Remember Porto Alegre, that city in Brazil which got massively underwater due to heavy rains? Turns out climate change wasn’t the only cause of the scale of the disaster.

Some years ago the people in charge of the city, free market lovers, extinguished the department that dealt with prevention of floods (a recurring event in the region even if rarely at this scale). Small government at work.

The problem with is often all the things that DON’T happen because of it.

I guarantee that if American companies were losing billions as a consequence of the current massacre in it would stop overnight.

But it turns out that while “unfortunately the children are on fire” capital keeps expanding. So nothing happens because under capitalism nothing is necessary if it is not expanding capital.

One thing @phanpy is missing which I absolutely use in @MonaApp is to hide from the main timeline all the people who are in lists. To me “main” means “all the rest”.

Good news: @phanpy is really great on iPhone.

Bad news: I had just deleted all Mastodon apps to avoid using it when I am not at the computer. And now I have a link that’s just a good / addictive as a native client.

Posted from my phone. From bed. 🙄

IMO you shouldn't be allowed to call yourself a "Product Manager" unless you've actually built a new product from the ground up before & gotten it to market.

@alexsereno I don’t know. I am (more or less) managing my depression even though I believe I inherited it. Am I not a real a manager then ?

So bought a used ThinkPad T61 (core 2 duo 4GB ram) for about 111$ + 30$ for a new battery *

I know I could get a faster CPU for that price but that’s not the point. I am a pervert and want a laptop that is slow (but of quality) to fiddle with lightweight operating systems.

  • yes you can get everything at half that price or in trashcan if you’re not in Brazil, I know.
santiago,
@santiago@masto.lema.org avatar

@stevelord It’s a Lenovo . This is a 2006 machine I think. Did IBM build the same T61 ? I don’t remember when and how the transition happened. At that time I was getting fully into OSX.

santiago,
@santiago@masto.lema.org avatar

@stevelord so Lenovo purchased Thinkpad in 2004 already but didn’t use their own brand until 2006 which is when the T61 was released.
https://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/10/technology/lenovo-makes-break-with-the-ibm-brand.html

santiago,
@santiago@masto.lema.org avatar

@lymenzies thanks I had a look at the forums before getting it and there are indeed reports most things are supported with the exact T61.

I am sure it’ll be fun to use it on a sofa. I have a dedicated Haiku i3 UMPC at my desktop but having it in a laptop will surely be better for real immersion / relaxing.

santiago,

@Lazarou Which is a fact. We can’t stop it. Only the US government has the leverage to actually stop it. But if it didn’t happen for the first 30k deaths why would it happen now ? Weapons sales are high, lobbyists are happy. Everything is just fine. For some.

OK the way @phanpy displays boosts is really great. Less tedious than having to enable / disable them. You see there’s a bunch and can scroll laterally.

santiago,
@santiago@masto.lema.org avatar

@tayledras I wonder what you run on them ? just plain DOS ? I see the lightweight Linux I have been trying lately can work in a few hundred megs but I don’t know the specs of those thinkpads.

santiago,
@santiago@masto.lema.org avatar

@tayledras You should try Loc-OS on them. I used the XFCE version on a 2010 Mac mini and it works beautifully. KDE build had lock ups but I suppose it’s a hardware issue so I’ll try on my T61. 120 GB should be enough to dual boot LocOS and Haiku with only dev tools.

These are not only very low on memory usage (not an issue for yours) but they also have the fastest option for each component (it’s Debian based so you can install pretty much anything that’s missing).

https://loc-os.com/

santiago,
@santiago@masto.lema.org avatar

@tayledras oh thanks for the tip ! I have been using Apple laptops for so long I forgot we used to be able to replace memory sticks (not even joking). Though I will absolutely try with 4GB first as I actually want a low end machine for testing.

¿Cuánto has tardado? Seguramente, más o menos al mitad que con la «multitarea».

I tried @phanpy (mastodon web client) as someone (forgot who 😅) recommended.

The catch-up feature is nice indeed. However in my dreams instead of having 1hour to 12 hour ranges it would have each hour separated in one item I could mark as done. So I can check 22h and then maybe later 21h . Progressively, by chunks without losing track of what I saw.. that or by chunk of 100 posts, grouped by author.
