@r343l@freeradical.zone

I live in Seattle WA (USA) with my family and work in tech. I'm also disabled (mostly deaf & blind on one side). I ride the bus, walk or bike most of the time and I care a lot about our transportation system working for everyone. I spend a lot of my not-work time on local advocacy, family stuff, pottery and our unitarian universalist church. Pronouns: They/Them

Note: I have multiple accounts and not posting all topics from one account. This one is my more general account.

@charliejane @annaleen Thanks for mentioning The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy on your podcast. We’re only 4 episodes in but so delightful.

Health insurance being able to dictate how you get certain drugs using their pharmacy is one of the most fucked up things about our system in the US. It seems like nothing but a scheme for corruption.

The Danny Westneat of economics bloggers thinks he’s great despite the absurd autocratic tech fascist cosplay. https://newrepublic.com/article/180487/balaji-srinivasan-network-state-plutocrat

This article is just wild and yet another reminder that the top folks “in tech” are often not wise, thoughtful or caring.

Heck yeah high school and college students in #Washington and the #Seattle area! Walkouts and protests occurring at high schools and colleges to call for an end to Israeli violence in Gaza! https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/student-walkout-updates-as-wa-students-protest-israel-hamas-war/ #EndGenocideInGaza

I am reading The Spice Must Flow by Ryan Britt which is a kind of loving fan history of the Dune books and media. In it, I learn Herbert got $2,295 for the serialized first part of the first book published in Analog. That’s like $22k today and wow.

So many fun details about the two attempts to make the book into a film before Lynch’s — and before Star Wars. I only knew about Jodorowsky’s which sounds like it would have gone poorly even if visually amazing.

For the first time in a while #pottery went okay and I (a) was able to go physically and emotionally and (b) am not leaving horribly disappointed at what I did. Also I threw some weird (hopefully gaiwan lid) things off the hump which was my first time trying to throw anything off the hump (they look like little floppy plates because I can’t cut level).

I have mostly converted a large monorepo of typescript packages that build up a handful of servers from targeting CommonJS (CJS) to ESM. My brain is now (more) broken.

I begin to believe that a future malicious AI has been time traveling to influence the development of Javascript to waste as much human effort and physical resources as possible.

Partner: “I’m sure it can run in Docker like everything else.”
Me: “do you even know what Docker is?”

(Turns out partner has a roughly correct idea of what it is presumably from my rants and all y’all tech weirdos tooting about it.)

Me: OMG why is escape key just making a noise and not putting me into command mode?! Is my escape key broken?!

<turns fn key on and off a few times for good measure in case that is related, start searching for mac escape key problems.>

Me: $Partner!! My escape key is broken!! (They are the household hardware support person even though I'm the programmer.)

<They come over. I realize I'm in Notes app not VIM. Notes app doesn't have command vs insert mode.>

I’ve been playing The Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past via Switch Online using the Switch SNES controller projected onto a big screen at home and it is amazing. Quite comforting to this genx/elder-millennial who hunted down an SNES as an adult just to play it (family couldn’t afford one when it came out) but which I foolishly sold 4 moves ago.

Also I’ve caused both me and my partner to earworm on the perfect versions of certain Zelda game songs. Do-do-doo!

Thinking a lot about the post @jacob wrote about celebrating when folks get paid to do open source. Why was Redis VC-backed anyway? Why did the company’s leaders feel the need to change license terms? Why doesn’t that kind of choice seem to work? Why is it that major tech companies depend on so much free software? Why are there so few sustainable examples of open source that don’t involve huge companies, jerky licenses or maintainers being paid a pittance?

A wild thing. I just finished listening to the second part of a two parter of Behind the Bastards about a person who allegedly created the hacking-for-hire industry in India. The episodes were of course about a lot more including what kinds of people, companies and countries (allegedly) hire hacking businesses and some of what they do with it. I saw a link go by about journalists critical of something being targeted which reminded me I wanted to share the episodes. They are gone.

Thanks @jacob for this piece on how important it is that we just celebrate anyone making any kind of living even partly on work they do for open source / free software. https://jacobian.org/2024/feb/16/paying-maintainers-is-good/

If you’re a resident of the United States, have you called or wrote the members of thr House and Senate that represent you to demand they push for the ending of the United States support of Israel committing genocide in Gaza? You can tell them as often as you have the stomach for it. #EndGenocideInGaza #FreePalestine

I’ve done public records requests in Washington state (multple agencies at different levels of government) and it is a huge pain regardless. But, wow, largely better than most Aaron Gordon experienced while trying to gather data for the Kia / Hyundai theft story. https://www.vice.com/en/article/5d9qna/i-filed-136-public-records-requests-with-police-and-learned-why-our-system-is-broken
