It rained on me on the way to the coffee shop this morning. Not real rain. It rarely does that in #portland.

I grew up in the Midwest where storms are dangerous. Then I moved to SF where there's just one long season.

When I moved to #pdx I started saying "it's nice to have seasons again" and it was. It gives texture to time so that you can feel it's passing.

Today as I listened to the rain hitting the cherry blossoms and magnolia petals I felt time's passing.

Yesterday it was sunny. The light blows out the colors of the flowers, and dries up the daffodils, so I dislike it now.

The green of the budding leaves is emerging from the fresh blooms, like the wings of cicadas that just left their shells.

I'd like to slow time down, let the flowers stay on the trees for months. Delay the inevitable baking heat of the summer.

As much as I demonize the automobile for what it’s done to our cities, I still appreciate the engineering behind them.

Even something so simple as a differential is such an elegant solution to the problem of different radii between left and right wheel paths during a turn.

I'm not rich, but I don't spend more than I earn in interest on my Bitcoin, so I'm having a hard time motivating myself to look for a job. I've been a web developer for about 25 years, and though I like the work, I can't stand the people. They are ego-maniacal, bad at communication, and humorless in general. There are exceptions, but they get cowed by louder more aggressive ones. "So contract" I hear you say; but here's the weird thing; I actually like working with people.

People keep me motivated, people are the reason I program; solving people's problems. Talking to people helps me solve problems, let's me know I'm doing the right things. If there were no people, I would not program. I don't do it for the fun of seeing pixels on a screen, I do it to give other people powers they need.

I just don't like the kind of people who are attracted to programming, the pedants, the 10xers, the vape dragging posers, and the petty napoleons.

I'll never finish a side project. I lose interest once the novel problems have been solved. I'm not great at marketing, so I can't muster a crowd to please at will. With nobody asking for some software I'll eventually get bored and move on.

I like the kinds of problems that take teams of people collaborating to solve. I like dividing work amongst a team, and supporting my coworkers with code review and test writing.

I just don't like the kind of people that STEM attracts.

I've been watching a lot of videos on YouTube of people making food at IHOP. I'd go insane doing that amount of repetitive manual labor, I'm soft, I know that. But I envy their comraderie. They tease each other, and they help each other, they pick up each other's slack and they let each other do their own work without nitpicking. They are humble, they are empathetic, they communicate CONSTANTLY!

Deep in my soul, I NEED a problem to build software to solve for. There's a part of my brain that's sitting there with nothing to noodle, and it's atrophying. But all those problems are swarmed by insufferable brats who think they are very smart and don't need to interact with other humans to do their jobs.

My partner, who does counselling, calls this a "limiting belief". That's not wrong, I know that I'm generalizing, and generalizing about people always means you're wrong about someone. But what can you do when you've been doing the same thing for 25 years and keep getting the same results?

Maybe there's a team of humble, unpretentious engineers who are secure in their self-worth and working on a nice hard and useful problem, and they'd love just one more contributor with empathy and soft-skills to join them.

Maybe I'll never meet them....

But sitting around arguing with fucks on social media isn't gonna help me find that. If anything I'm becoming more like them the more I do.

So I try to think of some silly project to build, something to keep my skills sharp. I know the web, and there's always stuff to learn. #WebComponents and #ESModules have arrived and there's so much potential to create building blocks from those that other people can use.

#WebGPU, #WebBluetooth, and #WebSockets open up so many possibilities too. I see so many hardware makers shipping web-based configuration tools these days and I'm HERE FOR IT! There's almost nothing the web can't do these days.

I'm also intensely interested in distributed programming with blockchains like #InternetComputerProtocol and #Solana, and distributed hosting with things like #IPFS and #Filecoin.
