Listening to a podcast with Serj Tankian and people getting pissed that he's political. I guess those folks never listened to prison song or the entire albums, just the hits?

Contributor opens PR over a year ago, gets immediate feedback requesting changes.

One year later, same contributor: "I've just made these changes please merge and release, this is URGENT!"

Well, friend, it can't be that urgent if you waited something like a year to get to it

sigmavirus24, to random
@sigmavirus24@hachyderm.io avatar

Every time someone creates a "New release?" (and especially when there is at least one other open) I'm tempted to reply along the lines of "I was just about to do that, but now I think it should wait another year or five" just to fuck with people

Why are researchers trying to enshittify commit messages with LLMs when we already have reached peak enshittification with conventional commits?

sigmavirus24,
@sigmavirus24@hachyderm.io avatar

@ghickman don't get me started on people who use emojis instead of words with conventional commits

bug(🪲): I think context of a commit belongs in a changelog and my crappy messages will help users know what actually happened

sigmavirus24,

@bitprophet @ghickman I've seen projects where it's every damned issue and commit message

@glyph cpython has they're own that's not mpdec

Post-vaxx doldrums. Glad I was smart enough to schedule a Friday afternoon jab. 😪

Relatedly, I've been trying a pack of 3M Aura N95 masks, capsule review:

  • Nose band is indeed top notch, comfy, seems to go between flat and nose-shaped w/o losing much integrity.
  • Rubber headbands are exactly as fragile as I was worrying; my first mask broke at an inopportune time after only like 6 uses. Chalk one up for "always keep spares in glovebox”.

May try again w/ the other band type? (9210+, vs 9205+)

@sigmavirus24@hachyderm.io avatar

@mpirnat @bitprophet same here. I'm in a constant battle of something that covers well without moving in an inopportune way and not so big that the seal isn't good enough. Last year it got to the point that to get a good deal I started shaving for the first time since 2008. I still don't recognize myself when I have to shave to get a good seal

It never fails to amaze me how widespread #Matrix is, while it flies under the radar.

It's not only for #FOSS projects, though its users do include Mozilla, Eclipse, Ubuntu, GNOME, Fedora, KDE, openSUSE, FSFE, W3C, et al!

There's massive adoption in the European public sector, where there's an appreciation of open source, open standards, and digital sovereignty – most notably in Germany.

@element put together a great landing page showcasing Matrix adoption in Germany: https://element.io/matrix-in-germany

@josh are any of the clients complete/way to set up? I feel like each time I've looked all the clients are half baked and weechat integration looked like a project unto itself worthy of a weekend

I wrote this for myself, and shared with a few trusted folks who I knew would be interested, but it has made its way outside of those circles and getting positive feedback, so may as well share it here. https://blog.ian.stapletoncordas.co/2024/02/a-retrospective-on-requests

@hyc Hi! Funny bumping into you. I work in PKI and a partner deploying OpenLDAP pointed out the docs around configuring TLS for OpenLDAP with some surprising recommendations/requirements that I can't tell if they're poorly documented or artifacts of something else. Do you know who I should talk to? I assume I should just open a bug but not sure how that's received by y'all. Thanks in advance

@glyph @chrisjrn @Quinnypig I was pairing with someone on some golang stuff involving durations and they became very frustrated that there were no Day, Month, or Year durations (base unit for a duration is nanoseconds iirc). I had to ask them "which month?", "does the day have a leap second?" And they were still grousing about it as if it should just work lol

I swear to fucking god, one of these days I will snap and start my own #InternetRadio station, "novocals.fm”, where it's all #ElectronicMusic WITHOUT ANY GODDAMN HUMAN #VOICES IN IT 🤬

Some of us have faulty speech-processing centers, and just want the #music without the incredibly distracting tongue-flap noises 😩

(in the meantime, I may have to try and resurrect my brain.fm habit 🤔)

I realized I didn't mention it anywhere, so here we go - I've been working on F/OSS stuff for a while. Some of those projects I started when I didn't know very much about anything regarding good software development. So, I wrote down my retrospective thoughts on github3.py on my blog: https://blog.ian.stapletoncordas.co/2024/01/a-retrospective-on-github3py I may do other projects I've worked on too in the future. It's a long one, so I don't expect folks to read it all, but it was helpful for me to write it and get it out of my head

Still love that GitHub has changed how they interpret scraping of contact information from their user profiles. Even when I show that this is an email address only associated with that profile, they say "There's no evidence this is from scraping your profile and even so it doesn't violate the terms of service". Love to be spammed for random user research, misguided PhD research, and now campaign contributions. 🙄

A friend suggested lending me Erin Morgenstern's fantasy novel "The Night Circus".

Only after I borrowed it did I realize that I have been confusing "The Night Circus" with Erik Larson's nonfiction book "In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin", I think because:

Larson also wrote "The Devil in the White City" about the 1893 World's Fair

They both have black covers

My brain puts "Berlin" and "circuses" close to each other

sigmavirus24,
@sigmavirus24@hachyderm.io avatar

@brainwane one of my feminist literary podcasts - Material Girls - just published an episode about Night Circus that I started listening to this morning https://www.ohwitchplease.ca/all-episodes/materialgirls-thenightcircusandreadingecosystems one of the things they talk about is Zeitgeist/Why this? why now? And I'm a bit entertained that you mentioned this within hours of me starting that section of the episode

So is #AdventOfCode actually any good? I have a pile of anecdata asserting that historically, it turns into completely impenetrable wanker bullshit by day ~10 out of 24.

I /might/ actually have the bandwidth for it this year, but I would much rather put the time into personal projects or OSS if I'm gonna feel compelled to give up on an advent halfway through.

#programming #coding #advent
