windows 10 the very last version of Windows for me (and probably many others)

Who allows ads on their OS? Everyone who uses Windows 11.

Microsoft-branded mice and keyboards are going away after 40 years

Higher-end Surface-branded accessories will carry on, at least for now.

stepheng,
@stepheng@mastodon.online avatar

@arstechnica Bummer. Microsoft always made the best mice, in my experience. I'm using a 2006 model still on many computers - so maybe this is the downside of making extremely reliable and durable products for years.

In comparison, the Surface branded stuff has all had wear and tear issues within a short period.

At some point, someone needs to do a investigative report on how many historic, vacant (but viable) buildings were demolished and condemned to surface parking lots in Downtown in the service of a shallow, one-time Super Bowl (2006) event…

stepheng,
@stepheng@mastodon.online avatar

@adamjcook On one hand, I hear you. On the other hand, every downtown building I ever worked in was about 50 years past its "tear down" date and still being used.

stepheng,
@stepheng@mastodon.online avatar

@adamjcook Fascinating, and I don't doubt it a bit.

Reminds me of the decades long drama to get NYC's Flatiron building to replace the terra cotta cherubs after they literally crumbled down the building and the owners were like... "eh? oh well"

Fun question, do you orient stickers on your laptop so they look right to you before you open it, or so they look right to others when it's open?

stepheng,
@stepheng@mastodon.online avatar

@ehmatthes Did you know? The first Mac laptop with a backlight  logo was the 3rd Generation PowerBook G3 in 1999... and it was initially developed with the  logo oriented toward the operator when closed --thus, being upside-down to everyone else!

Based on feedback, the very next #PowerBook model was revised the #Apple logo leaf-up for everyone else in the room.

stepheng,
@stepheng@mastodon.online avatar

@ehmatthes And don't forget the #Macintosh #PowerBook 1400 that had a removable transparent lid where you could insert different colorful wallpapers... or even print your own!

Has anyone asked 1Password how it intends to comply with EU/UK law, forbidding it from accessing information (anonymised or not) stored on a user's device, for a purpose which is not strictly necessary for the provision of the service, without the user's consent? (Art 5(3) https://www.legislation.gov.uk/eudr/2002/58/article/5)

Is 1Password claiming that this is "strictly necessary", such that it doesn't need consent?

I'm new to Mastodon, but one of my favorite features are the non-curated Local and Federated timeline views.

"AI" generated content should at the very least have a percentage indicator of how much of it is the output of generative ML models.

Preferably referencing which one.

We add country-of-origin et al to physical products, this is the very minimum for ensuring folks have a chance at contextualizing the world.

stepheng,
@stepheng@mastodon.online avatar

@larsmb Even if this was required, I don't think it would be followed in practice.

For example, almost every stock graphics site (Adobe Photos, Getty, iStockPhoto, etc.) require attribution for every use of the photo. Seems 99% of people do not do this, even though they went to the trouble of paying to license the image - they immediately use it against the license terms (usually publicly, for commercial purposes, and in great numbers).

stepheng,
@stepheng@mastodon.online avatar

@larsmb Not sure the cookie banner was a net gain for anyone, but the situation is different. Cookies can be automatically detected or blocked, AI-generated content is already good enough to blend in with human creations in many places. No automatic detection = no easy regulation.

Do you have a website link on your profile or in your posts? Have you made sure it is clickable?

You have to have https:// at the beginning of a web link for it to be clickable on here. Without this, people cannot click on the link.

Without https://
example.com

With https://example.com/example.com>

(BONUS TIP: Advanced users might like to know that Mastodon supports many kinds of link including https://, http://, gemini://, dat://, dweb://, gopher://, ipfs:// and ssb://)
