"Mastodon is great because it gives you tools to curate your own experience without depending on any centralized authority. Also, everyone here needs to follow these 5000 rules I made for what and how they should post."

spacehobo,

@TechConnectify @mattblaze Hugh Laurie recently said something like "America is too big to ever know itself", and I think about that a lot. I think that this place is also too big to know itself, but everyone approaches it like a small in-group where they already understand the complete dynamic.

spacehobo,

@TechConnectify That's pretty much the problem with the US as well, but I left there a couple decades ago so I will have a skewed perspective on it.

spacehobo,

@TechConnectify Yeah, I lived through the Reagan years, and the country threatened to become as divided as it is now.

Love this William Holman Hunt allegorical painting for Turing's 1936 paper in which he invents the universal computer, which runs on a single infinitely long piece of tape. I believe the two figures bowing at his feet are the muses of logic and engineering.

spacehobo,

@ZachWeinersmith Just mock up a cover for On Computable Numbers yourself, using this image. Nobody's stopping you.

This is on the BBC News front page at the moment. And I'm slightly afraid to click it.

spacehobo,

@losttourist The best bit is that that headline will persist because it's a mistake Richards made live in the interview.

If Gulliver’s Travels was written today it would be about the GIFfians and the GIFfians, who fight wars over pronunciation.

Also, the book would be pronounced Julliver’s Travels.

spacehobo,

@bread80 Absolutely respect the gag here, but I am That Guy who reflexively points out that the "JIF" pronunciation was promoted by the authors of the GIF spec because they had a really weak sense of humour.

They did it so they could copy a peanut butter advertising slogan. I'm sorry, but the existence of a Brand is not, in and of itself, a "joke".

If you name something to match a commercial you saw, then point at it shouting "GET IT??? GET IT??!!!", I'm just going to say "No" and wilfully ignore the link.

Also holy cats they used a patented compression algorithm when better unencumbered ones existed. Absolute shame-factory.

It's not like I didn't know full well that it was gonna happen, but boy howdy is saying any nice thing about Large Internet Company on Mastodon quite the exercise.

I'm just another noodle on the internet - what do I know?

But perhaps if any mention of a mainstream anything invites You're Doing it Wrong and you Should Feel Bad About Your Opinions as responses by default... maybe this place isn't so fun.

spacehobo,

@TechConnectify It is Usenet in 1996, and any time anyone brings up operating systems, someone spells it "Micro$oft".

Ah the absurdness of customer support chat.

This is that thing where they keep asking for order numbers and when I say "You're on your company system, why can't you look it up yourself rather than make me do it" then they come back with the order information themselves.

Then the chat drops their customer support person, and the new one who replaces him says "how can I help you" and "do you have an order number?"

#CustomerSupport #BrazilianRiver

spacehobo,

@ottaross CRM systems were supposed to make this sort of friction just vanish, but every single one just doesn't bother to use those features in any sort of ergonomic way, it seems.

spacehobo,

@ottaross But on the phone rep's side, it was supposed to be engineered so that the moment your call is transferred to them, a big screen pops up with the order number, case summary, last steps taken, and options to read more history.

None of this "OK, who are you again? I have no idea why this landed in my lap!" nonsense.

spacehobo,

@ottaross YES EXACTLY!

Remember: if you hear anyone saying anything positive about changing the time every six months, they’re just a shill for Big Clock.

spacehobo,

@mattgrayyes DST makes a lot more sense in the US, where the latitudes mean that you're generally just making sure that "waking up with sunrise" is A Thing year-round.

Up this far north, it's absurd: we're changing the clocks forward only during the period where we won't even notice because there's bloody 22 hours of sunlight anyway.

I may have just succeeded in making Usagi Electric's #Hellorld challenge work for the #pdp12. I'll have to wait to see if I can cajole @tastytronic to try this on actual germanium.

#RetroComputing #VintageComputing

spacehobo,

@tastytronic 33 instructions loaded in starting at 0200. I'm chuffed it worked in vrs's branch of #simh!

https://zork.net/git/SpaceHobo/hellorld-pdp12 ← The Makefile in this repo will download and build all the tools you need to assemble and run this in an emulator!

spacehobo,

@tastytronic And for those who are interested, here's the instructions:

Source is at https://zork.net/git/SpaceHobo/hellorld-pdp12/src/branch/main/helrld.pa

spacehobo,

@tastytronic You should be able to run make test now to build and run this from Vince Slyngstad's branches of both pal and simh:

https://zork.net/git/SpaceHobo/hellorld-pdp12

I figure the helrld.lst file that generates is probably a better aide for keying the thing in, as it keeps the comments and lets you keep track of memory locations to double-check input.

If you're in a progressive group that posts to X, volunteer to start accounts on Masto (and if you can stomach it, BlueSky and/or Threads), manually mirror the posts, and engage as needed. It's a little thing we can do to reduce the left's dependence on fascist fuel.

spacehobo,

@misc Note that bird.makeup is helpful in doing the mirroring.

spacehobo,

@pbump This chart has some scale problems, but it leaves out so many films and doesn't really weight them by audience.

Also really odd choice to pick Beethoven(1992) for St. Bernards rather than Peter Pan (which would have fit the trend of "you saw this as a kid, and got that dog as an adult" that seems to be argued by some of the slopes).
