We adopted a 11yo cat thinking we’d give her a comfy retirement. This was 6 years ago. She’s found a new phase of life: yelling at birds from the couch while cuddling a human.

The library posted a video of them receiving a book that had been loaned out for 70 years. The person’s family returned it after they passed. Now when I procrastinate about returning a book, I think about that video.

Even though I never cooked when I was living in Southeast Asia (you.. really don’t need to), paying attention to food procurement and techniques helped me level up when I started cooking when I left that region.

(Eating street food there is often cheaper than buying ingredients and cooking yourself. In almost all SEA cities)

There’s a lot of stuff I felt I just ‘knew’ because I was around people who dealt with food all the time

Sometimes I read racist people talk about ‘how can Chinatown veggies be so cheap, must be bad’ as though Chinese aunties won’t also throw carrots and cabbages at you for going to a supermarket and getting inferior product that was much more expensive than Chinatown

Note my idea of breakfast may be quite different!

  • pho at pho2000
  • banh mi or bun bo hue or chao long at Mong Thu
  • kwayteow radna at Lapat’s
  • relleno negro stew at Los Yucatecos
  • bbq pork shoulder and rice, or khao soi, at Sai Jai Thai
  • the brunch at Lapisara (try the laab burger)
  • the $9 Latin fried rice and roast chicken at Cantoo
  • salted egg yolk croissant, or banana bread, at sweet glory
  • sandwiches at Salty’s

(Yes, I know about Saigon sandwich. I’m explicitly not listing them for a reason: I don’t like that style of banh mi, but it’s the best banh mi for everyone else and you should def still go there)

After 6 years of wondering ‘why am I much more depressed in SF than in Singapore / Malaysia / Indonesia’, I’ve done everything, seen everyone, done all the therapies, but I’ve just realized that the difference is ‘I don’t eat noodles for breakfast every morning’ in only one of those places.

So, I rectified that today and it’s looking like my theory has legs. And noodles. And happiness.

Growing up in Southeast Asia means that on the hottest day of the year, all I want to eat is the hottest (temp) food I can get. So, pho for breakfast it is.

In general all breakfast foods should have reached boiling temp for me, and be eaten with as much chillies as possible; never ever sweet

Something I love telling people is that the Mandarin euphemism for ‘being horny’ is ‘I ate your tofu / I want to eat your tofu / they ate my tofu’. I feel like we should popularize that in pop culture. Like, you hear that in TV shows (mainly Taiwanese but also sometimes mainland Chinese)

This is the first tempeh I’ve had on the west coast that tastes like tempeh to me. I feel like when most people here say they don’t like tempeh they really mean they haven’t had decent tempeh.

This brand is from Eugene, OR and available at Rainbow Grocery in SF and other retailers

Indonesians should look away from the price to avoid excessive shock to the system

I have a really good friend who is Syrian. I love the Syrian sense of humor.

I was telling him about how I feel as though in a world of super specialized people at this stage in my career, I feel like an oddball. He says, ‘you’re like fusion food. But you have to have a clear and easily understood story. Who you are, what you’re selling. Otherwise, you will be confusion food.’

Because of the Vietnam War, there are some Vietnamese beverages that replace milk with egg yolks.

Like this egg yolk soda. It’s a bit like a ‘soda gembira’ in Indonesia, but with egg yolks instead of rose syrup and milk. There’s also egg coffee.

I get my egg yolk soda from Pho2000 in the TL, and Vietnamese egg coffee at Lacàphê in South Bay.
