This is daft.
Even in the universe people age and die.
There is no way in hell any of these four would not restart their life as kids. Especially Guinan, winding back so many years. A few years “discomfort” of being a kid for a whole new life - no brainer.
And no way they would not then have a whole team research that “transporter accident”.

@revk@toot.me.uk avatar

@mansr Sorry, StarTrek, TNG, S6E7, a fun episode, but like a few others totally radical in the context of the whole reality.

Basically 4 people become young, with no reason not to expect them to grow as normal, but with all their current memory and experience, all due to a transporter accident.

They were restored to normal age. Why?

revk,
@revk@toot.me.uk avatar

@mansr The option was to their previous (much older) age. That would be daft for all of them.

WTF, was that some serious thunder in Abergavenny just then?

Wow, looks like it was!

(Catching rain on CCTV is not easy, unless, well, it is "serious" rain)

Update: I am checking if the new lawn needs the sprinklers turning on or not...

One way to get exercise...

Fuck up some code running on your home alarm system.

  • Crawling in the loft.
  • Reaching up to smoke alarms, CO alarms, PIRs.
  • Unscrewing panels from doors to get to locks.

I managed to only zap half of my devices this time, but still, knackering.

Each had to be retrieved (and some are in light switches and some in the loft, and so on), plugged in to debug/test to reflash, and upgraded, and put back.

I do this so I don't have to do at the office, 2 hours away!

revk,
@revk@toot.me.uk avatar

Oh, and what did I fuck up?

I changed from ESP IDF 5.1.1 to 5.2.1

It had an assert in UART code (easy one). Meant my buffer lengths were magically no longer valid.

And they have seriously changed something subtle in mesh code, maybe making it work properly, not sure. As usual, documented settings fail, so trial and error.

My various fixes and tests were a lot of work, and one, just one, broke things enough I could not OTA them. Bugger.

revk,
@revk@toot.me.uk avatar

@penguin42 Well, yes, I started with that, and, well, that was working...

I have extra devices on the bench for the purpose.

I do try to avoid the hard work if possible, honest.

The real danger is when I mess up the update means, which only breaks after the update, and then update the office... One reason I do an update twice on my own system.

Do flearthers that live in Australia think it odd that people in the Northern hemisphere don’t fall off the ”top” of the world?

revk, to StarTrek
@revk@toot.me.uk avatar

To be honest, there is no way a starship captain directs the ship using "degrees mark degrees". It would not be precise enough, for a start, and no way that it would make sense.

It would be like steering a car by constantly having to say "set course 243 degrees" and the like, rather than simply setting the sat nav.

It is one of the strangest features of #StarTrek I have tolerated.

@revk Got the SIP2SIM thing and inbound and outbound seem to be working.

Outbound SMSs seem to work, but inbound messages result in a call from BT's SMS delivery system.

Did I miss a setting?

revk,
@revk@toot.me.uk avatar

@mart_brooks Ah, landline number, yes?

Sadly, yes.

But good news, we may have that sorted soon. SMS to landlines has been a seriously complicated issue for a very long time, but we are told may soon be possible.

And, good news (email me the ICCID to trial and I'll check) it should be possible to make iMessage work (if an iPhone).

revk,

@mart_brooks no idea on time scales, but the fact it may be possible at all is encouraging.

Ok just saw this...

Pythagorus theorem but with regular hexagons not squares.

Took me a second, but obviously it is true, as area of a regular hexagon is just a constant times the square.

Cool though.

"The area of the equilateral triangle* of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the areas of the equilateral triangle* of the other two sides. *:any regular polygon"

revk,
@revk@toot.me.uk avatar

@Crell I mean one of my first jobs was fix something where the only code was a literal assembly printout, somewhat faded, and a file for the binary that got burned to an EPROM. I had to patch in a jump to a separate bit of code I put in a spare bit of space and then back in to the right place.

LOL, no, not remotely comparing to what NASA did. It was a tote machine, and I could change the EPROM if I screwed up.

NASA are awesome

Fun bit of “throw the new guy in the deep end” though.

So, is it something like this?

Dear ICO,

I understand that under new rules, as the operator of a social media platform, I have to advise you how I check the age of my user. I have used two methods.

  1. Looking in the mirror and seeing I look well over 18.

  2. For around 55 years I have meticulously counted the number of birthdays I have had, that number being 60, which is more than 18. I did rely on my parents to confirm the first few.

I trust you find this meets the requirements.

Lots of news reports about the online safety bill today, with attention on the part of children requiring age verification to use social media apps.

The reporting is somewhat misleading - for this to work everyone will be required to submit to age verification.

So why aren’t the headlines “ID docs required for social media apps”?

revk,
@revk@toot.me.uk avatar

@steve well, except for mastodon/fediverse?
