In Zionist mythology, Prime Minister Golda Meir was the embodiment of progressive Zionism. She was motherly—strong but deeply caring and loving.

It’s quite telling that she engaged in the same ethnic cleansing as everybody else…

Stumbled on this quote by Richie Reseda in an old Jewish Currents issue that perfectly captures how I think of #abolition ❤️

“I feel like a big part of abolition is divesting from this idea—I don't know where we got it, maybe from Jewish or Christian religious teachings—that there are moral people and immoral people and only the moral people deserve to get their needs met. And everybody else just deserves to face violence—that we need violence to protect the moral people from the immoral people”

Excellent article from @restofworld showing the sad reality of languages of the web: https://restofworld.org/2023/internet-most-used-languages/

Less than 5% of the world population speak English as their primary language, yet 55% of the web has English as the primary language.

Great report on the role of Microsoft, Cisco, IBM and Dell in the surveillance and oppression of Palestinians: https://www.whoprofits.org/dynamic-report/the-role-of-big-tech-in-the-israeli-occupation-economy/

“the work of these companies bolsters the capacity of an already highly technological and data-oriented Israeli occupation economy and its capacity to dispossess, repress, control and subject Palestinians on both sides of the Green Line to pervasive surveillance.”

I’m still a little confused about on aspect of the #fediverse: are we supposed to create a new account for each new platform? Isn’t one of the points of #PeerTube, #PixelFed, Mastodon and others to talk to each other seamlessly that we don’t have to have a separate account for each?

Spam (like the torrent of cryptoscamspam lots of people got this morning) has been very rare for me here (and dealt with quickly), but I've noticed that almost all of the spam I've gotten has been via Mastodon's DM feature.

I really wish there was a way to turn DMs off or at least restrict them to people I follow. Control over incoming DMs was a thing Twitter did better than here.

@mattblaze end-to-end encrypted DMs are on the roadmap so the decoupling is on its way

There's a lot of great explanation sites about the fediverse and its various communities, and I wanted to take a stab at this myself.

https://jointhefediverse.net

The site (very much work in progress) is aimed at a more casual audience. Let me know what you think!

A must read by @parismarx

It reminds me of this quote by Max Weber: “The fortunate man is seldom satisfied with the fact of being fortunate. Beyond this, he needs to know that he has a right to his good fortune. He wants to be convinced that he 'deserves' it, and above all, that he deserves it in comparison with others... Good fortune thus wants to be 'legitimate' fortune.”

Holy moly, this is very encouraging: not just because BlueSky seems to be going in a good direction on algorithms and content moderation, but between the Fediverse and BlueSky, it looks like we’re going to get two networks, with different protocols, features, and policies; but both with decentralization, consent, and safety at the core.

Great piece by @mmasnick

@mmasnick @CaliGal I’m less worried about his links to Twitter/Musk than whether he’s learnt the lessons from this fiasco. As far as I know, he hasn’t taken any accountability for cashing out on the back of everyone who loved Twitter and depended on it…

@mmasnick @CaliGal My bad, yes it looks like he didn't make money off the sale. Still, has he taken accountability for the whole debacle? All I've heard him say is that he regrets making Twitter into a company rather than a protocol. Nothing on the harm to people who relied on Twitter for critical matters and his role in it. Did I miss something?

Is it ethical to use ChatGPT?

I'm not talking about the ethical issues with making it, but with using it. Can we think of the data used to train ChatGPT as stolen, by extension making writing with ChatGPT an act of theft? Should we avoid it, or even boycott?

Please boost, would love to hear a lot of opinions on the topic!

One of the many small things I appreciate about @elk is that when you follow someone who follows you back, it says explicitly that we are "mutuals".

It's great UX (no need to look for the "John follows you" badge) but also it institutionalizes the concept of mutuality, reciprocity. Love it!

Chag sameah to all Jews out here!

As we celebrate our ancestors' liberation from Egypt, a great time to remember that no one is free until we are all free. No liberation without Palestinian liberation.

One of the questions I have about the #Fediverse is this: the Fediverse can be, at once, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and much more of course. Which is incredible.

But do we envision apps/portals to access all of these at once? Or will we need as many accounts as there are apps (one for Mastodon, one for PixelFed, etc), and access them separately?

With @mullvadnet releasing the Mullvad browser, I tested all of the browsers I have installed with @eff's Cover Your Tracks tool.

Top left: Mullvad browser
Top right: Firefox (I disabled uBlockOrigin)
Bottom left: Brave
Bottom center: Edge
Bottom right: Chrome

raph,
@raph@social.coop avatar

@mullvadnet @eff Conclusions:

  1. Brave: not great despite its branding as a privacy browser; strong against fingerprinting though
  2. Chrome and Edge: suck, as expected
  3. Firefox: strong but doesn't protect against fingerprinting, as expected
  4. Mullvad:
  • unique fingerprint but this is because the EFF tool compares the current fingerprint w/ its database of fingerprints, & Mullvad browser is too new to have its fingerprint in the database
  • "Partial protection" for ads & trackers is concerning
